I love that you all made the addition thinking about multi-generational homes. We bought our forever home with the same in mind. My mother in law will never move in on her own accord but we have the room if needed, same with our kids when they become adults. I believe whole heartedly that family takes care of family and thankfully we have been blessed enough to be able to purchase a home that set us up for that if needed. Good luck with all the addition work, and yes I would hire a lawyer on the hallway issue. Merry Christmas to my favorite KZbinr. ❤️

Yes. I feel the same way. The world is so crazy and the prices are insane. I want my kids to always know they have a place with us and their families too if they need it. And multigenerational homes were a thing in America too for a long time but with certain changes in our culture over time it's less common. But the addition is beautiful!

But what if your child almost an adult 17 turned 18 busted a million huge holes in his bedroom walls along with a lot of other holes in the hallways and damaged brand new kitchen cabinet doors because he thought he was someone else, that is excuse I get. Then leaves the home two weeks after he turned 18 and says going out the door, "I don't have to listen to you and follow your rules anymore. " then he becomes homeless because his choices are off the wall. He is now 20, still messed up but getting help. Should I trust him? He even threatened to burn our home down. We adopted him at 7 and once 2020 hit his life got turned upside down. Our walls are still not fixed nor anything else. 😢

We let his older brother and his girlfriend move in with us twice and they were both respectful. First time was a bit harder because they were college students and they were used to living on their own and doing their things and it was 2021 so they had to move off campus but in 2023 they moved back because we offered while they waited for their new apartment to get done and it was actually wonderful to have them! ❤. I would do it again. Our daughter is 18 now and in her Senior year of hs. She doesn't trust her middle brother as well.

You guys are smart people so I'm sure you have contacted an attorney and have been working with a building inspector to make sure they do get done is done correctly. Fir the floor, you could put a transition of mosaic that coordinates with the current tile and then another flooring or the flooring you chose. You have way more patience than I do.

We had a problem with getting the same wood floor color as our dining room. We wanted to finally extend the floor, to match, throughout the great room... a rather large room, naturally. It's our own fault as we weren't able to do it right away, but waited until about a decade or longer later. We not be rich folk and we always had something more important come up. My style is simple, more rustic vibe. So, I found a flooring liquidator and after making a store visit we found a flooring that I hoped would match "pretty good"!? We took a sample home and I loved it. It wasn't the same. However, with a transition piece, it is perfect😊! I'm going for more of a wood look with porcelain tile in the kitchen (looks like barn wood) and hallway. Off the hallway we have the laundry room and and bathroom, which I eclectically found some old fashioned looking blue faded star pattern that I feel in LOVE with. It's so me!!! So, you don't have to matchy-match, using other materials can spice things up and be very eye-catching 😊❤. I DO FEEL YOUR PAIN! IT'LL ALL BE ALRIGHT 😊❤

Commenters are correct. Hire a litigator who fights insurance companies. Call Tragos for referral. He is in your backyard. Please use ikea for your closets. They will help design it and install it. Find a good human to install the wallpaper once the contractors are gone and you are living in the space. Hire a local cement guy for the patio. Get referrals from neighbors and bids. The chaos is shameful . ❤

The house looks beautiful! It's been such a long road for y'all, sending all the good vibes that it gets wrapped up soon. For the storage closets, I would recommend doing nothing, or the cheapest shelves possible...because it will all change once you've moved in to that area! Or at least in my experience it has. You actually use it for a while and then end up thinking, oh shoot, should've done this or that.... Move what you think should be in there in that closet, even if it's messy for 6 months, just live with that and then when you don't have a million other house decisions on your mind and you've lived with the space for a while, make the plans for those closets. Good luck!

Listen, I love that you are doing this for your family. I love that you don't believe your kids need to move out the second they turn 18. I love the European idea of a multi-generational home. I am one of six kids and growing up my parents always made it clear we had a place to come back to. My father has since passed away, but my mother still makes it clear all her children are welcome back home. My sister got married and her and her husband lived in my mothers finished basement until they were able to find a house. I just got married in June and she once again offered for us to live with her until we were able to find a home in this market. We loved the idea so much that we decided to build a multi-generational home so she could live with us instead. I will never understand why Americans think independence comes when you move out, it can very much still come when living with loved ones.

We add broomstick noodles into our broccoli cheese soup and it helps stretch the soup even further. We’re a family of 7 too (18 months, 4, 11, 13, and 16) so I like to get at least 2-3 good meals out of a pot. To pack more nutrients in there I’ll take the broccoli stems and cook them in a saucepan with the chicken stock until super soft, puree it until smooth, and then add it into the soup.

Oh, yeah, and be careful with that Travertine. It WILL stain, and it will chip if you drop something heavy on it. My cousin's was done probably around 10 years ago, and I'd never walk on it in high heels due to the damage that it has received. (Not that I'd walk in high heels anymore anyway, lol.) I think it has to be re-sealed every so many years. Just a thought.

Hi Kim, for the storage closets, don’t do drawers. Your doors aren’t the full width of the closet so the drawer width will be reduced and you’ll have wasted space on each side or worse, you won’t be able to open full width drawers. I guess you could put drawers on the sides but I don’t think you’d get them wide enough to be useful. I would just do nice shelves and you can always add to it in the future.

There could be easy solutions to your floor & door. Walking toward the addition, the load bearing wall is on the right. Is it load bearing on the left as well? Are you able to remove the trim and door frame on the left? Which would make the wall equal/seamless. With your tile choice, different colour, you can get someone from Legarri to mix up some epoxy with some tint in it that would match your original tile once its painted over the grey tile you bought. The best thing is, its waterproof and tough once cured. Then you just paint clear epoxy over your original tile so they both have the same sheen and protection, making the whole floor match.

I love how you organize what Christmas presents you have gotten, great idea! I also love picking out what I want for Christmas from my husband and I purchase it and he wraps it. He does the same thing. Our children have all growed up and have moved far far away and have their own families so I watch your videos and miss those days where my kids were little and Christmas was so much more special. We try and make our Christmas special though because we do have each other. I cant imagine how frustrating it would be for your addition to run into so many problems that could have been preventable. I will definitely try making both those soups, the broccoli one sounds supreme! Have a lovely week!

I was in Lakeland when it was 60° a couple weeks ago, probably when you recorded this vlog. We were visiting my brother in law and his family. They were depressed that it was so chilly, I was excited because I live for cooler/fall weather. I live in North Texas and we have all 4 seasons. My husband wants to move to Tampa so badly, but I don't know if I could handle not having the changing seasons.

Kim, I LOVE your content & videos. I’ve been following your channel for maybe 4 years or more now? We just built our own home too & when I say we built it we literally BUILT it! I say this with all due respect & its merely a speculation but just a suggestion with the two tiles, can you add a transition piece between them and have them lay the new tile in a different direction? So that everything still flows and looks similar but doesn’t look funny with the two different colors side by side? I know you mentioned you’ll put a runner over it but you could totally make it look like it’s on purpose with a few added details! Such as the transition? 😅 I can’t wait to see the end result!!
