It's always a glorious sight to behold, a pile of Atari ST machines! I've never owned any of the older models, just STE and MEGA STE and Falcon 030. Hard to choose a favourite.

One of favorite computer years ago...Atari ST. I sent mine to New York to have the RAM increased from 512K to 1 MB.....They did it by piggy-backing the RAM chips....I think my favorite game was Air Ball.

I've always been a big Atari fan but have never owned an ST model (largely because I didn't consider them to be related to my 8-bits). I may have to remedy that in the future.

This video could not have come at a better time; I just today “repaired” a 1040STFM with SM124 (somehow the monitor fixed itself). Looking forward to the repair/upgrade/rebuild videos. A few questions if you don’t mind; i see a few 070789 boards with 6 rom chips. Mine have only two. Could you explain (perhaps in your next video) what the difference/purpose is? I’m more of a commodore man myself and the Atari was a gift. Other question; all RAM upgrades i seem to find target the older revisions, do you have a video on a ram expansion for the 070789 board? See you in the next video ;)
@powerofvintage94423 ай бұрын
Those are easy questions :) 1 - 6 ROMs vs 2 ROMs. The 2 ROMs were a special size rom chip that really isn't available anymore. I would guess that it was a cost savings to use two larger chips instead of 6 smaller ones. The type of eproms that fit the 6 chip setup are found pretty easily today. Anyone can burn their own updated version of TOS for an easy OS upgrade. All you need to do is open one joined solder pad and close another "1mb rom" vs "256k rom" 2 - A great RAM upgrade for the C070789 board is found here: exxosforum.co.uk/atari/last/4mb/index.htm I have installed one in my personal "collection" 1040STF and it works wonderfully. The installation requires removing the existing RAM and some soldering skill, but I feel it's one of the best options available since it's pretty self contained.

@@powerofvintage9442 THANK YOU! :) (de)soldering is not an issue, but I'll probably spend more time unclogging my ZD-915 (I love that thing, but the clogging ...) I will go check out the upgrade module. Reg. the ROMs; a logical explanation. Sounds like something Jack Tramiel would do. (cost saving measures). Thanks for the reply and info.

What a great find! Amazing! I am still struggeling with a non-working wide button floppy drive (two sided) If you have a working spare I would be very interested. :)
@powerofvintage94423 ай бұрын
I need to see about finding a way to attach the wide button face place to a replacement drive. The original drives are just too likely to fail. I have one backup, but it is reserved for my PS3000 monitor if that drive fails.

Probably been asked a thousand times to you, but which ST is your favorite one, mate? :)
@powerofvintage94422 ай бұрын
Tough question. 1 - The 520ST (short body) is my favorite because it was the one I had growing up and brings back the most memories. 2 - Favorite design is the Mega STe (or TT). It’s not some boring box and has some really interesting style. 3 - Favorite for daily use / tinkering is the Falcon as it has the relatively easy CPU upgrade area with the best video out while still an ST at heart.

The long button drives are the first generation. They're Toshiba and really noisy. My experience is they fail after about 5 years of normal use. The short button drives are much more reliable. The one in the Falcon lasted like forever.
@powerofvintage94423 ай бұрын
That's been my experience as well. I've only had one fail small button drive and I have a large drawer fully filled of non functional large button drives that I have put hours into trying to repair (I am still trying, I promise).
@earx233 ай бұрын
@@powerofvintage9442 This level of persistence is commendable. I wouldn't know where things go wrong, exactly. They just go BWWWAAAAPP all the time ;-) If it's a belt drive, then maybe replace the belt? Sometimes I read stuff about cleaning, but I really wouldn't know.
@powerofvintage94423 ай бұрын
@@earx23 It isn't the belt or the drive. I've been able to get most of them working as "single sided" drives, but they are actually doublesided. I believe it's a read head alignment issue. Very fiddly.

Why did Atari make so many boards?....
