Hubsan Zino Mini Pro - Firmware v1.3.3 - Over The Snake River Canyon

This flight at the Snake River Canyon is with the second Hubsan Zino Mini Pro sent to me as a replacement by Hubsan support. The drone is on firmware version 1.3.3. While I'm still not happy with the video quality, the drone performed great. This is the most stable drone that I've ever seen from Hubsan. Let's hope that firmware updates can improve the camera performance.

Glad to see Hubsan have sorted you out, I have had nothing but problems with mine since it came out of the box !!!!!! I bought the 3 battery option pack with each battery having 5 cycles on them now and only managed to get the thing to take off 3 times !!!!!! It just wastes batteries because it wont connect, USB disconnected, aircraft disconnected, Geomagnetic sensor failed to initialize, then after rebooting both controller and aircraft for around 15 minutes and if your lucky the warnings will go away, then it wont pick enough satellites up, and then that's another battery cycle wasted !!!!! I've sent Hubsan the error reports, screenshots and several Emails and nothing from them 😪 I'm starting to think that the only reliable flight I will have with this thing is when I throw it in the bin !!!!!

Hey Marcus, great flight and the canyon was as gorgeous as ever. A couple of thoughts, saw a little sun flare, but it was back into the sun, so not a surprise. After you brought the gimbal up from “I love you so much” there was a tilted horizon and then just a little bit later it tilted the in the other direction, so a little work is needed there. Lastly, I see a slight blue/green tint in the video that I don’t prefer. BUT, it’s coming along and the actual handing of the drone seems to be doing very well‼️. There isn't a better-viewing and more daring area than the Snake River Canyon to test a new quad, my friend, Marcus. This new Hubsan Mini Pro seems so much more stable than its bigger Hubsan cousins. Its flying software should be ported on them, especially the Zino 2. Its camera is excellent as well. I wonder strong wind-wise how it compares with the DJI mini 2 and SE, Overall this young bird is very impressive including its auto-RTH feature. Thanks for sharing!

Nice flight Marcus. Looks much better than the first Zino mini. Some odd glitches in the video, but some are in video off your Go Pro too, so looks like YT or post production glitches rather than on the raw drone video. The canyon really is a special place. Definitely an improvement over your previous Hubsan Zino Mini Pro flights, but issues remain. I don't know what glass they have on that camera lens, but it has the same sun flare issues from the old Hubsan Zino. The jello is still present, and I'm thinking this is a mechanical issue, and not something a firmware update can fix. In typical Hubsan fashion, I expect the SE to fix a lot of the issues

Such a beautiful place. And thank you again for uploading these samples. Just lots of flying and letting the footage do the work instead of some unnecessary toxic drama. I've been watching a lot of your videos and gorillaman's, and based on many other flying samples from all over the globe, I'm so glad I didn't make an impulsive buy. Glad I waited and did more research. I still see jitter and the image/video quality is unacceptable to me for a $500 drone, output more akin to a sub-$200 drone. It's my first time buying a drone so I was shocked to find out many things do not work out of the box and we have to jump through hoops to get them to work (various calibrations) or wait for them to be added via firmware (such as 48mp shooting). I'm now eagerly awaiting the autel evo nanos.

@@govindacek autel evo nano is 600 in my country, (edit: 625, I'd gladly pay the difference for something that works as it should) hubsan zmp is 550. The zmp should not be more than 250 with all its troubles and things that don't work out of the box. The DJI mini 2, which I too almost bought but didn't because I do want obstacle avoidance, which led me to the zmp, produces superior footage and works as it should out of box.

Watching it close on a large 4k screen I can still see some jello (some times not that obvious, others it's more noticeable) and I think hubsan has to be able to deal with this at the gimbal level with some firmware that changes gimbal behaviour, otherwise it would need some hardware replacements like the gimbal rubber dampeners, or propellers... The jello/micro-shakes issue should not be solved on changing the image processing or electronic stabilisation algorithm, that will only deteriorate details on image quality (and I've red on RCgroups forum that some people see firmware 1.2.9 having better image details than latest 1.3.0~1.3.3). With this out of the way hubsan needs to implement the video HDR mode (because shadows look too dark) and maybe they are still just using 12MP from the 48MP sensor (they say in mid October they will release 48MP photos) so maybe that's why the zoom is not being recorded, on the FPV it might look ok but on a large 4k screen zooming 6x (basically cropping) on a 12MP image is not going to look good. If the sensor is really the OV48C it should be able to do HDR on the chip itself, so that's a reason to still choose this bigger sensor over the SE model (even though I think there will be an SE version with this sensor and SE has memory card and records H.264 that might help on some specific situations.. but I don't belive the chips on this Zino Mini Pro can't do H.264 it just has to be enabled at the firmware level). Just wondering if using an ND filter on this camera would help to reduce or eliminate the jello effect - because it will add some inertia to camera and change the shutter speed.. Just found out there is already ND filters selling for ZMP on aliexpress.. hum..will have to try it ;)?

