The peace of mind knowing I have a pantry is priceless.

People can find all types of excuses to not start preparing for emergencies, but my question has always been "How can we not prepare?" I went into a store just 2 months ago and there were many empty shelves and empty spaces in the coolers. There was meat but the prices were prohibitive, at least for my budget. I stick to the budget as much as possible but I did splurge for buckets and lids this month. So that means I cut back some other area of shopping. We are doing what needs to be done especially since we are predicted to see a very cold snap with heavy snow in the mid-west. If nothing else matters to you, have enough food, water, warm clothes and a way to cook in case the worst situations happens. We definitely need to be ready for the shortages that are happening and will continue to do so. Get ready people and do not forget about your pets.

If it help anybody, I go ask for free or sell buckets with lids at Walmart and Costco bakery, and Mexican bakeries, and so far I have gotten 20 free food grade buckets as well with the gama lids. They have 5 and 2 gallon buckets.

I'm with you. We've all been through the pandemic and now things just cost so much a little preparation and stock up is key. You raise an important point about pets too. We always buy cat food on sale and stock up, you've taken on pets you must look after them I say.

@@marialopez9051 OH YEAH! My husband works at Walmart and we purchased some of their frosting containers to plant some of my garden in last year! I did some baking last night and noticed I have lots that need to go into a container with lids, THANKS FOR THE REMINDER BEAUTIFUL!! You just saved me a few extra dollars on buying brand new ones!! 🥳🥳😆😊❤️❤️🥀🥀

We are 2 people only with 2 rescue dogs and 2 rescue cats. We are living in a cyclone prone area in Queensland, Australia, but we both grew up in Europe. At school in Switzerland I have learnt about having an emergency pantry, and I always have one. In Australia so far I went through 2 floodings and 1 cyclone. The emergency pantry always has helped me out when the power was cut for days. For the dogs I am canning beef, pork, chicken and turkey mince and I can mix it with veggies, eggs, cheese, brown rice and more. Being prepared is always a good thing.

I have two refrigerator freezers and one chest freezer. I took everything out and wrote down in a three ring note book what freezer has what . I also don't want to put my stash in my garage but I have three walk in closets and have bins placed in there. As I buy more stash I have the older items in the lower number bins and all the bins contents is also in the notebook so I look in the note book for an item I want and start in the lower number bin. Everything I have is not in view, other than water which is stored in the garage. I have paper products in large 6 foot cabinets from the floor to ceiling , They cover both walls of my garage. I also have a large pantry in the kitchen for every day use. You have a very large prep and I know you worked hard to accomplish all . You gave me some ideas.. jarred cheese.. I have cheese in the freezer but in he long run it is better to have some in the jars. Just discovered Martha Holmes and tried the seasoned butter beans. I bought many varieties . I freeze my pasta and then store it.. So far I have 35 boxes of pasta. And over 100 jars of Prego sauce. It is strange to see how many items you have that I have but many items I do not have... bakery products for one. Thanks for posting. I thoroughly enjoyed watching.

There’s always “fun” places to store extra food. Under your bed… you can even pull your bed and headboard out from the wall 6-12 inches and stack cans back there out of sight. I have things stacked in the corner of my bedroom. Can’t see it from the hallway walking past it. And it’s neat and organized. I have things stored under our stairwell. Get creative ! 👍🏻😊

Many moon's ago when I first started out i took a coat closet and put some cheap book shelves 1 on top of another. My husband bolted them to the wall and every week I bought 5 extra cans of stuff. I would buy those under the bed bins and put cans in there and slide them under my bed. And under my children's beds for many years. Then when we moved into our house i decided that food security meant more to me then having a spare bedroom. That became my food pantry but during the pandemic my daughter and her daughter moved in with us and they needed that room so we moved all the shelves out. Now my bedroom is half the pantry and half my bedroom. I still don't mind at all i still keep stocking up on everything. Where there is a will, there's a way always. Light & love all
@pamelajackson4952 жыл бұрын
You can use the space under beds, on closet floors or shelves. Use hanging organizers that you can put on the inside of doors. Be creative and use the space on hand, Buy what you know you will eat and just rotate it out as needed. You can do this without a ton of extra storage space. I do not have a pantry or storage room, but I have enough food and water to make it 3 months if needed. I think this is a good start, but just the beginning for us.

