Andy, there is a two stage LVC. Warning lights on rear start to flash at 7.0v. The voltage resolution and associated telemetry on the quad is a bit ropey and tends to fluctuate quite widely when you apply power for instance. Below 6.8v the lights become solid and it auto lands at 6.6v This can happen quite rapidly especially if the cells are not properly balanced. I rarely use the follow me function for its designed use, however it's really handy when you lose orientation. I'm predominantly a LOS flyer so I know all I have to do is flick on GPS, switch Follow me, and the quad is directly facing me. From there I can disengage and fly as normal knowing that the head is pointing towards me! Cheers.

Excellent review. Thanks for sharing. I have one on the way, new to quadcoptors. I did dabble with fast electric boats years ago and if ever I had a 'rough' sounding bearing in a brushless motor, I used specific oil to lubricate it. This has a needle to precisely oil the shaft into the bearing and works a treat. I'll check the bearings when it arrives.

I had the oroginal h501s with standard transmitter but it fell from the sky like a stone balloon for no reason. I loved it as in one flight as a newbie I took her up to 240 meters. I want another hubsan, so would you say advanced one is better? I must admit, love controller size of new.

Unless you get a GPS signal indoors, you won't be able to arm (start) the propellers. It needs to connect with multiple satellites to be armed.

I just bought a Hubsan 501S Advanced and I'm going to use a small MIGHTY MAX 12 volt deep cycle battery to power my remote. (About $20) It should last a long time before needing to be charged. The battery will sit on the ground with connecting wires that will plug into a receptor that I will install in the remote. I heard a lot of stories about how fast the remote sucks the power out of the eight AA batteries so I came up with that solution. I'll never need to buy AA batteries for it now. Just thought I'd share the idea.

The 8 battery model controller already uses a JST plug, just buy an adapter cable from the lipo Deans connector, and plug the lipo directly into the controller. You can buy one that will squeeze in. Just attach the cover using velcro and use it partially open.

Is there a way to get the last screen shot of the gps coordinates after you turn it off . I should have taken a screen shot with my phone. It said it was 98 meters away and 12 meters in altitude. So basically 300 feet away and 36 ft up in the tree really really difficult terrain in the Florida swamp. Even if I find it how will I get it? First to find it tho

While reading the manual I think I saw there saying the transmitter can only use 2S Lipo, 4xAA or Ni-MH batteries. Not sure if they are talking about the earlier versions of this quad. Thanks for the response. I received mine a few weeks back fro gearbest was working okay when I tested it out for the first time. As I get familiar with the new TX somehow if I move the the throttle stick in mode 2 sideways it was not working anymore and thought I caused the issue using a 3S Lipo. :)

Hi Andy, When you talk about the battery connector, you don't recommend to change the connector for a XT one. Is there a reason for that? First, I think about warranty issues but maybe there are some other ones... The point of this detail is the original connector seems to allow some reverse polarity or maybe I'm wrong. When I go to the field early in the morning to fly alone, relaxed, etc., I can be a bit forgetful. And burning a preciousss like this one would kill me... ^^ Cheers.

I dont recommenced it simply because theres a good chance the two bare wires of the battery can touch Sure if done properly and you know what you are doing...one at a time etc, then theres less risk the quads battery connector is also very close to the body. I could see a lot of people melting the plastic of the body with a soldering iron to get it done. of course you can take it all apart and do it properly but thats no fun either. easier to make up a charger cable for the blue connector.

I've seen these connectors a few times on videos but I've no idea of the safety involved. The XT connectors are idiot-proof once properly mounted and I can't be an idiot all day long. ^^

Nice review. I purchased an H501s before the professional version was released. I had to return if because that cheaper transmitter was having firmware and hardware issues which Hubsan was unable to resolve. The transmitter in the Pro version seems like a far better match for the H501s. I am tempted to pick up the Pro version especial at the price Gearbest is offering them at.

Apart from the original X4 (which could be ordered in Mode 1), all Hubsan transmitters seem to be stuck in Mode 2 unless you use a soldering iron.

I have this quad. My LEDs blink constantly, and the time between blinks makes it hard to fly at night. Your LEDs remain solid. Any idea how to change this setting? I would like my lights to blink faster or not at all.

The manual tells how to change the lights, I just wasn't doing it right. Press down and hold the throttle trim down switch. changes from no lights, to flashing, to constant on.

