I really think that it is a great rod for the money. The new version is even better (I have been fishing it for the last week and think it is more sensitive and is also 10'4" long and has a fighting butt). So if you get one now, you will be getting the newer model. I will be posting a review of the new model shortly.

@@richardboesel Hi Richard - Thank you for the great videos and review of the rods. Very good stuff, and feels legit and that we can trust you. I'm curious how you feel about the MaxCatch reel? I just lucked upon the moonshine rod last night and bought one online the 10'4" 2wt; so excited to fish it soon! Not sure which reel I'm going to pair with it yet. You've got a larger one on there right? To balance the length. Is it the max catch 7/8? Thank you!

@@jabear24 The Maxcatch Avid 7/8 balances the rod perfectly. The reel is great for the price. Just don't drop it on a rock or garage floor. ( I bent my spool dropping it onto cement and had to unbend it in my vice at home - still works but not bullet proof). Also, it is a "open cage" reel and I recently replaced it with a classic closed "Full Cage" reel. (See review on Teton reel on my site). This prevents the thin micro-leader from getting between the spool and the frame on the reel. I lost a few fish because of this. Only happened once with the Maxcatch reel but happened a few times with a Picsifun reel I had before. IF you are not clumsy and are not rough on your stuff like I am, the Maxcatch reel will serve you well however and I like the way it looks. (a reel that is 5.6 oz empty is about right for the rod).

I am wondering the same thing. T&T Contact and Sage ESN seem to be the glamour rods in euro nymphing. How is the recovery rate on the Epiphany? My Cortland nymph rod seems to take longer to stop wobbling.

The Sage ESN is probably the gold standard, but the price is to high for me. If you have the $$ to spend--then go for it. If you prefer to catch as many fish and not have to baby your equipment -then consider a cheaper rod. I have the ECHO Shadow X which I think is a great rod but is also twice the cost and really I can't tell that much difference. The new Model Epiphany 2 wt is even better, I have been fishing it the last week. The recovery is fine and accuracy is good. I haven't fished the Orvis Recon so I can't comment, but I know they have a great following. I think that it is more important that you have proper technique and understanding then what rod you have.

@@richardboesel This makes a lot of sense. I have a Hardy Zenith 10-ft 3-wt and really like it for nymphing, but I do not think it has the soft-tip that is typical of an euro nymphing rod. According to the Moonshine website, their redesigned 2- and 3-wts are both sold out. I guess the word is getting around. In any event, thanks so much for taking the time to respond! Best.

I think the Hardy blank for that rod was really designed for overhead - single hand casting (ie, drys and nymph rigs) and not really for Euronymphing. I have a similar 10 ft 4 wt that I tried for Euronymphing and it works--OK but it really doesn't flip the flies like I like and is really stiff at the tip (Fast action). This is not what you want for euronymphing. A really soft tip will allow accurate "flip and tuck" casts and more importantly, is more sensitive to light strikes (visually when watching the indicator section) and the fish don't feel you as quickly and hold on a little longer. So get a dedicated euronymph rod--it makes a difference. (ie--a cheaper euronymph rod is better then an expensive name brand rod that is not made specifically for euronymphing.)

@@richardboesel Thanks Richard. I think I know exactly what you mean about the soft tip being more communicative of light strikes, visually. I will definitely follow up on getting an euro nymphing rod.
