It’s also worth mentioning that even though both Korean Air and Asiana have A380s, those two sets of A380s are not the same. They have different engines. This isn’t like their A330s, 777s, and A350s, where both airlines chose the same engine. The only other fleet that Asiana has but Korean doesn’t are CFM powered A321NEOs (Korean uses PW). Yes, Asiana also has a 767, but that’s retiring soon

You are correct! Korean Air was known to avoid Rolls Royce engines until recently with the purchase of A350s so it was one of the few customers of GP engines. But Asiana on the other hand went with RR engines

I love how they finally realize they really do need the A380's. Ever increasing passenger loads will keep it alive for a few more years.

Maybe they are trying to increase the value of these A380s so they can sell them at a higher value. As an analogy, renovating a house before selling will increase the value of the house. One potential customer is PW, since they have some aging 747sp testbeds and they could be looking for a pair of GP7200 powered A380s as new testbeds.

The A380 server an important segment of the market. Until deliveries improve from Boeing & Airbus I think they have a home in passenger travel

It’s a niche aircraft that works well on high density long range routes. On lower density, or seasonal routes, operational and maintenance costs of the A380 are an airline killer. It’s no accident that airline executives, people that have a fiduciary responsibility to investors, turned away from the A380 program in favor of the A350, B777 and B787. The A380 program was a white elephant from the time of its launch in Dec 2000. Simple question for the traveling public: Do you prefer a direct A350 New York to Nice or an A380 flight to CDG connecting to Nice? How many times has your luggage been lost in Paris? Sheesh…

Where is the Huge news? It's a pity that the A380 is disappearing because it's by far the most comfortable airliner, far superior to these unavoidable crappy B777, stuffing passengers in an awful 10 abreast configuration.

the 777 is wide enough for 10 abreast. the problem is its loud as hell and super dry.

If 4 engine planes are so horrible why are Airlines still using them, the A380 in particular? Everyone makes the same claim well maybe its not such a good idea yet?

If they are postponing the retirements of the behemoth due to new aircraft delivery delays then why are they receiving new 787-10s as new lease of life for partially replacing the a380s? Boeing will have new ones coming out of factory over this year which they will be able to deliver.

KAL is taking delivery of 787-10s and A350-900s without having to wait, but KAL is waiting on the bigger A350-1000 and 777-9.

Why spend money on a plane that is to be retired. Especially on a D check. It might be expensive to operate but travellers as do I love it especially long haul for cabin space. Love to see both airlines comit keeping them in the air for a few more years.

Calm down .. they're trying to increase the resale value of their remaining fleet.. Only have 7 airframes left...3 have no chance of returning to service.. Already broken up.

Airbus should try and make another A380neo, high capacity aircraft are starting to have a market they just need to be efficient. it might be easier said that done, but after this aircraft we are left with the 777X which isnt even in production yet, but that is still less compared to the 380. The A380 is the most luxurious aircraft in the skies

Airbus axed the A380 for the same reason Boeing axed the 757: demand was low at the time of discontinuation and the engines that could make way for a more efficient re-engine was not ready yet

There are not large enough engines. Even two GE9X engines would not be enough.

BOEING FAILURE TO DELIVER? The question is Is Korean Air using this to push pressure on Boeing to "PAY FOR THIS" because of delays along with a total disbelief in the Delivery Slots that Boeing promised. This sounds like they have been "warned" by Boeing of further delivery delays BUT are not happy with the small compensation that Boeing is offering. They have NO ONE to sell them on to and "enhanced passenger comfort for 12 -18 months Max does not make sense. This suggest ONLY THAT BOEING IS HAVING ADDITIONAL DELAYS. that is in line with FAA statements which have made it clear BOEING HAS FAILED TO MAKE PROGRESS AS PROMISED - FAA VERY UNHAPPY!

sounds crazy, paying the massive cost of a D-check for an aircraft they are going to scrap?! The damn plane will be like new, after the check, fit to fly for at least another decade. With Airbus and Boeing jog-lammed....getting rid of the A380 is pretty daft.

You're right, not cheap to service an aircraft they intend to scrap. Lufthansa had D-AIMM in Manila last December. From December 1st to December 29th. As many as 100 technicians work on a D check apparently.

no. The standard 747-8 already had the roughly the same range. So why would more range help?

@ it would carry amount of passengers for a longer distances, plus I thought of my own fixations to make it a step up from the original, I increased the passenger capacity from 410 to 500 passengers that could really challenge the a380, I’ll explain more about my ideas if I get the chance to make a future video about them
