Yams and sweet potatoes as names are used interchangeably in Canada/USA. Yams are actually dry, starchy tubers not related to sweet potatoes at all. Sweet potatoes are called yams to differ the orange from the paler types, but they're not the same.

Here in the US they're called Asian Pears. Also Yams and Sweet Potatoes aren't exactly the same but they're close enough. They taste almost the same so there's no big difference between the two

Yams and Sweet potatoes are different in terms of sweetness but they're relatively the same. Also they're called Asian Pears. They more like Watery Apples than Pears really. The wateriness of the Asian Pears is somewhat like Watermelon. =W=
