Thank you so much for this video. It obviously resonates in many different ways to many different people as evidenced by the other comments. I was born nearly 72 years ago in Huddersfield and left in my late teens. I was astonished to see near the bottom of King Street that Goldthorpes Yard is still there. My first 18 months was spent in a basement tenement flat in Goldthorpes Yard. As my parents worked I spent the summers of 1950 and 1951 in my pram outside my Grandparents antique shop directly opposite. (Stanley's Antiques) I'm sure my sociable nature was a direct result of thousands of shoppers ( the old Market Hall was only yards away ) that I'm told used to stop and talk to me in my pram. So many memories flooding back! Thanks again.

Lived here since 1972 and I can safely say that Huddersfield is not at all what it used to be. The market was bustling every Monday/Sunday, Queensgate market in particular was also full of sweet shops, toy shops, and trinket shops. In the 70s, I used to go to a specific model car shop that had all of the beautiful Corgi/Dinky models on display behind the counter and shop window. Now you're lucky to even find the odd toy stall. It really is depressing how inanimate the town has become, having had a wonderful childhood here.

Huddersfield is a shadow of its former glory. I moved there in 2001 and have witnessed its gradual decline over the past decade or so. The council seem focused on the university, raking in money from car parks/parking fines, and laying waste to the Piazza for no discernible reason other than to have a pointless open space that folk can gawp at. If you could have seen the Huddersfield I knew from the early 2000s, and compare it to now, you'd weep.

In my 20’s, there were lots of lovely little boutiques in that town. Now it's all pound shops with lots of TACKY shop fronts thanks to the council. I hope they're proud of themselves, for when the populace looks back, they will look to which council it was when Huddersfield went downhill. Mind you, we already know!

Yep, kirklees clowncil are essentially forcing out businesses from inside the ring road to expand the university campus. they have already made it impossible to park and/or drive in town without the high risk of fines or caught in tailbacks. lets not mention the atrocities of allowing developers to build prefab tin sheds on top of older architecturally stunning buildings

I went there in 1991 and in 2003 and there's a grand train station there, one of the few really grand Victorian stations to have survived unlike so many others which survived the wartime bombing raids only to be mindlessly demolished in the name of so-called "progress" by total blithering idiots. I thought the bus station was quite well designed too, much safer than some I've seen elsewhere like the one in Bury, too many have been killed there. And do they still have the saturday flea market in Huddersfield? And there's too many "to let" signs there now, but at least it looks clean, unlike where I live which is FILTHY! And why have you not shown the train station? Surely it must be the grandest building in the whole town, you can't have a video about Huddersfield without showing the train station. And the friendliest place I've been in the north of England is Bakewell in Derbyshire, I got endless friendly greetings there, but that was about 20 years ago so I don't know if it's still the same now. And the most hostile place I've been to is some of the places on the east side of the Wirral, I got nothing but endless abuse there, and all in only a few minutes.

I'm from Huddersfield myself, you did take a strange route and missed some of the town center, the train station in particular which is the most eye catching building we have imo. The piazza center is currently in the middle of a multi million pound redevelopment which will see it be demolished and a large part of the town center rebuilt. It's a typical market town that hasn't had proper investment for over 50 years. So i'm hoping the improvements being made will make a difference to us locals.

There was a time when Huddersfield was rumoured to have more Rolls Royce per head of population than anywhere else in the world. Thanks to among others, Ripon Brothers (Rolls Royce bodybuilders), David Brown (tractors and gears) and many dozens of other high quality manufacturing companies in the engineering & materials (woollens) etc industries. Huddersfield still has some architectural gems, including the Imperial Arcade (and other arcades / yards but not the Pack Horse Arcade) and the library building, even the Town Hall! Sadly, over many decades, the inept local councils have fudged and bungled, allowing many other architectural gems to be demolished in favour of brutalist, concrete carbunkles precariously positioned between the architectural gems. (I'm thinking ABC cinema now a Sainsbury's and the Midland Bank among many others) (Who in their right mind ever allowed the Old Market Hall and the Cloth Hall to be wiped off the face of the earth?). The Kingsgate Shopping Centre is a prime example of council meddling. It was build 20 years too late. For 20 years, shops on the proposed development site became empty and derelict whilst a battle played out, essentially between a private company which wished to redevelop the site, and a second private company but with council investment also wanting to redevelop the site. Since both companies were frantically buying up the empty properties, and owned about half each, it dragged on for so many years. This left the bottom end of town as a wilderness or boarded up, decaying properties for far, far too many years. By the time it was eventually built in its current scaled down form, shopping centres had already stopped being tourist attractions, whether The Metro Centre (Newcastle), Arndale Centre (several), Ridings (Wakefield), or Meadowhell. I can't help noticing that even now the council are meddling, taking charge, then getting their fingers burned. Take for example, the George Hotel, the derelict hotel, a Grade 2 listed building, home to Rugby League. A building which the council have allowed to fall into disrepair and neglect, whilst at the same time, the council have spent countless £s on supporting, buying, proposing, investigating, approving, stroking their beards over coffee, having meetings about and employing consultants to advise them about......... Huddersfield is a Market Town. It's not the only market town. Some market towns attract visitors literally by the coach load. For example, Bury Market and Doncaster Market. Both operated by local councils (And for that matter, in run down, grim, northern towns). Then there's Huddersfield Market. In fact Huddersfield has or had 2 markets. And lots of open space. Plenty scope for development. The "open market" and the "new market hall" could have been developed. On market days, the whole town centre could have become one big market with stallholders on the open grounds and precincts around the Piazza, the Parish Church and everywhere between. But no, the Yorkshire council takes the Yorkshire attitude of paying too many people to tell them that anything they might do will be too expensive, leading to abandoned or hopelessly delayed schemes and countless £s of wasted money. Hope that helps ps Huddersfield resident from mid 60s to 2000.

