The really big halibut are the breeders...fish out the breeders and there will not be any more halibut.

This fish was not actually caught so you can rest at ease. The commercial fleet takes the largest share of the biomass out of the Gulf of Alaska. Most of the sport fleet does not have access to the majority of the Gulf as well. Halibut spawn off the continental shelf and their larva move into the plankton column where they are distributed into the coastal waters of the Gulf...Large halibut do produce much more when they spawn, but the gulf of Alaska is strictly regulated as well as largely inaccessible and vast. The halibut here in alaska are maintaining a healthy population even with some retention of large fish.

I'll never understand why some people insist on showcasing their ignorance.....The official answer from the International Pacific Halibut Commission on its "frequently asked questions" page of its website says, "IPHC biologists see no benefit to preserving the largest females from a conservation standpoint."
