I don’t know if this is ancient history but the richness of the questing and storylines and rewards in legion order halls, artifact quests and class quests was amazing. The fact that you couldn’t even do it all there was so much just made the world feel alive and real - I really regret just running a ton of M+ and didn’t appreciate it enough. Maybe they could use legion as a model.

I would prefer they did the order hall structure every expansion. we don't need the borrowed power or the mission table, but the stories, quests and just having a "Class headquarters" is a true warcraft experience, and it feels wrong when it's missing -- the classic era worked this way too, in a way, with its trainers and class quests

While I hate the idea of "not having levels", it works quite well in GW2. Instead, you have like a list of new skills that you need to unlock by gaining exp through various expansion activities. Though they're not combat skills but rather open world skills such as getting better at gliding, better handling your mounts, ability to decipher ancient language and open some magic chests, you learn how to use jumping mushrooms etc. But it still feels like you're progressing your character and making it better. I hate that moment in an RPG when I reach a level cap and there's not much more I can do with my character and all that's left is the story alone.

I don’t mind shorter campaigns however I liked them cause I knew what story I really NEED to do in order to understand what’s happening. I play both for the lore and the gameplay though. I really enjoyed the Suramar questline for example, my only concern was the massive timegating. I knew why it was done, but still. Also, why we need to wait for LFR to be opened for weeks?! It doesn’t give such a gear advantage anyways since we don’t have Titanforging.
@michaelpettersson4919

Maybe have campaigns with breaks? Playing Morrowind the first campaign quest essentially has you seek out a contact in another town. Said contact essentially tells you to go out adventuring until you feel ready to continue the campaign. No pressure whatsoever there.

I view LFR as raider training grounds. If you can get good at LFR's you can step up to normal raiding. LFR's helped me progress in WoW to become a raider, way back when. I don't believe there is even one unselfish reason for people to oppose LFR opening when it's corresponding normal raids open.

I'm an AotC raider, I run M+ up to the point where I'm getting Mythic track gear in my vault. I PvP on the side, though nothing major. And for me, story is Paramount. I read quests. I'm invested enough in the lore that I own all the Chronicles, a good percentage of the novels. I'm actually excited for this because for at least the last 2 or 3 xpacs, the side quests have often been superior, story-wise. I dunno how Rare we are, but those of us who try to do a little bit of everything in this game do exist.

To be honest, the mandatory story makes things feel like a chore only because it’s SO long. I will now do side quests because I won’t be worn out of the storyline. The last 2 expansions I did zero side quests because I had to spend so much time doing the main story. This really makes me want to actually do some side quests and actually read them!

Honestly this sounds more like questing in Wrath of the Lich King. Back then we didn't really have quests that designated the main story quest line. The main story revealed itself through the quests themselves and was left much more to the interpretation of the player. I would argue that out of the two choices of starting zones Borean Tundra was the main story line culminating in the quests where you are helping Thassarian and Howling Fjord was the side story. The Blue Dragon flight stuff, the Valkyr, the Tuskar, Scholozar basin, the Wolf Cult and Ulduar were all secondary story line stuff for example, and anything that was about advancing on the Icecrown and fighting the Scourge was main story. But back then the quest log didn't tell us which quests and quest chains were main story.

This works for me because I don't like to play my characters as the champion of the entire world who has participated in every event. I like to play my Draenei Shaman as an agent of the Earthen Ring and my Forsaken Warrior as a vengeful hunter of the Scarlet Crusade. I focus on zones and story lines for each alt, often leaving some in certain expansions indefinitely. Often, I will only do quests and objectives that involved this or that faction/rep/renown. So I like not HAVING TO do much main campaign on everyone.

I feel like if they want to have so many side questions and things like that great. Have a way for the player to turn their XP on and off easily from the interface. Because for one when you over level an area, it makes doing the quest very trivial, which gets boring very fast. For two when you are at max level, you are not going to be getting amazing gear from questing. I feel like it would be really cool if I could say to myself OK the first zone in the new expansion I’m going to take it all the way from level 70-73 then I’m going to finish the zone and once all the quests are complete I moved to the next one and go from 73 to 75 Then 75-78, 78-80. Whatever. but I am almost positive that if you do every single quest in the first zone that you possibly can, you will be much higher than that. in dragon flight I was level 66 by the time I finished the first zone on my initial character.

I get tired of the main story often, especially repeating them. I played in MoP & WoD where you could discover questlines after questlines, and had hours of content to work through, so I am happy to know that they are introducing more ways to learn about the people, the culture, the world and the potential hints for future content through more side quests. I also love it when they tie unique rewards to it, especially if its a useful toy or cosmetic for roleplayers.

I used to play WoW because they had interesting and compelling characters. But ever since they did Sylvanas (my fav character) and Arthas dirty, i stopped caring. I only play WoW to do M+ now. But as someone who does still appreciate good storytelling, i think this looks to be a very very good approach to make a lot of different playstyles in WoW happy. People who don't care about story can get to their endgame quick without a bunch of bullshit. And lore / story focused players get to enjoy the adventure of learning the lore via questlines that will inevitably help building bonds with characters. Let's hope they are able to make good stories and compelling characters!