Where to start, Huddersfield was my birthplace in 1946 at The Princess Royal Maternity Hospital and until 1965 I lived in Milnsbridge a couple of miles along Mancheester Road towards that place over the hills. I have lived in Kirkheaton 4 miles north east of Huddersfield since 1965 staying in the village when I married 50 years ago next month. Huddersfield was once a thriving town but this ended when we had the inept Kirklees Clowncil was foisted on us in the 70’s, you saw the state of the town on your walk, the lady was correct, there’s nothing to film here these days. At least you didn’t film the old sports centre and multi-storey car park surrounded by graffiti ridden hoardings, for that thanks. I haven’t visited the centre for many years because as you probably worked out Kirklees hates cars with a vengeance so parking is difficult and then there are the Bus Gates and fines for the unwary. You did miss the couple of gems in the town though, the parish church, which now has a bishop and the railway station, not the train station, that winds me up to a near heart attack, which was once described by former Poet Laureate Sir John Betjeman as “the most splendid in England” The latest Kirklees foolishness is the demolish some of the centre and put a field in the middle, your video could be a record of how things were in times to come. Sorry for the rant, I’m so cross what our once great town has become under inept management.

Totally agree. I've seen the plans / ideas about this open field area. Why on earth do they want to build some brown, timber framed and glass monstrosity next to the art deco library? I could agree with having a new building next to the library if it at least had a matching art deco appearance and outer material construction from the outside. I'm very closely connected to Huddersfield, but if I could live anywhere in the world, it would be Ypres / Ieper. They do things differently there. A medieval market town with not a single building over 100 years old and the buildings are constantly being rebuilt, reconstructed, redeveloped. But as a visitor, you would never know. All frontages are maintained, only the building interiors are ever changed. The whole market town of Ypres / Ieper is quaint, medieval, historic, a tourist attraction. I must stop thinking about this, Mike, as I'm not sure whose blood would boil the most, yours or mine! Even though I managed to escape over 20 years ago!

Moved here for Uni well over 20 years ago and somehow never found the sense to get back out. That being said, the common theme in the comments here is absolutely true. Hudds was a different place 20 years ago. Still a bit tatty even then but at least it had life. These days, the town centre feels as if the soul's been ripped out of it and there's nothing for locals to enjoy and certainly nothing to be proud of. Even in your video, the sense of depression is tangible! Pity you didn't include the one remaining jewel in the crown at the train station. As mentioned, a multi-million pound 'regeneration' is underway but the worry is it'll just be putting really expensive lipstick on a pig, rather than address the real issues of no decent employment and rife poverty.

Magnificent civic buildings. The accustomed Drab 60s architecture, like that tired Piazza Shopping Centre. Very clean urban environment. But As so often happens in Labour controlled local authorities, a total lack of trees lining and enlivening the streets. Not to mention water features or little pockets of grass and flowers. Why is that? Great walkabout. Thank you

There's nothing left of the 'old Huddersfield. It's sad to see all the closed shops, it's also disgusting that Kirklees council have taken away nearly all the parking spaces, especially those for the disabled, so you can visit the town centre. They've taken the whole street away down the side of sainsburys for parking, unless you drive a white taxi. Public never gets consulted properly, or at all, when it comes to making major changes. Its just all geared up for college and university students now ....... so sad 😞

Looks very rundown and depressing now, can't remember the last time I actually walked through the town centre. Lived in Huddersfield all my life, it’s changed beyond all recognition a shadow of its former self, queensgate market shut down, shops moved to different locations, they’re making the market into an eating place, the multi story car park demolished and, there’s supposed to be an events venue being built there, not sure if the regeneration is going to work only time will tell, yet apparently Barnsley is vibrant, sad to see this once vibrant town go down the pan, we could have had something like the medowhall but the council stuck with Henry Boot and we got kingsgate, there is by all accounts a cinema going into where house of frazer was, I’ve spoken with a few shop keepers and they have the opinion that the regeneration is too little to late

The lion. It's not stone. Unless it has been replaced recently. (since 2000) The original white lion atop the building which was modelled by John Seeley began, after a hundred and twenty years of weathering and environmental pollution, to crumble and it was replaced in 1978 by a fibre glass replica.

Large variety of types of buildings there. Really like the really old buildings and the old arcade with small shops looked good. Don't care for those modern big, bright flashing advertisement boards that are now everywhere. Full marks for maintenance and cleanliness. There are some nice looking buildings. Unfortunately the town has also been blighted by more than a few truly hideous ones. Not much in the way of trees, flower beds or other leafiness. It is very big; probably bigger than it needs to be, for modern shopping habits. How well does it cater for motorists? Parking needs to be convenient and inexpensive or people will just go elsewhere. All old-style town centres are now in competition with out-of-town alternatives, of which there are plenty to choose from. Good-luck Huddersfield -I have seen an awful lot worse.