Thank you for providing the video tour. Your set up is spectacular! You have really done a fantastic job. Now I need to revisit my pantry! Have a great day! Fun Fact: For those who have the canned beans in their food storage/pantry and have a hard time knowing what to do with them, try baking/roasting them in your oven. They are crunchy like corn nuts/croutons (but won't break your teeth) I make them once a week and use them on salads, in soups and sometimes I just eat them as a snack. They are high in protein and fiber and way healthier than chips/cookies. I use Ranch seasoning and buffalo seasoning but you can use any flavoring you choose. (Ranch, Cajun, Buffalo, Herb & Garlic etc.) The recipe is quick and simple and can be used on canned beans such as: Garbanzo Beans (also called Chickpeas) Black Beans White Beans (also called Great Northern) Pinto Beans I am sure you can use other beans, however, these are the only ones I have made. *Recipe: ~Open the can and gently place the beans in a colander and rinse well. ~Gently place the beans on a paper towel to air dry making sure not to crush them. ~Once dry, place ½ teaspoon of veggie oil in a mixing bowl. ~Gently fold in the beans and coat them well with the oil. (If you need more oil add a ¼ teaspoon at a time so you don't get too much oil) ~Add a ½ packet of Ranch Dip mix to the beans and gently fold the beans until they are coated (less or more Ranch depending on your preference. I started with 1 teaspoon at a time) ~Gently place the beans on a cookie sheet and place in the oven at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Watch the beans carefully and stir them around gently about 15 minutes into the baking process. It is helpful to place aluminum foil or baking sheets in your pan for easier clean up but not necessary. ~After 30 minutes you can test the beans. If they are not crispy enough for you, put them back in the over for 5 minutes. Repeat the process till the beans are the consistency you prefer. ~Store them in a mason jar or airtight container. I store mine in the fridge for a most part but have left them on the counter as well. I have not seen any issues storing them either way. If you live where it is humid it would be best advised to store them in the fridge. Happy Cooking Ya'll! Hope you enjoy the snack.

I've stored all salt's in half gallon jars just cut the label off and tape on jars. I also have to half gallon jar of baking powder and four of cornmeal. Those are a very important need to let get hard or leave in a box. As we're Mormon and store ten year's to feed7 as we have been doing it for long term. Family is life with out it is hard but everyone has to be doing there part on the same as we can't take care of other's that isn't to be helping take care us. That's not hunting skills or fishing anyone can do that. But store all you can it's a busy time with getting gardens done. At the end of a garden throw it all in a jar bit tomatoes but everything else and make it sweet pickles with hot peppers. Yum

Thank you for sharing! It makes thinking about our food storage less overwhelming, seeing what others are doing. 😊 What really gets me, is breaking down the bulk purchases into smaller portions, hoping I’m doing things right so it doesn’t end up being an all around waste, especially since there are multiple scenarios we might have to prepare for. One example; I vacuum sealed freeze dried apple chips and now see the inside of the package looks like a white powder is on the apples and am not sure if they are safe to eat so probably will throw them out. Another example, I never use Crisco but I bought some thinking it was a good long term, shelf stable cooking oil alternative and I found it went rancid a year before it’s best by date (I can make a candle out of it now just surprised it didn’t last as I thought), that gets me nervous that I’m not making good selections for the pantry….😢 it’s a learning curve. Thanks again.
@Henleehomestead2 жыл бұрын
When first started, about 14 years ago now, I made a ton of mistakes. Better to make them now than later when it may be worse. The longer you do it the easier it will get. You’ll become more familiar with what you need and what methods work best for you. You’re doing great I’m sure, just like turning the crisco around by making a new use. Mylar bags and oxygen absorbers are great for long storage and they come in all sizes so you can have small or large portions. Just try to not to get discouraged and keep at it 😊

@@Henleehomestead thank you for your encouragement! 😊 I was a Girl Scout and grew up in California so I always tried to be prepared especially for earthquakes which was the biggest threat in my area. Others had to also be ready for fire season and then possible mud slides that followed the winter rains. I now live in the South where as you know, we deal with spin off weather from hurricanes, power outages, critters, bugs and mold, yikes! That is a lot! Now we add unrest, uncertainty and economic meltdown and my confidence starts to spin with overwhelm. I try to think about what my grandparents did to make it through 1929 and the war and recall what they might have done, they mostly lived very frugally, were very self sufficient and took any hardship in stride. My parents were also very frugal, they had Korea and Vietnam, the Cuban missile crisis and the 1970’s oil crisis, but I don’t remember them having the same type of concern for what might be coming as we do right now. The timelines are different but it always seems to come back to food, shelter and financial security. Thanks for being a teaching voice and creating a like minded community.☺️

What type/ brand of shelves are are using to hold up that much? I have been through 2 sets, they all break.
@Henleehomestead2 жыл бұрын
The biggest one with all the vegetable cans is Kobalt brand and it’s heavy duty. It’s rated 1500 lbs per shelf and measures 84 x 24 x 84 and I got it al Lowes. The other metal ones on the opposite wall are okay but not as good. I can’t remember their brand but they are from Amazon. The Kobalt and one other metal shelf has wire shelving (I just cut cardboard and put on them to keep things from tipping over) but one has particle board and it’s not good for anything heavy even though it claims it is. I went through several plastic shelves over the years before buying these and honestly even though the Kobalt one is expensive I probably spent more trying to save money and going through the cheaper ones. The Kobalt is 3 years old and just as sturdy as it was when we put it up.

