Well, what a blast from the past of my childhood going to Spring Grove School and living just down from the school having watched over the 5 'episodes'. Great to see Mrs. Heaney ushering the kids onto the bus at the beginning of this video and the kid at 7:14 in the brown jumper I am sure he is called Jaspir!? For me and my brother is was a great time in our lives, we were poor but we didn't know that. We simply enjoyed our childhood and it's only now looking back that makes you 'gulp' as to how we used to live. I remember how I could count up to 20 in Urdu. How Mr. Meal would allow a couple of minutes at the end of our daily assembly, having said the Lords Prayer, for him to say "...and now for you to say a prayer to your god." How Mr. Meal would rely on my friend, Sohail Butt, to translate for visiting parents whose English was not as good. How I was taught during playtime how to say swear words in Urdu. Incredible piece of film, great kids, thought provoking, love the statement from the father who said he did not have the time to learn English as he was too busy working, did you see the pride in his face in his sons it put a big smile on my face.

Whilst working as a taxi driver for Ik Onkar taxis in the 90's my boss sent me to the Sikh temple to pick up a visiting priest. I was told he couldn't speak 'any' English. Half way through the journey; after me not saying a word, the guy suddenly asked me in clear unbroken English why I wasn't talking. The rest of that journey was bright and enlightening for both of us. And I think he jokingly complained to my boss about his language problems. Happy Days............

Hi Rajsamra Along with Kenny Crane and others we helped run Spring Grove youth club where many of these children went. It was owned by Father Nick. We lived at 72 Bankfield road. Sean.

Trevor Burgon was the headmaster at Spring Grove when I was lucky enough to attend.He was a wonderful teacher and even fifty odd years later I still remember him very fondly.

Sadly, the main child with blue turban moved to USA a few years ago & passed away. Most of the others are about, including myself with the red & white woolen top being told by the kinder garden teacher (a Mrs Tomlinson) that we would not see a "lawn mower"? Lol

@@benc640 i think that's a typical narrow minded ignorant statement many whites make. It's not that "they couldn't be bothered" to learn English. How can you learn if you can't read or write? A lot of immigrants were also of an age where learning was difficult. They were also busy working 2 and 3 jobs at a time trying to build a life from scratch. Do u think they had time to learn? Do u know how many brits emigrate to Spain and refuse to learn Spanish?
