I am a Honda service manager and I'm 100% sure the blue on the screw is blue Loctite and not corrosion. WD40 is not always needed but can help. A proper fitting screwdriver is essential. Just simply be patient and go back and forth slightly and the screw will come out.

Hi Siroismike! I have a problem with my key fob. Now in order to use it, I need to be 4" close to the window driver side for use locks, remote window opening and tail gate buttons of the key fob, and only in this window. Bafore, I could use all buttons from 50´or more distance. I hope you can help me, this is driving me go nuts. I have a 2003 Accord Coupe EX-L, 4 cyl, I love it!

There is no "corrosion" - - the blue "gunk" is threadlock and is applied, by design and intentionally, so the screw does not loosen on its own over the years and fall out. The battery type is 1616, fyi. Applying WD40 REALLY shouldn't be necessary. All you really need is a #0 Philips head screwdriver, firm pressure, and turn counterclockwise without slipping the driver bit over the head of the screw. The "key" (sorry) is having the right tool for the job. The rest comes apart with fingernails. I did this on a first time replacement on a 12 year old key fob with no issues. The real usefulness of this video is getting to see the inside of the fob first, and though some of the information is inaccurate, a common issue with unverified information on the internet, I really do appreciate the effort and video post.

I have a 2007 Accord and my fob died. I don't have the time or patience to figure out how to get it replaced, so I stumbled upon this video. If not for John's advice, I surely would have stripped the screw to bits. Thanks to this video, I WD-40'd, found an eyeglass screwdriver that fit, GENNNNNTLY released that screw, and restored my fob for $6.43 cents. The battery was slightly tricky to find (Radio Shack as opposed to a drug store) but it was easy to put the key back together and *bwoop bwoop!!*, I'm back in business. Thanks a million, John!!

How could anyone (other than a Honda dealer)? not like this video? The speaker, John Adolfi, is correct in what he says, points out the possible difficulties in replacing a battery, describes accurately how to overcome the hurdles, is clear and has a good quality visual taking you through the process. John, thank you. I had never changed key fob batteries on my 2010 Accord. You made it possible for me to do so in just a few minutes for only the negligible cost of the replacement battery.

This video was very helpful. The battery in my fob was 8 years old, and had some crud around the screw. I cleaned out the crud, and tried using a cheap quality jewelers screwdriver but could tell it wouldn't work. Once I saw the video got a better quality set of jewelers screwdrivers and a drop of WD40. I used a #0 Phillips screwdriver, and a CR1616 battery. This was for my 2005 Accord.

I did this, but one thing to be aware of is that the factory uses locktite on the screw, so just wd40 may not be enough to get it loose. Use a hair dryer to heat it up and then the locktite will loosen up and the screw will come loose. This was per my local Honda dealer, by the way.

I couldn't get the screw out even after soaking overnight in WD40. On my way to the Honda service dept. I got the idea of visiting a local locksmith. He took the key to a back work area and returned in about 30 seconds with the key in one hand and the screw in the other. I took the key assembly apart as you showed and replaced the battery. After reassembly I had the locksmith replace the screw. BTW he removed and replaced the screw at no charge. My only expense was $6.00 for the battery from Radio Shack (CR1616 for a 2008 Honda Civic EX Sedan key). Honda was going to charge me $140.00! It was sure a relief not having to shell out all that money for something so simple. Thanks so much for such a helpful video.

Thanks for the clip, I googled how to deal with the blue locktite and put my hairdryer on to it and heated it up. I put it on the ground while heating it as it was too hot to hold while heating it. When it was really hot I then used the screw driver to undo it, and it worked. Yippeeee.....

Wish i had seen this video before i tackled replacing the battery on my 2005 Honda key fob. I ended up drilling the screw out. I was unable to utilize a nut and bolt to secure the outer casing after replacing the battery. I used a bit of black Shoe Goo to fill seal the hole, and the bond it created keeps the key fob case from being opened in the manner shown. Burnished the excess with an emery board. It looks ok and works perfectly. If i need to replace it again i'll simply remove the Shoe Goo.

Actually, the blue coating on the screw is loctite. The official fix from Honda is to heat the loctite so it will release. If you try to get the screw out without heating, you must just go slowly, with alot of pressure, otherwise you will strip the screw. He is right that you will need the correct screwdriver. An eyeglass screwdriver will not work. If you do strip the screw, you can break off the back shell, remove the screw, and replace both. You can also crack open the shell with a flat head screwdriver, (takes some practice), remove the internal portion and replace the battery. It is also easier to open the internal piece from the smaller side. The battery you will need is a CR1616. Make sure you replace the battery the correct (+) side down. Be sure to test that it is working before reassembling the key.

I was able to get the circuit module out without unscrewing the tiny screw which was stripped because of the loctite used. I just separated the two halves starting from the small notch found near the screw (top right side when looking at the Honda "H" side and with metal key pointing away from you). You don't have to totally separate the two halves, just enough to get the module out. Once it's out, unsnap to open and remove the dead CR1616 battery. Make sure the + side faces down when installed. Good luck.

