Thank you all for your concern expressed in some of the below comments. Regarding the gills....they are exactly as they have been since i first got Pancho...nothing has changed with or without the addition of these fish. Regarding the light, Pancho has a lot of places she can hide in caves etc and still does not which would indicate to me she is happy with the lighting, plus the light looks brighter on camera. Regarding developing a fungus and becoming sick....it's been basically a month since this video was published and she is looking better than ever! Thank you very much for commenting and watching my videos :)

I have a Male axolotl same morph and hes about 3 time the size definitely older then yours by a little its beautiful to watch him grow with as many plants as I have I don't have to do as many water changes either the light isn't a issue hes by a window he has a natural day and night cycle and he eats any fish I put in my tank the more I put the quicker they go lol but bottom feeders like ghost shrimp and snails help with the purity of my water as well I think you are amazing and every axolotl deserves a more biological setup such as your. Keep up your amazingness lol

And Robert press to you sir unless you are a major in aquatic sciences and or a axolotl breeder or expert worry about your own fish tank. If you don't like how he keeps his aquatic life then just don't watch his video they are schooling fish with small bones so they can't hurt his axolotl and if the axolotl eats them there is no impaction when he/she poops and if MD got these fish from a proper pet store there shouldn't be and illness that little axolotl can get. So don't judge unless you know all your facts and the tank is big enough with enough places to hide the axolotl and fish can remove them selves quite easily

I love your tank setup and all the plants for the axolotl and great choice for substrate! Though, If you plan to keep the light on your tank I would recommend getting a water safe reptile cave so it can escape the light when it needs to. Also, it is safe to keep cloud minnows with axolotls if supervised but other fish will nip at their gills and have spines that can hurt the axolotl if it eats one. There is also a risk of choking if it tries to eat the snail. A good rule with axolotls is to just keep it an axolotl only tank.
@MDFishTanks5 жыл бұрын
thanks for the comments. There is a full cave structure in the tank in the shaded area. Danios and WCMM do not nip at my axolotls gills. I have observed for months and zero issues. This is Pancho's tank...she's the BOSS!!

Stunning tank! I'm assuming Pancho has passed away as we haven't seen him in 3 years- While I love the tank, for any Axolotl keepers, please remember they prefer dark and still water. Sacrificing their comfort for a beautiful tank is cruel & there are numerous parts of this tank that would stress Pancho out severely and lead to developing disease or infection.. It's much more important to create the best living conditions for the animal first and foremost, & design the best you can from there without sacrificing their comfort. I'm still a big fan of MD and his designs, but it's obvious the animals are second to the scape.

I've commented before about you possibly joining an axolotl group on Facebook because I feel like you could gain knowledge from it. To me, the gills or "fluffs" on your axolotl do not look good and this is probably due to all of the fish in there. It is also possible that if it gets too stressed by the fish it will develop fungus which is potentially life threatening
@Thund3rfist2 жыл бұрын
I'm a member of many fb axolotl groups and there's great info to be found there for sure! But honestly the gills don't look that bad to me. Some axolotls just have lighter gills. When you see the ones that are actually sick there is literally nothing there but a stump. I have one axolotl that has gorgeous floofy gills and one whos gills are fully intact and have many filaments, but they are thin and always have been. I do think he's pushing it with some of the things he has in the tank with them though.
@Kohalii5 жыл бұрын
No wonder your Axolotl has no gills. They usually have fluffy gills when housed properly. That axolotl gills were most definitely picked off by those tons of fish. You shouldn’t house them together. This axolotl will most like become sick and develop fungus because of stress and will die. Not to mention they hate light as they do not have eyelids Hate to see it.

In the last shots beyond 17:30 - the way your axie has himself wedged in that spot is an obvious sign of too much current for HIM. Not sure about how that many fish will effect his juvenile state, but from my experience with less fish, mine enjoyed growing up with the snacks. Watch the lower left corner, and he snaps at a fish which darts away into the glass. It then goes to it's left into the corner, and then turns back around. Pancho snatches it as it tries to go back by, and the tip of it's fin is what is sticking out of his mouth in the closeup. It is clearest right as you pull away.

But for long term care I personally wouldn’t suggests keeping fish with her especially such a large amount and fast moving all over the place fish like danios. Also the sand I’ve heard long term could hurt her. It’s better then gravel but they still could possibly hurt her long term if she’s swallowing it. I would consider doing some more research since I’m no pro or anything.

I've had axolotls for the past 6 years, I can tell you none of that is true. Fine sand is completely fine as a substrate, and you can keep axolotls with smaller fish on the consition that the fish don't nip at the axolotls gills. Since it's been in that enviroment for a couple of months and looks well, then the nipping isn't an issue for that species and as long as the axolotl is fed, then it will have no desire to eat the fish.

You are spoiling your Axolotl,😁. Mine even caught Denio and Mino didn't have a chance. I bet you got it by now... Some type of fish pick gills an tale of Axolotl actually.

Well you’re not the only one that travels using a seatbelt for the fish, I always do that too. Any plans to add another axolotl to the tank? By the way love to see the kids in the studio.

Anyone that calls an axolotl an "axie" before telling you how you care for it wrong should be immediately disregarded. There are a lot of weirdos that keep this particular species, but that's one of the red flags I've discovered to identify them.

I see a puffer palace in your future. Either puffers in a corner of aqs or in a stack of aqs in your upcoming gallery.
