The2nd gen DSL is a 4 channel with footswitch & 2 EQ's for just around $1k, I don't see any other brand coming close to those features for that price. Not to mention the amount of Marshalls played by pros or the fact that in America a used Marshall is only about 20-30% cheaper than buying new. This company shake up is a result of stupid kids not knowing their dad's business. They went to college and it's all about branding and what not. It’s crazy to think of how old their flagship JVM line is. It’s been forever since they’ve made something new. I would love to see them make a mod collection. Most people’s favorite “Marshall” tones were José of Lee Jackson modified. Why don’t they just sell “Mod Collection” amps with those modifications integrated?
@zenlandzipline Жыл бұрын
That’s actually a great idea. Best idea I’ve read so far.
@erikthered9670 Жыл бұрын
Exactly, that's really what Marshall needs right now. The last thing they did was the code series, which is good for what it is, but the last big thing was the JVM. A new line based off of a Modded JCM800 or a Modded Plexi would be great. Give it a 100w version with some attenuation option, a lunchbox style version, and whatever in between. The important thing I think is to make it have more options than the traditional 1 channel 6 knob marshall but without going as crazy like they did with the JVM and Code series with like 20 different combinations which makes it seem more gimicky. But I think EVH is the guideline to take inspiration from, they've had the same amp for years and just continue to tweak it to cover more ground and give plenty of different buying options.
@fredmachine Жыл бұрын
Laney already did that in the GH100L and VH100R amps :D The GH100L was basically a budget JCM800 with an additional gain stage like the Lee Jackson mods, and some QoL improvements, like a very powerful fx loop that could be switched from serial to parallel, slave ins and outs, EL34/6L6 bias switches, and a resonance switch. And the VH100R was basically two of those preamps. Fantastic amps, but Laney is also not really innovating anymore. They're doing their old Supergroups, which is nice, and the Lion- and Ironheart series, but they're not really getting the recognition they deserve.
@ad1170 Жыл бұрын
The Kerry king sig was his JCM 800 amp that iirc had been modded By soldano + His MXR 10 EQ and noise gate put in it. You can never find that thing used and it’s probably one of the only Sig I saw used by other artists like Brendon Small and guys at Mastodon. Needless to say it was good. Marshall in recent years have become lax and let a lot of good artists slip from them, who usually go to Boutique amp makers like Victory and Friedmen who basically do modded marshals.
@TestarossaMusicista Жыл бұрын
@@ad1170 yeah! That and the YJM100. I think the YJM was their best version yet of a Plexi. I think it, like the KFK had the same problem: a great amp featuring a controversial artist. Ok, having been part of a few buyouts (and currently working for the largest DJ gear manufacturer, having survived a buyout), this is a good thing. They are now part of a brand umbrella that only has to care about one thing: keeping the brand hot. Think about it like a diner with Marvel. Marvel comics don’t make as much, but Disney funds the comic side to provide stories and characters for the films. The amps are the comics. They don’t make the bank but they need to stay quality to fuel the brand prestige for the consumer side.

My favorite one currently is the DSL40CR. I love the 40 watt mode but absolutely hate the 20 watt mode and the built in Reverb is virtually non-existent.
@StillLivinginthewoods Жыл бұрын
Yes, tube amps under 50 watts rarely sound as impressive as the big boys, but not everyone can accommodate that kind of volume, and all of the workarounds for that also degrade the sounds as well. The God's honest truth is that nothing can truly replicate the sound,.. and feel,.. of a high wattage tube amp pushing air in the room. I live out in the sticks, and still can't really crank the hundo. The struggles we face as guitarists...

Marshall has actually done some innovation in recent years, not sure why you say they haven't. The DSL line, with the DSL1 which can run direct OR to a cab, but not both at the same time, designed to be a recording amp, but works well in some live situations as well. I play in the pit for several local theaters and I've used my DSL1HR in three different musicals now. Used it with a cab, mic'd up in one, and run direct to the house in the other, and got TONS of compliments on how good it sounds. It's a fun little amp. I've worked in Music retail since 1990, so I've seen a lot of things during that time. One thing from Marshall that turns me off is the drive sound of the current MG series amps. The mids and highs just sound brittle on them if you're using the drive channel. I can't get them to sound good, no matter what I try. I'm in the middle of picking up Marshall for the shop I manage currently, and I wonder if the sale of the company will cause any changes in the distribution channels to dealers... One thing I DO hope happens is that the Natal drums line gets better representation in the US... KMC really has done nothing to promote them. Their first rep in the US was a guy named Josh (I forget his last name), and he got out and really beat the bushes showing them to dealers and signing dealers on, and once KMC took over distribution for the line, he left and went to work for Ludwig.... big loss for Natal. KMC should have done EVERYthing they could to have kept him on. I understand the comments about them being a legacy company and hanging on to and/or bringing back legacy products, but to be fair to Marshall, there were a LOT of dealers asking them to bring back the JCM800 series and the Silver Jubilee stuff. You're correct about the price of 412 cabs being out of hand.... the MAP price on the 1960 cabs is crazy these days... but the same has happened to almost every other company that makes 412 cabs....

They have decent XLR mics and the infamous Yeti is okay for being the prosumer mic that it is. Not that many audiophiles talk about B&W and I'm one of them. Guitarists are also like audiophiles or at least the snobbish kind in that they listen with their eyes, claiming tubes make more of a difference than they actually do, buy into hype, etc.

I imagine a lot of amp companies lost their primary market to cheaper brands the big names refuse to compete with, digital modelling, as well as the number of touring musicians that have switched to axefx, kemper, boutique amplifier brands.... combine the dissolving market with rising prices of electronic components, plastic and other materials.... maybe a psyche evaluation of the people that make the decisions at Zound is in order.

