H501s An absolutely brilliant quadcopter. Money well spent. Easy to fly, reliable, got the distance, superb camera picture quality which puts the h109s to shame. The only negative is no gimbal for the video otherwise it would be 100% perfect.

What is the true range on this bird?

Range depends on angle of the antenna determines the distance it will transmit. Doing the 'modifications' i.e adding external antennae increases the range to about 1000m by which time the H501s is well out of sight. Altitude helps keep it in radio range.The 14db video antenna increases the video reception tremendously.

Hi Hubsan, I have been flying the H501S for approx 4-5 years with no problem. Recently while flying the drone went completely out of control and crashed into a soft hedge. No apparent damage. To ensure this episode was not repeated i reset all controls. However, the unit is now in mode 1. Your instruction manual states go to main menu and select "set reverse", this does not appear on my Menu. This is my 2nd H501S and is perfect in every way. However, your after sales service leaves a lot to be desired. No response to my memo or or communications from your tech support. Advise from your tech support would be appreciated.

According to the videos on youtube, when follow me mode is entered the drone turns itself to face the controller.

FYI, when outside and connected to the minimum sats, the drone will follow the remote. If you turn off the remote the drone will fly back to it's launching site. The drone follows the remote, NOT you. Launch the drone at a safe height, activate follow me and give the remote to your grandchild, watch him/her run laughing as it chases them. Just be sure there's nothing the drone can hit!

Dear Hubsan. The "fall drop" feature is mentioned but not really described. Does it just "kill" the motors. If so why are there 4 diffrent ways to do this? Can the motors be turned on again before cashing to the ground?

First thing: Antennas should be put on the transmitter before you ever power on the transmitter. Failure to do so will damage the transmitter. They should know better if this is an Official video.

I was introduced to the Hubsan 107h quads about a year ago and would be interested in purchasing this item but after repeated requests on finding a local seller or on line sales I am really becoming frustrated on the lack of communications from Hubsan in regards to this matter. I have sent repeated requests for information on Hubsan products and continue to have zero corespondance. With all the competition out there for quadcopters you would think that these companies would be jumping all over the place when people show interest in their products but so far not this company!

I owned one, and now I just knew it has 4 ways to turn off the motors during flight, it is extremely stupid design. The chance you hit an airplane is much less than the chance you accidentally fall into one of 4 motors-off combinations and let the drone fall drop and hit people below. Furthermore, if it hit a bird, it is more dangerous or turn off the motors and let it fall drop is more dangerous?

I have the problem with this quad. today I set the sensitivity to fly it in normal mode and crashed because the quad was somehow behaving strangely uncontrolled then hit the wall, landed upside down, I can't stop the motors and the propeller stuck to the wall for nearly 2 minutes. I try everything to stop the motors, but won't stop. so I decide to switch off and on the transmitter quickly, finally I can stop the motors with two broken propellers and strange noise of two motors. It's terrible, since it really dangerous if hit someone! FYI mine was on stock firmware 1.1.9

If you want to fly with GPS, the switch must be up and the aircraft needs to be outside.

Good intro video, thank you, but like the user manual, it does not explain everything a user needs to know to use the drone. For example, I have mine for two weeks, it flies well but will not record video or photos. When I press the 'ENTER' button (video) on the advanced Tx, a message appears "Put throttle down". Not very helpful, nor is the manual. I have tried two new micro SD cards which work in cameras fine, but the H501s will not record on them. If this drone requires Class 10 or other specific memory card specs, then that should be in the manual. Any ideas? Thank you.

I had 2 of these but lost both in the swamps behind my house in florida. This is a fantastic drone in every way. I plan on getting another. I think hubsan should but a small audio beep finder on these. My next one will be spray painted flouro orange, so if it goes down it can be found easier. @@MrCorydog i tried . My last numbers equated to 475 yards away. I paced off of that distance with my cell phone gps and then tried walking left for 1/4 mile and i Then right a 1/4 mile. Its insane thick swamp. The gps said the elevation at 17 meters, thats about 58 ft high in the trees. Looked for it for a few times. Look on my channel i have a few drone videos youll see what i was up against. Next one i get will put a small light flasher/pinger on it.Like trying to find a Needle in a entire country. That's common when your flying. If you're worried your video or pic recording will experience the same issue don't. It's just a lag from the remote and drone. All recording is done in the drone via on board micro SD card.

