The fact that SPORTS was able to ascend to #1 on the Billboard 200 in 1984 is quite a feat. The competition was FIERCE. Only five albums made the summit that year: Thriller, The Soundtrack from Footloose, SPORTS, Born in the USA and Purple Rain.

Saw Huey Lewis and the News with a friend at Jones Beach in the summer of ‘01 or ‘02 during the “Plan B” tour. I was working for Tower Records at the time and the manager gave me her comp tickets because she couldn’t attend. In addition, these tickets included a pre-show hang out with Huey and the band. The show was amazing and Huey sounded fantastic, still hitting all those powerful high notes. After the show, and even though our tickets did NOT include a post-show meeting, we were nonetheless able to get in and got to relax and drink and hang out with Huey. He was the nicest guy. Totally cool and down to earth. It was easily one of the best concert going experiences of my life. ✌️

The story behind this gig was that Letterman couldn't afford the whole band, as they had become quite expensive. Huey actually stated that the backing band was so good, that he could have taken them on the road without any issues, good to go, on the bus, let's go. Love Paul back in his day, all spidey behind the keyboards. God I miss Letterman

Great gig from the early days of Letterman. Johnny Cola playing the sax was in rare form. He looked like he was really digging the scene, although the band could have been far nicer to him, just ignored him completely

Their early work was a little too new wave for my taste. But when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own; commercially and artistictly. The whole album has a clear crisp sound and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost.