If I were to suggest something for Marshall to take on as a project I'd probably be pushing for an equivalent to the BluGuitar Amp1, or even the Mooer P1 (though I think that the latter would require a lot of R&D that a relatively simple solid state amp built into a floor unit with a focus on producing several really good sounds, as opposed to trying to beat Mooer on their home turf. There are better units than the P1 but not in the same form factor and price point.)

The thing is, they already did this with the rack gear they were making in the 90s. They used to be a really innovative company when I was a spotty teenager, turning the pages of their glossy promotional material. Those rack preamps are still pretty highly regarded, even now. I believe Maiden still use the JMP-1 in their tour rigs.
@Mikey__R Жыл бұрын
They shot themselves in the foot though, with the Valvestate amps. They intentionally voiced them differently to their main line of valve amps, to differentiate them as a cheaper amp, with a cheaper tone. And I think that's why a generation of guitar players think hybrid amps suck. Even though Marshall proved they can do decent premium hybrid amps with the JMP-1.
@jameslewis2635 Жыл бұрын
I would hope that this deal represents some more investment into the amplfication side of Marshall. For many years Marshall have been uninnovative and have even been cutting down on areas that they had been trading in for many years before (like selling their budget Park brand and the fact that they don't even sell bass amps anymore). I would also like to see more innovation in the space of pedals. Yes, Marshall has done pedals before but they have never done it consistantly or with a view to expanding into things like a multi-fx unit. It would also be nice if they could start offering things like integrated wireless kits to fit with some amps in the same vain as Boss does with the Katana.

Last Marshall product I bought new was a MB4210 bass combo back in... I wanna say like 2009 - and it was very good for the price. A range of two-channel hybrids and sounded great. Marketing with regards to power was fishy though. Advertised as 450W but as a now seasoned bass player I can guarantee that number was Peak and not RMS. Few years later I ripped the amp out and used the 2*10s as part of a bigger rig until they eventually blew up. My current bass rig has a Marshall 4*10 as a part of it... which I bought second hand. Incidentally that 4*10 is also from the MB range. Minus the lone VBA400 the MB seems to have been the last bass-centric gear they made, as far as I can tell. Speculation here, but a name like Marshall stepping into the class D bass amp market, even with a tube pre in them cos that's Marshall's thing, would have been a big deal. But instead that market got taken over by specialists like Darkglass. Last Marshall product I seen bought was a set of earbuds my friend got his girlfriend for her birthday. Neither of them are musicians.

I would see it as pretty good news if Marshall called it a day for making tube amps. What good is it doing for them in a world where their products are really available second hand, in the situation where someone actually does want one of these large, impractical amps? Love em, but between what's out there and what other amp makers are doing, I would have no issue at all with them just making a small number of amps in a year and mainly focusing on speakers for non guitar players.

Gotta do a video on JHS' DIBS agreement with Music Go Round stores. The executives of each company signed an agreement where he gets a text message sent to him each time a pedal is listed on any of the websites of the franchise locations across the USA. He also has first rights to purchase said pedal. I worked at a Music Go Round in the past and its a slap in the face to how they're run. They're small independent franchises staffed by a bunch of musicians who prioritize locals getting the gear over anyone else. During covid gear was flying off the shelves from online purchases so much that they all set up a policy where gear is listed online, but not for sale for 30 days in order to allow locals a chance first. They're also not price gougey like an independent seller with gear. They'll set prices at the middle of current market prices and if it doesn't sell within a certain amount of days/weeks it'll go up for a review to reduce the price. Seems to me like Josh Scott is taking advantage of good hearted people that aren't willing to rob you blind on a piece of gear for the sake of earning a few extra bucks.

I think they should offer a small speaker cab with a single 12" high power speaker like the old JBL to match the original heads. This might keep some of the heads off the market as them may not need an 18 wheeler to get to the gigs.

Marshall or someone else needs to completely redesign the tube amp. The weaknesses of heat,fragile glass and failing transformers along with the weight and bulk of the classic design can be addressed. A liquid cooled aluminum block with holes drilled in it could be the vacuum chambers and cool the transformer and other electronics. Be able to change the chamber to replicate the different tubes with presets and without rebiasing. Have a capacitor bleed circuit to make it safe to work on. Digital could be taught to speak analog. Have many smaller capacitors that fire sequentially to simulate the bloom of electrons fizzing of the plate in the vacuum tube. Then a hybrid design could use a digital signal to create a real tube bloom that is consistent.

Guitar players (at least the ones who could afford to buy actual Marshall amps) don’t really want their beloved brands to change. Marshall has tried new things in both the tube and solid state arenas but they never sold well. My first Marshall was an Artist 3203 head that was a tube/transistor hybrid back in 1986 that sounded awesome! They also did the rack mounted preamp with digital presets like the now vintage ADA MP-1, but guitar players want a Marshall to be a Marshall, a strat to be a strat and a Les Paul to be a Les Paul. Many companies have tried to branch out, but most times the public tells them to stay in their own lane.

I recently sold a Yamaha THR100HD and I got a Marshall JVM 205. Clean tones of that Marshall are on another level. However I did like more the “Marshall” sound of the Yamaha. What brought me to buy a 100w digital emulator was the 10w Yamaha THR, that was more of a practice, desktop amp that sounds amazing. Marshall should check this out. If they do it well, they could easily dethrone all the competitors. It all started with a little amp.

My Helix LT has over 80 different amp sounds that no-one seems to be able to tell from the real thing, and cost less than most Marshall valve amps. And that's before you even add in the 250+ effects pedals it models. Other than nostalgia, is there really any reason to still buy a valve amp?