I sympathize with the decision in all honesty. Being a developer, let alone a quest designer or narrative lead, is a thankless occupation no matter the game in question. With wow, I can only imagine how internal pressures & public criticisms weigh in on fundamental decisions. Like, honestly, what positives are there for producing this story-bound content? Take for instance the recent chronicle mishap. Yes, there were inconsistencies in the text published, but even if there wasn’t, what praise would be there for the producers & writers of that book? I don’t feel like they’re producing the chronicle books for solely sale #’s, with the associated artwork & manufacturing quality of the books, it genuinely feels like a labor of care. Maybe my love for wow lore & storytelling is closing my judgement, feel free to critique my stance on the topic, but overall, it’s seems irrefutable that they’re in a tough position as content creators. With all my heart, I feel for the devs. ❤ Here’s hoping we get a wonderful story from the world soul saga. 🤞🏼 Peace.

One quest change I would absolutely Love would be the additional marker of .. say a Pink Ribbon on the quest marker to indicate a LGBTQIA+2 quest for quests like oh .. helping Gay Centaurs get marries or Gay Dragonkin gift each other presents ... That way the people who do want to do them can more easily find them AND the people who do NOT want to do them can more easily Avoid them.

Also instead of levels there should be a paragon system like in diablo just to enhance some of your heroic talents. Although there will be some people who would cry about questing to unlock dungeons and raids.... Players will never be happy

For me it comes down to quantity, not quality. Yes you heard that right. I want to feel like a story is actually unfolding in front of me about a character be then ally or enemy, not just some 15 minute scenario to give the paint by numbers explanation. If we can stop giving those short blips of stories I'm ready and willing to give it a try. That said, there is a catch. As far as side quest vs main quest goes, it depends on what you call a main quest. I like quests that involve the big bad at a cornerstone level to what is going on. Following in the wake of their actions and tending to the damage they brought is good world building, so if that gets cut because it's "main quest" territory that's what I'm nervous will get lost in the shuffle.

WoW needs a whole rework on their story they're trying to tell to new players, rather than just "questing updates." As a new player you have absolutely no clue what the fuck is going on. The nutshell experience: Level 1: "Lok'tar Ogar, Warrior! We welcome you to the Horde! Our leader is Grommash Hellscream!" Level 10: "Queen Sylvanas is requesting her champion in Orgrimmar, do not let her wait - Zandalar ...!" Level 11: "Thank you Hero of Azeroth, for helping us through Draenor, onward to victory!" Level 20: "Maw Walker, nobody ever escaped the Shadow Lands!!" Level 21: "Taz'dingo mon, welcome to Zandalar! Now get the fuck off and grind dungeons!" Level 40: "Ahhh, greetings Champion of the Horde, welcome to KUL'TIRAS! You know the drill, I marked the dungeons on your map." Level 50: "Grind baby, grind baby, but not the leveling kind, I mean like playing WoW online, and then a rogue gets you from behind." Level 60: "Dragons, ah yes, dragons."

That's one of the things I've always disliked about the expansions - something happens at the start and then moves at a snail's pace though out the whole expansion and at the end we get some vague idea of what's really going on and we get introduced to a new expansion, in which things are not much different. While I don't mind having side quests, I really don't pay too much attention on their story. If Blizzard is going to make the main story line even shorter, then for me that's not a good thing at all.

I play for both the story and the gameplay. After playing WC3 I wanted to explore that world to take peek and all the little nooks and crannies. The reason sometimes I am not super into the story and wow is because they do such a shitty job telling stories. They do great jobs at hinting at a story or showing a little peak of the lore. Ambiguity and mystery blizzard is S tier. telling engaging stories in a meaningful way while questing and leveling up they are D tier. BFA I went into the expansion thinking we were going to have a faction war with Azerite being the main catalyst. Then the story went all over the place.

PvPers aren't the only ones who ruined it, end-gamers aka Raiders, etc also ruined what i would call the ''spirit'' of the MMORPG. Leveling is treated as insignificant, something to push through to get to the ''good'' stuff...and that's a huge issue. Blizzard wants to cater to various audiences, yet players like myself who want leveling to matter, to have my character grow with the world and it's story - have nothing to do in the game.

I enjoy the story but I am not going to read through excessive amounts of quest text to sift it out when I can just watch youtube videos that do a better job of telling the story. If Blizzard ever reworked the format of questing to have less text and more dialog boxes or voice acting then I would pay attention to it. I would really love a story mode where they trimmed down the word count and let you play through the entire thing from classic to TWW. As for the leveling, after your first max level character they could do a smart rework of Islands, MoP Senarios, Torghast or even a full profession route where you do thematic quests centered around your chosen professions to make you feel like a crafter/gatherer. They could also add a more combat focused path that involves you actually learning how to play your spec with challenges that force you to be better at the game with some kind of unique reward at the end for your efforts.

