@Huckberryco So I have the pilot waxed jacket and I’ve been ignorantly machine washing it. I still love it but it’s obviously all but lost its wax properties. Can this method allow it to be rewaxed? I love the jacket, waxed or not, so if realistically, if I’ll never truly regain the original wax properties I’m happy just to leave it be and enjoy as is. Thanks!

Awesome timing. I'm just about to re-wax my Flint & Tinder waxed trucker for the first time tomorrow. This jacket has become my favorite article of clothing over the last couple of years. I've worn it hunting, fishing, harvesting, and working - in the rain, mud, and snow. It looks better today than the day it arrived.

I have a filson trucker jacket and used otter wax. Here are my suggestions: Do you really need to rewax!? If water isn’t coming through , you don’t. It’s a meesy job with mixed results. Don’t use too much wax. I thought I did it the way this guy said and the heat gun still left significant streaks. I got rid of the streaks by putting it in a dryer that worked pretty well. Low heat for maybe 30 minutes. Got rid of most streaks. Hint: go to the laundromat and put it in with a couple of lint free rags. Check it every 15minutes. When the 30 minutes are up , immediately use the rags to wipe the jacket down. This got the streaks off better than the hear gun. Also: I only used about one half stick for my coat, so I didn’t really overdo it. Nice vid, but this guy had done a lot of them and knew the ins and outs a lot better than me.

Also good to use one of those bags made for more delicate clothes so the jacket isnt in direct contact with the washing machine. Just keeps more wax in the jacket.

I did this at 3am so no heatgun, used the friction of my hand to warm up and spread the wax evenly. I have been rocking waxed canvas motorcycle rainsuits since 1969. I make up a mixture of paraffin and mineral spirits to retreat waxed cotton and put the retreated garment inside out in a dryer for 5 minutes or less. Makes it come out looking like new with better water resistance. Make up the mixture to axle grease consistency. Looks like you've smeared snot on your jacket until the dryer melts it into the fabric.

after sweating for ages inside Polyester/Gore Tex garments I went back to wool and waxed canvas, and I like the results! (also considering the environmental issues micro-plastics present in synthetic fabrics have...) I wax (beeswax/paraffin wax) my construction worker´s garments and Royal Marine´s smocks in different grades of waxing (intense to light) in accordance to the use the garment is going to have, and I apply more there were it is going to be exposed the most. So far I am satisfied with the results, and besides the garments get this attractive "vintage look"... greetings from wild, wet, windy and wonderful Western Patagonia

You have to wash it at some point if it just reeks. Hand wash and keep hosing the jacket down till the water runs clear is best. If you use your washing machine, you will get a wax residue that is hell to remove- just don't do it. Hang to dry with a fan for a few days. Do not use the dryer!!! The fabric will shrink 2-3 sizes if you do. And you shouldn't dry it in the sun on a hot day either. No one buys these for work jackets so you may only have to do this once every 3-5 years or if it gets really soiled or if you wear it all the time. Plan on it taking over the course of a week. An hour to wash and rinse, a couple of days to fully dry (never wax damp clothing), waxing it takes an hour or two, and come back the next day to wipe off the oil, touch up areas and then it needs to dry for a few days while you wipe off excess oil/wax. If you do it the way they show here and get in your car, you will have waxy oil on everything and leave oil streaks everywhere. Never listen to a drunkard how to do anything. Keep drinking while making videos boys. This BS of Febreze or vinegar mitigates the smell but it doesn't kill the bacteria or actually clean it. You have to kill the bacteria and remove the grime on the inside. The people who say that is the way are the same morons who say never to wash your jeans. That level of stupidity has Dunning-Kruger effect written all over it and are for people with so much money they buy new clothes rather than wash stuff.

So, this is a complicated question: I recently had a housefire and one of the clothing articles saved was one of these jackets. Just got it back from the cleaning and restoration company and the wax is definitely not all there, yet doesn't seem entirely gone as water is beading up for a bit but then eventually soaks into the fabric. Does that equal rewax time or not?
@Huckberryco12 күн бұрын
Good question. Depends on how much you are going to wear it in wet conditions. Generally it's probably time for a re-waxing if water is soaking in the the fabric. If you live in a place were you don't see much rain, you could go without re-waxing it for a few more months. A re-waxing it won't hurt it, but it will enhance the protection against wet conditions better!

You should stick with what the company recommends. Fjallraven also uses a hard wax while Barbour uses a liquid wax. If you have an off brand jacket (vintage or out of business), it is up to you what you use. I used a UK paste wax on my Canadian made Australian Outback brand jacket. I still have a tub and half of that same wax, but I won't use it on my Barbour; so I have to buy some Barbour wax to do my jacket.

Would love to see a video about repairing a wax jacket. Mine was stored for years in a folded condition and has a large amount of significant wrinkles and folds which almost seem impossible to remove. Not sure I should even attempt to rewax the jacket before completely removing the wrinkles. Even using a heat gun on high setting while stretching the fabric has only removed some of the wrinkles.
@Huckberryco3 ай бұрын
Usually hitting it with a hair dryer will work to release wrinkles and ease some of the "patterning" from those creases. In this case, I have two suggestions. First, I think rewaxing would breathe new life into your jacket. The new wax will help ease those wrinkles and patterns. And second, wearing it more often. These jackets get better with wear and pick up marks that give it a "lived in" look.

Do you make hooded? How is it for welding and heavy industrial with grease and hot asphalt and such. I've always wanted something like this
@HuckberrycoАй бұрын
These jackets are constructed with a mid-weight waxed canvas. While substantial enough for everyday wear, I don't think I'd recommend them for heavy industrial work as they are spot-clean only, but that'd be one way to achieve a well-worn patina quickly. Regarding the hooded options, we recently launched a Hooded Waxed Jacket and added a snap-on hood to the Waxed Hudson. You can check them out here: bit.ly/4fopGkp

If you’re too lazy to re-wax, what’s the worst that will happen? Will it just lose it’s waterproof or will the longevity and durability be compromised?

The waxed canvas has a water resistance factor as well as contributing to the overall "look" of the jacket. I don't think the durability should be affected if you opt to skip rewaxing.