These are excellent questions and suggestions regarding the jello effect and overall image quality coming out of the ZMP’z Omni Vision image sensor. I agree that once they unlock the 48MP that is missing we’ll hopefully get to see a cleaner and much sharper image. I find that when the camera is set to manual, depending on what your lighting conditions are, without an ND filter, your just not going to get the best results from the camera. So ND filters are most needed for the ZMP, especially if you want to put that image sensor to work. I do hear that Hubsan will eventually put out some Lena filters for it at some point but not sure when that will be. What I really would like to see (rather hear) is a different start up chime. I would prefer to hear a quick and quieter chime when turning in the drone. It becomes a bit annoying to hear it every time you turn it on, even when you have to transfer the files to a computer. So a quieter sound is needed as well. Hopefully they can look into that.

Thank you for the nice update on the HZMP. I will be a bit more critical of the drone from my view behind my computer. I still see four problems. 1. That annoying yellow screen warning at the beginning. How is that not fixed by now? 2. I saw significant green camera lens flare at the bottom of the video. 3. The zoom still does not work. 4. The color seems flat to me - the colors don't pop for such a bright day. Just my humble opinion...

Hello Jet. Mind you I had everything set on auto, however, the WB still looks cold to me (blue tint), there is also a fair amount of jello and micro shakes. Also a small amount of lens flare. I view the video on a 32 inch 4K monitor, so those details really show up.

I've seen it more so in other videos in lower light conditions but in this case from my perspective it didn't look at all abnormally blue compared to what I saw coming from your Hero 9. I wonder if that is coming from the lens..because the lens flare is blue-ish in color. That blueish tint is probably something you could compensate for if you needed to. Is there way to set the color temp (kelvn) on the drone? Regarding Jello...yea I'm just not seeing any jello. I do see some stuttering occasionally but that's VERY different then Jello or micro-shakes...it looks like the type of jittering you see in drone footage when you're flying in bright conditions and don't have an ND filter to "match" the shutter speed. It's possible that there were some dropped frames as well...I noticed that you had the settings at 100mbps (half the max bit rate) so I wonder if that contributed to it. It would be interesting the next time to bump it up to the full 200mbs rate and see if that eliminates the problem. The lens flair is the most obvious thing I noticed..it would be interesting to fly the Mini 2 at that same time of day and see how it copes with the sun. Maybe DJI has some different type of lens than Hubsan? In any case I thought it did quite well.

Hi Marcus. When you get the Zino Mini SE I need to know 5 things: 1. Does it fly well with locked in hover good in the wind and accurate RTH 2. Is its range at least 2 km with continuous fpv feed in an urban setting like Heroes Park. 3. Is the video almost as good or as good as the DJI mini 2 4. No real issues that cause headaches (ie. Is it ready to fly straight out of the box) 5. Is it better than the fimi X8 mini PS. I'm looking for an under 250g gps camera drone without geofencing/NFZ. Not really interested in OA or other bells and whistles. I'd consider the Autel Nano only if it is GREAT.

The camera/video doesn't turn on until you take flight to minimize overheating. Hubsan is afraid it will overheat if you leave it on the ground with camera turned on recording video. OA is the same you can't turn it on until you are airborne.

The camera creates a fair amount of heat. Hubsan is not allowing the camera on until take so the drone does not overheat. The green arch you see is called lens flare (glare). it occurs because the drone is facing the sun.

And I've not experienced it on my mini 2 and I fly in direct sunlight all the time. As for the heat, I agree that is why and it concerns me that excess heat will have a negative effect on the cpu long-term. I noticed that you didn't have the obstacle avoidance turned on during this flight and it would be interesting to see how that affects the heat in the cpu. I seem to recall that having the OA system turned on on your original mini pro caused issues.

@@gimpman1357 the truth is they have put to much tech in and the cpu can't cope with it. This situation comes with only one outcome, that being it will have very little longevity and will either breakdown or have recurring issues.

@@marks7171 Not necessarily. Once in the air I have no issues with heat running OA and recording. It is more for updating and file transfer and even then it doesn't run much hotter than my DJI Mini 2. Mini 2 gets hot idling and doesn't have the extra tech.

Hi Idaho, What is the situation and procedure that you had a Zino Mini Pro replacement? Currently, my Zino Mini Pro have a gimbal issue and shows "Gimbal is under protection, please check if the gimbal is stuck" on screen. I have tried to take out the cover on the bottom and remove and reconnect the cables, but the issue is still there. I have contacted the support for a few weeks, they still have no solution to fix my gimbal issue. Before I also have the same jitter with strike problem, now it get worse that the gimbal not working properly. I think 95% of the people buy this drone because of it's capability to record 200Mbps, why film in 100Mbps ?

I have no intention of manipulating the image in post production, so there is no benefit of 200mbs for me.