How does the gps hold get activated? Is it as easy as turning the gps on?

Yes. You should always arm your motors with GPS activated. That sets the drone's return point should you activate or need it. Just be sure not to arm your motors until you have signal from 6 sats for both your quad and the remote. Otherwise the function may not work.

Hi, I have seen the most of your videos , read the comments, but stil having problems :) I had some nice flying last week, but suddenly the display on the transmitter shows R 3, P 1 and the drone drifts. I have tried to recalibrate the compass but no luck. I updated the software to RX V1.2.17, FC V1.5.25, Transmitter V4.2.8, LCD V1.3.2, but stil having the same trouble. Can you please advice? You want to place the drone on a flat surface when you first power on, the drone will check its gyro sensor and reset the P and R to 0.

Is there any hope? I thought I had set up my drone by turning it horizontally and vertically but when I tried to take off the left side tried to lift and go right. Eventually it shot off to the right under full power jammed itself between the concrete path and wall and proceed to flail the rotors to pieces. I had no control and it eventually stopped on its own. I took the rotors off and tried again but now there is smoke coming out of the vents in one of the arms, I pulled the plug immediately.

Sounds like the blade rotation was wrong. There are two different pitches to the blades.

Pay attention to 7:49 of this video where the "fall drop" feature is described (which is NOT documented the manual). During flight, any of the 4 combinations of left and right stick to lower left or lower right will cause a "fall drop." So what exactly is a "fall drop"? Good question. Seems like it just shuts down the motors. And from the video it's been implemented as an emergency way to avoid birds or planes. REALLY HUBSAN? Adding a function to shut down the motors using the main flight control sticks DURING FLIGHT is just plain stupid and bad design. And providing not just one way, but 4 different ways it can be engaged makes it STUPID X4! If you're going to implement it, make it invokeable only in a specific manner that is not likely to be casually or inadvertently activated. Like simultaneously pressing down on the elevator and throttle trim buttons. I can easily see how most of the reports of motor shutdown during flight and subsequent crash described in this thread can be attributed to this undocumented feature. This really needs to be taken out in future firmware releases.

Guys, sort of a dumb comment! And I’m not being mean either. It’s called disarming the motors. Every “real” quad works that way. Toys usually don’t. The down left and down right is used because no one is simultaneously shutting the motors down and yaw left while pitching backward rolling right at full stick extension. Think about that and try to figure some maneuver where that would be your desired action. This quad is aimed at the noob, so they can get it up in the air easily. Use the nice camera and record. The follow me mode, even my granddaughter loves that. I bought this for her. She can’t accidentally flight it out range and lose it. With headless mode she doesn’t need to learn orientation which is very hard for beginners. With gps, if you lose control you can just let go of the sticks and it stays right there for you. And if you want to try a really fly, you can do it in steps by using altitude hold which is faster and more responsive and you still don’t have to completely control the quad because it won’t lose altitude when you turn or bank. And finally, you can actually fly this like a real quad, set it to manual mode, and it disables altitude hold, then you put it in altitude mode with the switch which then disables gps and it’s then a real quad. You have to make it hover, go, stay, fly. It will not do anything on its own. So this quad can take you from start to finish, even acrobatics in manual mode. This thing works fabulously as a toy, and works well as a real quad. These same features are on some very high end quads to help the pilots take video. Headless mode and holds so that the pilot can swivel the quad to keep a camera on a subject. And the high end ones can all go into a acro mode (hubsan manual mode). This is amazing at this price point.

Agreed. I've always flown my drones in headless mode because truthfully, I never cared for the cameras before so I couldn't care less about the front of the copter, just that the drone moves left when I push left and right when I push right, regardless of the drone's direction. So long as you keep it in front of you no problem. THAT'S great for beginners. Then with a flip of a switch you can turn off GPS mode and this thing FLIES. MUCH faster than your Syma toys. With all the features this baby has, GPS, Alt hold, manual mode, RTH, 1080p camera, follow me, built in screen (Not very many quad remotes offer that), ect, this is a great deal at $200, my price a month ago, July 2018. Plus, mine came with lipo battery for the remote AND the screen shade. I bought the antenna mods so no drop in FPV at all and I'm seeing vids of these going 1500m out and farther. This really is a great starter as well as intermediate drone for the $.