I just got this done. At least my Honda Accord 2007 key had some sort of glue on the screw and heating it seems to be the only way to avoid stripping it. I only found this out when I went to the service desk at my local Honda dealer after trying unsuccessfully to unscrew it. They told me it was almost stripped and applying a little heat did the trick. I bought the battery for $3.79 + tax at Batteries Plus.

Good video! BUT... I called HONDA and they told me to bring it to the PARTS department at the dealership. They do it for free and charge you a for the battery. I was out the door for $5 and some change. But if you don't live near a dealership call someone who specializes in servicing hondas, if you bring them the battery they will probably do it for free. Or... DIY like this guy! The battery can be bought anywhere... very standard.

As others have said this is blue loctite not corrosion. My dealer service tech applied heat to the key part of the fob. This softened the loctite and could then be easily removed even with a rounded head. cr1616 is the battery.

John, nice job. I put this in my favorites for when my battery needs replacement. I would imagine the wd40 is the most important step. For I do not think it is corrosion you see but a locktite substance to keep the screw in place. The wd40 probably dissolves the locktite.

When all else fails for removing the screw, you can carefully pry open the fob by inserting a screw in the notch on the side and work around to the bottom. After prying it open, you can just slide out the battery pack.

I ended up finding this video too late, after stripping my screw head, but drilled it out and replaced the battery after that. Just wanted to add a quick comment that I did read somewhere online that if you hold the actual metal key in boiling water for 1 minute, this should weaken and melt the loctite glue and you should be able to easily remove the screw. While it is irritating that Honda used loctite when faced with replacing, I think it was more for keeping the fob secure.

I know alot of people have already said it, but thats not corrosion it blue locktite. They do that so the screw wont loosen up and fall out on you. Not because the dealer wants you to strip the screw and buy a new key fob. Believe me its much better than having it fall apart on you one day.

I noticed my key was loose, causing my car to not start, so I unscrewed mine to get a better look inside. it appears that the tiny holder inside the casing, for the actual key, towards the top, broke, which is why it is loose. It caused my car to go off, me trying taking it apart and trying to put it back together, but I'm curious if that tiny part can be replaced or some dealership will tell me I need to replace the entire holder, when it literally is a tiny piece on the inside I need replaced.

IF YOUR SCREW IS STUCK: DO NOT BOIL THE KEY- I saw a comment - YOU HAVE TO HEAT UP THE LOCITE GLUE THAT IS INSERTED ON THE KEY TO KEEP IT TIGHT. Take your blow dryer and heat up both sides of the key for 5 minutes. This will loosed the glue and finally the screw will come out. DO NOT keep jabbing at the key- will strip and you will be stuck at the dealership.

Here is the REAL advice about removing the little Honda remote key screw This is the ABSOLUTE ADVISE do this and you will remove it nicely the first time, and keep the same screw forever, unless you really want to spend your money and buy a new one from the dealer for 2$, or worse reprogram a new key for $125 or more (Unless of course the head of the screw has been damaged already in which case you'll use a rotary tool to remove the head of this screw. The grinder bit or drill bit should be the same size as the screw body. Do not force it, do it gently until the head is gone, let the weight of the rotary tool do the job) If the head of the screw is OK and not stripped as it should be, then do this: Get a Q Tip cotton swab and put some W40 oil on it , then touch the head of the screw with it and, if you want, on the side near the screw where the black plastic touches the metal of the key and tilt the key and let the oil run towards the body of the screw. Not too much W40 oil . Wait 15 minutes and then get a Phillips precision screwdriver SIZE 00, secure the key down and insert the tip of the screw driver on the head of the screw as close to 90 angle as you can. Put a fair amount of pressure down on the screwdriver , not too much but also not wimpy, and then slowly but firmly start turning the screwdriver anti clock wise . You will notice the head moving a bit hard at the very beginning and then normal. Once the screw is out and you have separated the 2 plastic covers a little bit, DON'T continue to separate them all the way, but ratter pull the the one plastic cover w/ out the buttons toward the front of the key, and that will completely separate them. If you continue to separate them it will probably break the tab in the back, inside. ALL THAT OF HEATING THE KEY WITH A LIGHTER, HAIR DRYER, FLAME, SOLDERING PEN ETC TO LOOSEN THE LOCTITE , EXPAND THE METAL ETC, IS NOT NECESSARY., IF YOU DO AS ABOVE. I have done 9 of these Honda keys in the last 2 years and, and I did not mess up any of them REMEMBER : Precision screwdriver no. 00 NOT 0 or 000 Good luck
@theoriginalalteff4
@theoriginalalteff4 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge. I used your advice to slide the covers apart instead of following my instinct to pry them apart (that would have resulted in breaking the tab). The operation was a success! The OP brushes over the critical piece of info at 3:33 and I believe he had already broken the tab.
