Huddersfield Narrow Canal / Standedge Tunnel

Huge historical mistake at the start. Manchester Ship Canal wasn't begun until 1887, a full 76 years after the Huddersfield was opened.

Where would someone find out more about methods used while tunneling to determine direction and elevation in the 1700s when canal tunnel was built? Just got done watching a narrowboater's recent video about this tunnel; they mentioned there was some mismatch in direction and height from the 2 ends where digging was being done, and while it is easy to fault the errors, it seems to me remarkable that they were anywhere near close at all.