Hi Andy, My advanced controller FPV screen went blank after 2 minutes into my maiden flight out of the box. The battery voltage during calibration was 11.8 volts. Did the compass calibration and all was perfect. More than 6 GPS signal and I flew. The screen was ok but suddenly went blank. I quickly landed the drone since it was only hovering at low altitude. What do you think is the problem? Now when I switch on, it's all blank. Please guide me. Tq

Andy, Now that I have the Aomway Commander V1, I got out my H501S, but cannot receive video transmission on the V1’s! Cannot find the frequency on the V1’s. Less important: I have it bound to the H501C gamer style transmitter, which downgrades the H501S to the H501C. I may need to get the featured TX you flew or the step down model. Hi Andy Wondering if you can help me I have a H501C model and have upgraded to an Advance Transmitter That binds OK the problem I have is I do not have the Video and Camera symbles on the screen, I realise I do not have FPV, but would expect I should still be able to record video and pictures to the card on the Quad, I have tried the entry and exit buttons they appear to not record to the card except to say I recorded 34 sec. of video. but have not been able to repeat it again, any ideas Regards Geoff.

Do a search here on YT for this mosel and 'range test' or 'antenna mod' and you will get what you want. Parabolic reflector on the vertical antenna adds considerable range to an already impressive distance. Instruction also on YT to make one for pennies.

It looks like a great quad for the money, BUT to me it's frustrating that they made the camera a fixed angle. It would have been better if you could adjust the tilt before flying. I can only hope in the next model they add that improvement.

Hi Ken, I bought at helicopter 11.1v 3s lipo from the local hobby store, cost $35. You also need to buy a suitable charger to charge it. You will also need a small adapter cable to get the JST connection into the Hubsan.

Hi Andy very good review I actually just got mine today after ordering it from the links above. I have a question about the transmitter battery. Can I charge it using the original hubsan charger that came with the drone ? I can see that it has the same connector which fits into the charger but "this may sound stupid" the red wire is in the middle of the charging jack instead of 3 wire (black, white,red) in the x4 battery, so (black, white, red) compared to (black,red,empty). So is it safe to charge it on the same charger or would that burn my original charger , or do i have to remove the red wire and connect it to the empty slot in the jack to make it as (black, empty, red). thanks again.

I got this quad with the upgraded transmitter last week and for the two flights I had, loved it. Over the weekend I did firmware updates. Unfortunately, I used the HubsanUS.com firmware and it is for the standard transmitter and now I can't fly. Any idea where I can get the firmware for the upgraded transmitter? I've reached out to Hubsan support but have gotten no response and can't find it posted anywhere.

Jason Cross - Yes after some back and forth I finally got the correct firmware. Now my issue is that the quad keeps trying to go vertical on its own. Almost flew away a couple of times. Hubsan CS told me to pull it apart and peel back a sponge on the barometer. When this thing works it's a great quad but the times when it actually does work seem to be getting fewer and further between.

Cool, glad they sorted the firmware for you, what a pain to buy a new advanced controller so that was lucky. Never had an issue with it going up without being told. Please can you let me know if peeling the sponge on the barometer works as no doubt I will face the issue someday 😳 I guess all RC stuff is the same, great when it works and annoying when it doesn't...I used to have Niro cars and RC buggies but after a while you spend more time fettling with them than actually driving them...hopefully quad coptering will be more productive as my H107C is excellent fun and bomb proof 😎

How many volts does the battery hold? I got this and the drone is amazing it's just as soon as I got it, I charged the battery for 2 hours and it was still red. So I kept it charging for 1 day and it was still red so I decided to start this baby up. When I did, It said ONLY 7.3-4 volts and the battery juice level of the drone was 1 BAR and I only got about 5-7 MINUTES of flying time. I charged it AGAIN for a DAY and it STILL was only like at 1 bar and 7.3-4 volts. What is the problem? (I bought it new but opened, not flown though) If I could get a reply that would be great. Does the Hubsan 501S have any factory dependable calibrations at all, or is it normal to calibrate like this in the beginning?

The current shipping model is the Hubsan 501SS (double S's on the model number) and some have newer GPS modules in them that offer automatic compass calibration so you don't have to do it every time you fly. Some people like that feature, some don't. Personally, I like to calibrate the compass every time I fly. It is also advisable to perform the 'horizontal calibration' as well as the 'rotational calibration' once in a while or after a crash or hard landing and even after firmware updates. Those extra calibrations are described in the manual.

yes it comes in mode 2 and u can change to mode 1

hi Andy great review. your video helped me make up my mind. so I've taken the plunge and ordered one from gearbest. however I am now beginning to think I have made a mistake as gearbest have taken my money and not sent me anything. they are also not answering my emails with anything other than an automated response. Have you had any issues with them?