As someone who tends to avoid MSQ until all the sidequests are done, TWW feels huge. You barely even touch the 4th zone before 70. I levelled a couple times in alpha/beta and both times it felt like there was way more then you needed to get max level, especially if you delve. Personally I wish more players played for "everything", Sure everyone has a favorite or specialty, but when you take in the whole game, you learn things, make gold, make friends and overall improve your general wow skill.. When you're myopic focus on one tiny slice of the game, you only get the worst of the game.

Τhey change their philosophy because the majority of the players don't care about the lore. They want to lvlup fast and start the endgame content, so Blizz decide to short the campaign and for those who like the lore they add side/local quests, Blizz is trying to make everyone happy! For me I would love to lvlup my main and enjoy the lore of the new expansion, but for alts it'll be nice if there was a way to skip lvling with one click, for example with alts you could have a choice from an NPC to either lvling through questing or skip it and be instant max level, in order start the endgame content.

Edit: made it towards the end of the video. I'm mainly a progression raider who consumes content creator lore. I hate quests for leveling. I don't mind it for rep or attunement. I play MMOs for almost everything. There are definitely lower tiers of things that interest me. Like collectables or full achievement points. Though I also am not currently M+ or AOTC player. I'm not even a WoW player at the moment. Though to me it was always important to me to enjoy the story and understand the story. To enjoy progression raiding, I want to know why the fuck this person keeps killing me. Other than prestige and loot I want to know why I'm grinding to kill said person. I also only play MMOs for raiding. If I don't have time or health, then I'm not usually subbed or playing. Though at the same time, I think skippable dialog, lack of fetching quests, not being forced into escort missions is also important. Sometimes I am doing things to get them done. I'll go back and enjoy the story later. Which is exactly what I do with from software games, completion first. Story after. So I may be an enigma from the average. On this note as well though, despite being an elitist cuck. Solo raids and locking story being inaccessible to players behind raids isnt cool either. I only gatekeep loot and aesthetics from said loot.

Nothing is actually stopping WoW from telling the story the exact same way as FF14. If the story is superb, then players will watch and not skip …like they do now.

Story/lore is #2, just behind exploring the world itself.

Sounds good overall, except for the fact they keep making lvling faster and by extension even more worthless, along with 90%+ of the core game. Like, why force it instead of making it optional for those who want it, why is the game always designed entirely for end-gamers, i'm sick of it. For me, the most important part of an RPG is slower, gradual leveling and character growth, without it i have no reason to play, no satisfaction, no character feel - crucial RPG aspects. There is no satisfaction in end-game except raids/dungeons for those who care, so why force players like myself rush to it when i couldn't give two f*cks about it. This is the kind of flawed Blizzard's mentality ill never understand, they want to cater to a various audiences...but keep catering to only one. Expansion...after...expansion, and nothing changes. All because they would rather make a new raid tier instead of a decent leveling experience. Incompetence at it's finest.

I came in from warcraft 3 so yeah the story is important but it's not world of warcraft anymore its word of feelings its definitely lost its edge its just not cool to me anymore and the story is just so convoluted now wow has been catering to the sweaties and gutted the leveling experience numbers don't feel good until max level and gear isn't as exciting as in classic its less impactful you never keep gear for very long making it unimportant

tbh I think WoW has become it's own thing and the main reason the story sucks is it has strayed so far from the story that made the lore what people liked. IE WC3 and FT I will always go back to, blizzard needs a single player lore game to invest people in characters, because inan MMO setting people want to keep up with others around them and skip past stuff especially when it involves reading quest text lol. and even more so when 60% of the lore is from random shit outside of the game.

Turn WoW leveling into a sandbox. World questing, world eventing, raiding, dungeoning, pvping, side questing, campaing questing all from level 1, and let our brains explode for not knowing what path take to level up.

I play for the story. However, the story as is with “MuH champion” fighting a new big bad from a new island every expansion is boring af at this point. The world needs to settle and focus on some intra-racial politics for a bit before again pitting various races / factions against each other. If they took a Game of Thrones / A Song of Ice and Fire approach, it would bring the game to the place where it needs to be. I want to be a Human Paladin / Priest / Mage erc... rebuilding the ravaged Kingdom of Lordaeron, maybe seeing the foundation of a new Crusader State in the Plaguelands after taking part in the victory over the Scourge, etc... Every race needs to have its own story again. This singular “muh champion” doesn’t work.

Good Idea If they create Side Quests with deep Lore and it Matters somehow. Here and there. Greetings to south africa.

Their story is already trash so I don't expect much story from them anymore they haven't cared about their own story for years this just tells me less story then ever before and less cutscenes telling story this is just lazy unless they have cutscenes on side story's as well. Looks like FF14 will still be the god of story telling.

Side quests are garbage in wow there's not a single one that's had a lasting mark on me that I remember it. Also the only real narrative device Blizzard had that works in WoW is the main campaign. I'd much rather they prune the endless, and useless, side quests that don't amount to 💩in the long term when considering where the main narrative is headed. Lastly, conveying the lore of the world and the main story doesn't have to be a mutually exclusive activity. That being said, I realize that since Blizzard is shit at both I can see why you think that side quests can be an avenue for pushing out the lore of the world in order to flesh it out.
