Ketchup. I use ketchup to clean silver jewellery. Cover it, leave it about 20 minutes. Wash with warm, mild soapy water, dry and buff gently with a soft cloth. Safer than most silver cleaners, as they actually strip the surface.

Good luck for having the large tray being sterling. I once found a 3 pound solid silver (tested higher than sterling) water jug for $7 in a thrift store. Other resellers passed it by as it looked like pewter unpolished. I did well

The one thing that usually gives away plate right away for me is when it has a bluish tinge. Sterling generally only has a black tarnish to it. YOu'll have to ask George about that if blue is a color that's an issue for you. All of the plate you have looks pretty basic or is otherwise too damaged to be worth anything. But never discount plated items. There is some high-value silver plate. It's usually very ornate and attractive. My favorite silver plate to find is art nouveau especially WMF figural pieces. The higher value items are usually the more ornate ones. Some other good silver plate names to find especially the older and more ornate pieces are Gorham, Tiffany, and Christofle. I just usually look up anything ornate or really visually interesting and different.

Pure sterling is lighter Plated which your have, is heavier because its base is copper or brass. Sterling is also softer and wouldn't make a good tray, it would bend.

Hey Jeremy how'd you like to make this old Jarhead today, Andre restorage love in a special way. My grandson Michael loves trains dinosaurs and sharks, but mostly he loves trains. I watch the episode of all of the unboxing that you did with George George, and George I'm asking a huge favor of you, would you be willing to part with a set of Lionel trains and send them to me at my address here in Lenoir City Tennessee. So I can give it to my grandson for Christmas and make sure it's in working order. My grandson has autism I'm asking a big favor of you my friend. I want to see his eyes light up, like I did when I was a child, and when my grandfather brought me so many train tracks and trains to run through the entire house. I will attach this message, in an email to you as I do have your email address. You'd make my grandsons day if you could do this. Respectfully one of your best followers on KZbin Glenn Ewell

The little symbols are called "Hallmarks". You need a guide that tells what they mean. A simple way, in case you've forgotten, to distinguish plate from solid silver is to use a magnet. Won't stick to silver.
@tangomoggy
@tangomoggy 4 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, magnets will not stick to copper either...and more often than not, copper is used as a base metal in plated items. Either that or brass. It tends to be only iron based substances that are magnetic...

13:07 The yellow bus reminds me of the old RTA buses that ran in Dayton, Ohio where I grew up. They had those long "arms" on the back that were connected to wires that ran them on electricity. Boy, if one of those buses hit a bump too hard, the arm would pop off, stop the bus and cause a bid mess. Brings back memories. Thanks for the video! 😁✌

I recommend getting all of the trays checked to make sure none are 'coin silver', much more valuable than just sterling. But, that said, they all looked like plated to me...not that valuable. My mother was a collector of silver coins, trays, old jewelry, tea sets, knives/forks/spoons, etc. We had a TON of it to go through and get priced/valued after she died. None of it was very valuable except one very old 'coin silver' serving tray she had and one set of solid silver cutlery and one set that was stainless on the parts you put in your mouth, but the handles were solid silver and very ornate. Looks like a really good unit.

You have to look up those symbols on the bottom of the items and the country of origin and what each imprint means. "E" on that English piece does NOT necessarily mean "electroplate" they used letters for years example: a=1900 b=1901 A=1800 B=1801 etc. Lions head means was made in London. There are many times makers marks as well. That TEA SET LOOKS LIKE STRAIGHT ANTIQUE SILVER to me but badly tarnished. Could be plated, but the style could be back to 1700 or 1800s easily, BEFORE they used marks. You need to find a good precious metals marks WEBSITE. You should be able to look up most marks for free. Hope that helps you.

Clean the silver do not polish. Polishing eliminates the patina. After you get an expert opinion whether any of it could be old enough to be an antique, then decide if it is worth polishing. I am thinking more on the last silver tray you showed us. If that one is solid silver and old enough to be an antique, the patina increases its value.

Ok you two young'ens! A lot of people in the age group of the owner would refer to silver plate as "honey, pack up the sterling". Most things were silver plate. Now for my grandparents in the 1920's....they would get gifts of solid sterling but also received some plated silver. I saw maybe one piece in that box that may not be plated.
