Take it outside, bind it to the transmitter, do the calibration dance, and wait up to 15 minutes to see if it can find the satellites at all. If it never changes from NA or 0, then obviously something is wrong with its GPS. Make a short unlisted KZbin video "clearly" showing the problem, then contact your vendor's customer service with this link to see if they'll resolve. If they don't help, then file a dispute with your credit card company or PayPal for receipt of a defective product. Include the video link with your dispute.

As always, nice review Q101. One very important correction. Low quad battery does NOT trigger automatic RTH . Only loss of transmitter signal by the quad will trigger the failsafe automatic RTH. Headless mode reference heading for headless mode is not the heading the quad was pointing takeoff. It is the direction the quad was pointing when it enters headless mode and is updated each time you reenter headless mode. So if you exit headless mode and reenter headless mode, the reference heading will change. This makes headless mode practically useless for manually piloted return to home. Good thing it has autopilot RTH and GPS!

Pretty neat copter ... hefty price goes along with all those features. Like most everything about it except its built in FPV screen, which would be mostly useless in any kind of sunlight. Couldn't see anything in your video that you were describing on the screen, so we'll take your word for it. Had to go to the site to check its features, as when you first started describing it, you said it had brushless motors, then later in the video you said it had brushed motors, so I wasn't sure which it had .. and it is brushless as noted in your "show more notes". I'm sure Hubsan will be asking for your other arm or leg for the matching goggles so that you can actually see something. Then, there's the question about its range, both for the quad and the FPV signal. I see it listed as 300m, but, that could just be advertising. Would like to see you do a real time test of that range .. you could use Google maps to draw a line between take off point and where you lose either control signal or FPV signal and get an accurate distance. This one kind of 'breaks the mold', as it doesn't fit any real category: it's not a camera bird; its not a FPV racer. I guess it's ... ah ... innovative .. yeah, we'll go with that ... innovative! Good review ... I hope you kept your promise to doggie and let her out for a 'walk'. Cheers!

+Yazgersfarm Bring up the area to measure in Google Maps. Zoom in if necessary. Right click on the starting point, and from the drop down menu, select "measure distance". The next place you point to and left click on, will be the end point, and a line will be drawn between start-stop, and the distance will be shown. You can also do this with Google Earth.

👍👍WOW what a blast from the past! This video is one reason I bought the H501S way back in early 2017, my first GPS drone with RTH, and loved it. I flew it for at least a year and literally wore it out. In fact, it and all the accessories are still in a box, including a brand new unused body shell. I only stopped flying it after it began ignoring my controller commands and began flying uncontrollably and crashed a couple of times. Of course, by then I had tried all manner of KZbinr firmware updates, etc. I then moved on to the Mavic Mini and currently the excellent Mini 4 Pro. Still I miss the days when we could modify our drones and even purchase el cheapo 3rd party batteries. Yep, those heady days of cheap drones without all the suppressive drone regulations were what I consider the golden days of drone flying. Anyway, I didn't know your channel was still active until getting a KZbin video recommendation a little while ago. As always, regards from Thailand!😁

Hi Sir I own own of these 501s. Yesterday it dropped with no apparent reason to the ground. I was flaying regularly, and it did not react to my requests to gain altitude, and suddenly drop down. Great review. These have proven to be 'Dad friendly', he brought one as his first drone that he can fly without crashing and now takes it everywhere with him. The return home is very useful if you lose track and need a get out of jail free card.

This shoots better video than the Bebop 2, much better colors, brightness and sharper video. Bebop 2 has it beat in steady video, flying features (points of interest, waypoints, etc). And IF you get the Skycontroller, you can fly a helluva lot further (up to 1.3 miles). Also there is an app you can use that has follow me mode. Their own app, Free flight 3 doesn't have that. That being said, the Hubsan H501S is a helluva value for what it can do. Makes me second guess my Bebop 2 purchase, but once I got the Skycontroller for my Bebop 2, it became a beast (as far as distance). IF it had a better camera, the Bebop 2 would be up there with DJI & Yuneec. This Hubsan H501S is quite tempting.

You could, but goggles are not needed. You can view the live video stream on the screen of the transmitter. It's just a bit hard to see the screen in sunlight.

well I finally ordered this quad and it has dramatically improved my flying. yes I am even banking at full throttle in every direction now. I wanted something with GPS that I could grab and toss it up in my back yard during TV commercials if ya know what I mean? My big Hubsan 109s High Edition and my Phantom 3 takes to much prep for those kinds of short flights. I really love the h501s and it flies freakin awesome. the only criticism I have is that in altitude hold it tends to Bob up and down for awhile before it finally settles down. the GPS hold mode is really good. Now I just gotta find a little case for it. I've seen them on banggood but shipping takes forever when I order from them. I've seen one or two cases on Amazon but they cost way too much 50-60 bucks. screw that. ha.

I see that the transmitter only uses AA batteries how long do I need to buy or recharge my AA batteries. Also your time stamp is 20mins of flight time that is cool, any way to have it longer with 3rd party batteries.

I'm really glad you reviewed this quad. I just ordered it a few weeks ago. Did you know you can go into parameters and change things like have it face forward when going home. There is an update for it but, people have been have issues like toilet bowling and not holding altitude. And you were able to have the lights stay on solid with this update. I don't know if they fixed all the issues in the update or is it even a Hubsan update. So, update at your own risk if you want steady lights. I'll wait! Thanks for the awesome video! I can't wait to get mine.

