Another great video. Congrats on finding that patch. Just interested in how you actually pick an area to detect in? I generally do loads of research on GeoVic, Tully and Stones maps etc. I then look at old diggings and work back from there but even though I do generally get gold every trip, its normally 2 or 3 bits and never in a patch. Any tips?
@JayGoldNuggets8 жыл бұрын
Gday Pat, i pretty much do what you do. In fact, youre probably more organised then i am, I mostly just wonder around and hope for the best.I reckon a lot my finds are just luck but i do put a fair bit of time into it. I think what gets me most of my gold is i move a lot of dead branches an bushes etc. When i find a piece, i then spend days looking in the surroundings. Sorry i cant be more definitive. I think the best thing to do to maximise your yields is just hard yakka and putting the time in. With regards to not finding a patch, id say that someone had been there before you/us and the GPZ is getting what the older machines have missed. That happens to me a lot, just getting the scraps. Just remember where they are and hit them up again with the new coils or newer tech. Good luck. JG
@oceanblue648 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply JG. Glad to see I am not too far off the mark. I can only get up to the GT once a week, generally on a Saturday and after driving for a few hrs I find it hard to spend a lot of time in an area that doesn't appear to be productive. If you ever see a white Mercedes Vito van (with Central Appliance Service written on the side) in the middle of the bush, be sure to drop over and say gidday.
@JayGoldNuggets8 жыл бұрын
No probs Pat. If i see the Vito ill def come over for a beer. Good luck mate and keep me posted if you get a nice one.
@stanbattle4027 жыл бұрын
Hi there JG, you were careful not to strike that one with the pick so will you be selling that nugget as a piece of jewelry? Is it worth more as an unblemished nugget (in that area) than its weight in 24 carat refined gold? I really appreciate your no BS style of video making.
@JayGoldNuggets7 жыл бұрын
Gday Stan, All the big nuggets are better off being sold as a complete nugget, rather then melting it down. You can usually get a 10% premium on bigger stuff, and the bigger the gold, the more premium you get. The nuggets are about 23k, usually have a bit of silver and copper and some other minerals in them. I try and keep the vids real, about gold and nothing else... noting worse then someone rotting on about garbage and the junk metal they find along the way. Cheers, JG

is there a reason why you do not take the dirt around where you find these nuggets and pan it out?
@JayGoldNuggets8 жыл бұрын
There is no water nearby so id have to cart it around which would very difficult when detecting, plus we cant use machinery to dig so it would get very laborious for potentially little yield. It would defiantly be feasible in some situations but not something i really consider as i just like digging up big nuggets... Its also a time issue.... if i spend a few hours panning for a few grams of gold dust, i could probably find more with the detector.

I think It has lot's to do with mineralization, old VLF detectors used to go off a lot in higly mineralized ground and it was fustrating, today PI detectors are much better at ground cancelling.

Good video! Today's gold hunting metal detector enthusiast needs to become a "real" prospector and not just travel to the already known sites that have been picked over by 1000's of other metal detector operators. Well, a book has been published recently that has received the highest ratings possible from gold prospecting experts around the country. Examples of some of the gold prospecting expert's comments: "The author amassed a cornucopia of gold prospecting information that can serve as a bible for first time weekend enthusiasts as well as many long time recreational gold prospectors.", "It is written in terms that is easy for anyone to understand and contains an enormous amount of information that should be useful to anyone looking to better their knowledge of prospecting or metal detecting.", "FINALLY, I am really happy to see that someone has put so much information under one cover. I have, probably, most of the information in the book already but it is scattered through many studies, research papers, government documents, and other books (the accuracy of which sometimes is questionable). That is why I can foresee this book becoming THE GOLD PROSPECTORS BIBLE.", "Finally someone has written a genuinely useful book that tells readers so much more than the usual gold prospecting books do. Kudos to Tim Rapp for raising the bar in the genre and compiling a great resource that people can read and re-read again and again.". Note: At a time when gold prospecting books sometimes are priced at $60 and $70 and contain little more than instructions on panning and sluicing, this book is a veritable BIBLE of gold prospecting information and is available from Amazon.com for less than $10 for the Kindle, and less than $15 in a high quality PDF format from the author's website: www.theessentialintroductionfornewgoldprospectors.com/? Do your prospecting friends a favor and let them know about this resource!

Well done on a great day out! Could you suggest some settings? Mainly sensitivity, threshold and smoothing. Do you run with audio smoothing on or off and if so- low or high? cheers Garry
@JayGoldNuggets8 жыл бұрын
Gday Gary, my settings depend on the day, ground and EM. If the ground is hot i run a lower in the vicinity of 10-12, higher if the ground can handle it. Threshold is always around 23. Smoothing for me is a remedy for EMI, if there is a lot of EMI i run smoothing on LOW. I never use HIGH smoothing though, id rather back off the sensitivity. I hope this helps. Cheers. JG.

@JayGoldNuggets8 жыл бұрын
Gday Snowwie, this vid and all my others are just out in the state forrest and you can come and go as you please. But you do need a miners right which costs about $90 for 10 years..
@Snowwie888 жыл бұрын
That's giving you a lot or freedom. Do you pick your choice of location in the Forrest randomly or do you do research before you starting looking with the detector? Like I said before, it's a pity we don't have such area's over here in The Netherlands. I would love to do this as a hobby. I think about the excitement you have each time you nearly got a nugget. Every time it could be a big one. And I mean I real big one, because there have been nuggets found which are least a few kilograms. And what do you have to loose? Nothing. It's a free thrill ride. How often do you go to these state parks to look for gold? Do you always go alone?
@JayGoldNuggets8 жыл бұрын
I usually just go to the gold fields and try and area. If i dont find a piece within a few hours i move to another spot and try my luck. It really is just using a bit ok knowledge and hoping for the best. I try and go once a week, but lately its been raining and I've hat a lot of work, so I've not been out as much as id like. I always go alone. Sometimes my dad tags along but id prefer to be by myself. All the best. JG

Do you need a claim to use a detector in australia?
@GR196117 жыл бұрын
Lachlan Thistlethwaite No you don't but you do need a miners right and you must get permission to detect on private land. I would recommend that you contact a prospecting shop and hire a detector for a week and see how you like the hobby before committing to the best detector that you can afford. Good luck.

It's called alluvial gold and Australia's Golden Triangle has produced millions of tonnes of it over the past 160 years, mate! That's exactly how it was discovered by the old time miners in the Victorian gold rush of the mid to late 1800's.

I think it was staged. An ounce of gold metal detecting in a day? You never know what they're selling anymore. Im surprised they dont talk about his terminally ill son that needs this gold, to buy a kidney to save his life. LOL

Terence Rea This is not acting terence,I have done this for years and I tell you ,it was a blast when I hit 97 nuggets in one week. If you ever get a chance to hire a decent detector and hit victoria do it at least once.
