HUGE CLOSE-UP WILDFIRE! Split Airport!

On the second of July, a wildfire engulfed Split airport in smoke which caused a number of delayed landings and takeoffs. The weather was of no help due to high winds and lightning strikes, and rain which wasn't falling on the wildfire at first. The firefighters were on the scene shortly after the start of the fire but it went out of control due to high winds which caused material damage on some houses. There were also 4 Canadair CL-415s of the Croatian Air Force fighting the fires.

Actually not in production at this moment. Viking is more a source of spares. I understand in time they want to put them into production again, along with the Buffalo. They will need to invest into more production capability 1st.

Watch closely and ull see powerlines, so the had to be on safe distance from it. It depends on terrain a big deal. Pilots, all of them, have "balls" for steep dive, but sometimes it is to risky.

Cosmo I hope they get better for the Croatian flight crews too. I was in your beautiful country 2 weeks ago & stayed two nights near Zadar. Next time I'd like to squeeze in a visit if possible. I flew 215/415 & other types for 34 years. I retired completely 5 years ago after 43 years working as a pilot.

It depends on the size of the fire and the terrain. CLs are waaaay more agile, more maneuverable, able to corner in tight terrain, maintain stability... 747 is much more difficult to maneuver, but holds more water in one drop... so, hills, gorges, canyons.. CL wins every time... Flat plains... 747 feels like home... Although, I don't believe a 747 can scoop water.... it get's filled up at the point of takeoff...

1 aircraft is wasting his load every time because he releases way too high. You have to be at treetop level for greatest effect. When you see the water hang in the air its an ineffective load.