The screen on the transmitter seems to be a glossy one. Not the best one for outdoor flying. I've a H107D for a while. The screen has a mat finish and it's already difficult to see in bright environment. Interesting by the way. I'll check this one for a price drop even if it's already a good one. Love this video and I have ordered the advanced version of H501s copter. In many places people recommend to use a 3s rechargabel lipo battery in the controller instead of the 8 AAA batteries. (the advanced version has a built in JST connector, so no need to mod the controller itself.) But the 3s lipo is 12V while the battery of the copter is a 2s lipo (7.4V) My question: can I use the charger shipped with the copter to charge the 3s lipo, or do I need to purchase a separate charger for the 3s? Hello , I have a hubsan H501s and after an accident , I replaced a right front engine + esc . upgraded to 1.1.17-1.2.9 but now the left front LED changes color from white to yellow after a few minutes of flight . Battery change back to white, but after back yellow !!! because? thanks very

How many volts does the battery hold? I got this and the drone is amazing it's just as soon as I got it, I charged the battery for 2 hours and it was still red. So I kept it charging for 1 day and it was still red so I decided to start this baby up. When I did, It said ONLY 7.3-4 volts and the battery juice level of the drone was 1 BAR and I only got about 5-7 MINUTES of flying time. I charged it AGAIN for a DAY and it STILL was only like at 1 bar and 7.3-4 volts. What is the problem? (I bought it new but opened, not flown though) If I could get a reply that would be great. Thanks!

Fully charged it should be 8.4V. The fault is either your charger or your battery.

Not sure, but Hubsan may have changed some things since this video was made. Recommend checking the instruction manual to see if any of the controls have been changed.

I bought this H501S because of your review and I thank you for that. What I noticed is it's a bad idea to fly it from dirt road and or beaches as the small grains of dirt/sand can go inside the motor and will make it noisy and not as reliable anymore. I purchased this quad a couple of months ago. It flew pretty good and looked great. However, after 2 flights, the controller got stuck in home mode and would not start. I tried a number of things and nothing worked. I couldn't get any response from customer service, so I ended up sending it back. It's a shame, because I did like it otherwise.

You are a bit ill informed they are upgrades available for that drone and controller and you can record from the remote. You can get the updates to the firmware on hubsans website. The upgrades allow you to turn off and on leds etc.

have you noticed when turning off GPS it goes much faster!?...but also has a tendency to fall from the sky tumbling and almost crashes to the ground! i have been lucky so far to correct it while falling!....so! what is that??

Made my choice and got the 501S as I already have the Spyhawk camera plane and I have been pleased with that. I ordered the back pack shell case at the same time which was a great buy and now I have had the unit a few weeks now I can only find one thing against it - the Tx eats batteries. I have now changed and use rechargeable NiHi batteries (4 X 2700mA) but still they only last a few flights at best. Why Hubsan stick with the alkerline batteries I will never know as my Spyhawk plane was the same - I can only think they have shares in Duracel. I intend to change the Tx to a 2S LiPo with a voltage regulator which should be better. Other than that well pleased with the 501S as its a well made bit of kit and does what it says it will do straight out of the box. Always enjoy your reviews but this time I got the one I wanted before your review came out. Regards Peter

It sounds like you left the battery plugged in accidentally overnight (or longer). This may damage the battery beyond repair. the battery voltage should bever be allowed to drop below 3 volts per cell (6 volts total for the two cells). As yours is at 4.9V, it is likely damaged. Sometimes they can be reconditioned back above 7V with a balance charger. But it may be better to just purchase another battery (about $15).

Just recv'd my 501s today. The manual states to rotate the quadcopter nose down and COUNTER clockwise for calibration 2. I see everyone doing clockwise in videos. Does it make a difference?

I would go with the DJI Mavic - the hubson is good toy + grade quad with the photos and video shakey - the DJI with the 4K camera and gimble is so much better at a cost of around $1,000 v $225 for the hubson. The mavic is my next upgrade.

THANK you for this -- I waited and waited for this one when it was listed at $219 on multiple sites -- but then when it was released - I saw it as high as $499. It is coming down but I will wait -- but I WILL own this one --- it looks terrific. Did you look at the others? H201S and others? (I think there is a non FPV version of this quad) -- How would you say the screen was on the controller? -- Do you think this one will be one of the "Keepers" - ?? -- ALSO -- did you know that there IS a different "Camera Mount" that you can buy? - I like the fact that batteries are only $20 each -- I did end up getting the XK Detect X380 and I was not disappointed -- but batteries cost as much as $50 each for the 5400mA

+Yazgersfarm I have the H501S camera mount coming for review. Regarding the X380, you can put smaller batteries in at significant savings (for example V303 batteries). But as expected, flight time will be reduced with smaller batteries (for example 15 minutes instead of 25).

I've been pleased with the H501S. Both the drone and controller seem to be well made. Unfortunately I've only been able to fly it in my backyard and won't have a better opportunity until the weather warms up. Oh to have the expanse of the desert to fly in. Thanks for the great review.

Excellent speaking voice. I think you demonstrated more features and was easy to understand everything you were saying. I like how you said what you were going to do and then demonstrated what you would do if you were flying the drone and what you were going to accomplish by following those steps. You should be doing reviews and demonstrations for all drones!
