The milk lasts longer because its ultra pasteurized. As a household of two I only buy ultra pasteurized milk, regular milk would always spoil before I could use it all. It does cost more than regular milk though, but not when you consider having to buy more because the older milk spoiled.
@cookshackcuisinista
@cookshackcuisinista 2 жыл бұрын
Regular milk can be removed from the plastic container before the best before date and put into clean glass jars and put into the back of the fridge and you'll get an extra 3 weeks of deliciousness minimum! I have been doing this for years. If it happens to spoil, this makes the best biscuits, sour milk gingerbread, chocolate cake....etc

I just freeze it when I buy it and defrost it as we need it. But I don't live in the USA, so maybe our milk processing is different 🤷. We also don't have such big containers. Everything is in a 1 litre container.

My favourite line was when you said ‘I don’t need milk, but for this price, I needed milk’. It’s such a great concept to stock up when it’s on sale, so when you need it, it’s not full price. Feeling the price hikes in NZ. Summer veggies were double the price, frozen blueberries have gone up a third......

This video was nice. I’ve learned that with inflation going on, I need to organize my food a LOT and be very mindful of prices and how many ways can I use One meat source. I recently printed out a “freezer inventory list” and it helps a lot! I love It! With 2 chest freezers in the basement, it’s easy for items to fall to the bottom and get lost! I just Hang up the list on the freezer and check off as we go. I also now think about : ex- I bought A pack of chicken breasts. I can make chicken Alfredo, chicken noodle soup, casseroles, chicken stir fry, chicken enchiladas( insert Forest Gump scene 😆). But seriously, that’s what I do And it helps!

My Kroger stopped discounting the salad kits and other prepared produce items on the day I usually go grocery shopping and it has made be very sad. I need to figure out which day they are doing it on now. Gah! But, to cheer me up, I scored big time in the shelf-stable clearance section at my Kroger. They had multiple carts filled with discounted Chunky Campbell's soups. Say what?! Normal price for each can is usually around $3 - - - I paid only 90 cents for each can!!! WHAT?! Let's just say - I stocked up! Thank you for being my inspiration for hunting down those clearance items! :)

Dont know if someone answered, but the cartons of milk have a longer expiration date because they are Ultra-Pastrurized, which means its just at a higher temp, also its not exposed to light, which can affect the quality of milk. Work for a dairy company, as a lab tech, thats how I know.

If you set aside a bit of your grocery budget, you can buy that sale chicken and clearance naan. You may have to freeze it since it's close to expiration sometimes, so you can get to it eventually. But, buy it when you can.

Christine, I love your videos! You always have great recipes, tips etc. I’ve got a funny story. I was watching one of your videos & you said “Alex shuffle songs by Charlotte “… can’t remember the last name. Anyway, I was in our bedroom resting & the door to our master bathroom was open & we have an echo dot in there. Next thing I know it’s playing songs by Charlotte … I was so surprised & it was pretty funny. I thought you might get a laugh about it!!

LOVE catching the ground bison on clearance. Better for you than ground turkey yet as close to ground beef in taste as you’re gonna get. Don’t just use it for chili!! My family loves bison burgers and I’ve done a shepherds pie variation with ground bison and mashed sweet potatoes.

Thanks to your videos I recently figured out that the Entenmann's bakery outlet near my house also carries the bread I've been buying for 3.99/loaf (up from 3.79) at a price of 3 for 4.00!! Do you do any weekly shopping for things like fresh produce or things you may run out of?

I wish my Kroger store (Bakers here in NE) had good clearance like yours! I live close to 2 of them and they RARELY have much for clearance, except highly over priced vitamins, supplements and kitchenware. I’ve tried going around 8am, 10am noon and even at 9pm to see if they were marking down for the next day!

On the organic milk... it will last WAY beyond the expiration date. I kid you not I just finished a carton that expired on December 10th. I mean I wouldn't drink it but I would cook with it and smell it before I did and it was fine - not sour in any way. I kept waiting for it to just die and it never did. I had originally bought it to make yogurt (I use whole organic) and never made it so I just cooked with it. It's always lasted way beyond the expiration date, but this was the farthest I've ever pushed it and it was totally fine!