Must have been a strong wind. These drones aren't super light. I wouldn't fly in winds that high myself at all. Takes the enjoyment out of flying always fighting the wind.

Good info here. Ome QQ or clarification point about the compass calibration procedure: The manual I have lists step 2 as "Nose Down & Counter clockwise" and the Video instructs "Nose Down & Clockwise". Can you confirm which is correct? My manual could easily be an older version with a misprint, and wondering if it may have something to do with problems people have experienced?One additional question that I'm wondering if anyone on here has also seen similar behavior or can answer my question. Can the copter become disoriented and behave erratically if I were to say complete the compass calibration in an apartment a few floors above ground level, and then walk down to street level to fly and ground level doesn't make sense to it anymore. I have noticed that mine became erratic after taking to a foothills area, calibrating for that area,, then returning home to a slightly lower elevation, even with GPS Locks in both locations, or out of GPS altogether, it struggles to hold altitude and position. Initially, when all flights were launched from home, which is the initial calibration point, the thing was solid as a rock, even in high winds. Now, it likes to test me, so it's on a very short leash, I guess a more technical question would be, how critical it is that the pitch,, tilt, & alt indicators on the transmitter read zero across the board when the copter is going to be calibrated? And I guess add to that,, if one of these items does not read zero, how would we get it back to zero?Sorry, that 2nd question ate up some space, but seemed relevant to info in your video. +Jerry Taylor Since Hubsan hasn't provided an answer, I can attempt to answer based on my use and from what I've read elsewhere. I'd suggest you recalibrate the compass for each new day or new take-off location (some firmware like v1.1.9 requires compass recalibration every time you plug in the quadcopter battery). GPS doesn't provide instantaneous heading information, but the compass does. Different areas may have different local magnetic variation. I have not noticed any difference whether turning clockwise or counterclockwise during the second phase of compass calibration with the green lights flashing when rotating the quad with the nose pointing down. The barometric pressure sensor is what is used to determine where the ground is and altitude in Altitude Hold mode, and it may also be used as an input to the flight controller even in GPS Hold (not sure about their implementation). At some undocumented point in the startup or calibration, it must save the barometric pressure reading to establish where 0 altitude is. It could be done after inserting the quad battery, upon takeoff, or as part of compass calibration. So to be sure, recalibrate the compass every time before taking off and especially if you've moved to a location with a different elevation. Having Roll and Pitch read 0 during Gyro Sense calibration is critical to maintain level flight. Early firmware apparently establishes this on power-up or as part of the first phase of compass calibration (red rotating flashing lights). Later firmware allows independent Gyro Sense calibration. If yours isn't reading 0, 0 for roll and pitch when it is set on a level surface, check to be sure the rubber feet at the bottom of the motors are all the same height. If still not reading 0,0 put something thin underneath the rubber feet such that it does read 0,0 and reinsert the quad batter and perform compass calibration again.

What do you mean by RTH altitude? I believe it remains at the altitude you have it at when you enable RTH, then it gets to the direct overhead position of your home spot, then descends.

This is why you always fly line of sight and above the highest object in the area. That way when you activate RTH it won't navigate into a stationary object. It will stay at flying altitude, stop, and return to launch position and slowly descend and land. This drone does NOT have object collision avoidance. If you buy this drone to snoop in on neighbors and lose signal you're screwed.

Thank you. I seems that when I have left the Hubsan on a level surface for a while the gyro signal comes and goes quickly or does not show at all. If it has been in the box on it's side that seems to generate the sign.

Unable to get Photo or Videos to save on Micro SD card. Press photo button, get red photo appear in screen, no beep. On video press video button, Record in red appears but then no beep or recording counters appearing. Was brand new card, after first attempt failed, i reformatted card but nothing saved on card 2nd time either. Its a 64Gb Micro SD Class 10 is that suitable. Going to try an old 2GB class 7 and see if that works, just puzzled or is it faulty? only 2 days old.

Hello. This is an SD card format problem. First, see if your drone is an SS or an S. It will need to be formatted to exFAT. If your drone is an SS, make sure that your SD card is less than 64GB (recommended 16GB max) and class 10 or higher. It will need to be formatted to FAT32. Make sure that in both cases, the Allocation unit size is set to 32KB and that the Volume label area is blank.
