In 2001, my new hubby and I were flying back from our honeymoon in Acapulco. The airplane was full in coach, but First Class had extra room. The flight attendant came over and asked if one of us would like to move to First Class. Hubby used to fly First and Business class for his job so I jumped up. Like I wouldn't. When I sat down in my new comfy seat I looked to my left and there was Huey, smiling. He introduced himself and then introduced the News. They were all so down to earth yet so cool. It was cool. The whole thing was cool. I thought I'd feel intimidated because they were famous. I was at first, but after a glass of champagne that went away. Huey introduced himself to my husband after landing and we talked a few minutes more before he had to go. Huey and the News will forever be...🎶 too hip to be square 🎶to us.

Their early work was a little too new wave for my taste. But when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor. In '87, Huey released this; Fore!, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip To Be Square". A song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity and the importance of trends. It's also a personal statement about the band itself. Hey, Paul!...

Great singer, great interviewee, and great lesson to protect your hearing. I still have most of mine, but I should have always had earplugs and/or headphones handy. There's a lot of loud stuff out there: Concerts and clubs, power tools (including the mundane things like vacuum cleaners), and believe it or not... babies! A crying baby is as louder than a motorcycle (and nearly as loud as a jet engine), and you have to be in close range. I didn't think to wear earplugs until my first kid was already over a year old, but it made a huge difference when I started using them. Saved my hearing, but it also changed my parenting style. It doesn't feel like a crisis when you block out the screaming. I mean, seriously kid. It's just a diaper change! Point is, there are a lot of good reasons to invest in some earplugs: Some in the short term, but especially when you're older and have saved your hearing to enjoy in your retirement.

But they were still booked at the small colleges as I got to see him playing at 1,000 seat venue. And just a couple months after that, he was selling out large venue halls.