It's now more than likely to give up the ghost or start playing up on you. Same with cars. We had a car for over ten years and one day we were driving in it and our son said "Oh bout time you got a new car isn't it?" We made him be quiet but it was no good.. literally three weeks later it was in an accident and written off. How do you keep bugs out of thing? You buy one mix with bugs and it could really do some damage watching from northern central West Virginia
@Henleehomestead2 жыл бұрын
Before I package my flour, cornmeal, things like that I freeze it in the package it comes in for at least 3 days. This kills any eggs that may be in the mix. Then I store for long term in mylar bags with oxygen absorbers. Once packaged I keep those mylar bags inside plastic totes to protect the mylar from being punctured.
@susanmoore78642 жыл бұрын
I put things for long term in vacuum sealed bags or jars. I put bay leaves in clear tubs or buckets to keep bugs out. All flour gets put in freezer for 3days, then I let it set out for 4 days to dry out , put several cups in brown paper bags then seal it in vacuum bags.

Freeze pasta, pancake mix, flour, any macaroni product etc. and I store in Glass jars with oxygen absorbers. Mylar bags is another option to keep the bugs away.

I found this video because I'm in need of restocking my pantry. And I feel great reassurance knowing that I have a pantry full of food. HOWEVER I will tell you that I'm in need of restocking a very full pantry because we ended up with pantry moth infestation. Never in my entire life have I had these until now (thank goodness) but apparently several people have. And essentially they chew through cardboard and even inner plastic bags. Several colleagues who've had these before said they were dang impossible to get rid of because if you leave anything with a moth/larvae/eggs then they will reinfest and stat the cycle all over. So, regretfully, we decided to chuck everything except glass/bottled/canned goods which we rinsed in hot water and placed outside for a few days. So I guess I'm just curious if you've considered this possibility and what you might do to prevent that? IN the future I guess freezing certain products for 24hrs. would kill anything possibly being brought in. We also had a tough issue like this when our full freezer went out. So it's been a year. I love being prepared but it HURTS to prepare and save all that food...only for spoilation to occur :(

Thank you for watching. I was not aware of pantry moths but I just took a “google crash course “ on them after reading your comment 😳. I am definitely not interested in those! I do freeze a lot things for at least 3 days to kill any eggs that may be in different foods but I was thinking more about weevils although I would think that would work for any eggs (I’ll be doing some more research). I know weevils need oxygen to hatch out so I do store a lot of things in mylar bags with oxygen absorbers. I’m sorry you had such a bad experience and a loss but I’m very glad to hear it didn’t discourage you to the point of not rebuilding. I hope you’re able to restock soon 🙂

I have overcome this problem. We also put everything outside, cleaned and painted the pantry from scratch. Glasses and tins came back, all carbohydrates, after having been in the freezer for 2 days, were stored in an aluminium box without access for moths. When our freezer went out of function, we used it for carbohydrates as well. No moths have returned so far. The boxes aren't cheap, but necessary.

I put dry bay leaves in dry products I open and put them on the shelves before loading my groceries.

I save/buy all I can in glass jars and use them for this very reason. Mix match covers aren't a problem because I put cloth covers over them so they all look the same. Plastic isn't good because if you ever get a rodent in your house, well they chew right threw the plastic 😭. Don't ask me how I know that one lol🤔

Prepping I don't mind. Is their a point where to much is to much? Just keeping it rotated is hard. But I recently just went trur surgery. months to recover. My family was clueless how to rotate or use some of it. A lot we had to donate because the date was way past expired. So frustrating I feel like I lost so much money!!!so now I'm really hesitant to stock to much.
@Henleehomestead2 жыл бұрын
I’m really sorry to hear that happened to you. I think if you’re going keep a lot on hand it has to be used in order for it to be economical. For us personally we use our pantry every day so I purchase items to replace as we use them and I buy things I know we eat. If I see we aren’t using something as quickly as expected I try to adjust for that. And you’re right, rotating is hard. It’s an extra chore added to all the things we already have to do. I guess we all have to decide how much is enough or too much for ourselves. I’m actually not of the mindset that any one person has it right on how prepared they should be. I think we all decide what our personal goals are and we’re all correct. I completely understand your hesitancy, just make a plan for yourself personally and stock what you’re comfortable with 🙂

So corn beef hash is so good you can feed five people on it when you peel potatoes boil tell you can just get a knife to go in light then cool and cut into tiny square and do the same with corn beef and fry up them make egg's pice of bread and say yum. But a cream and chunks of chicken like a taste of a chef came in your kitchen make up some rice you have so much of and make a two meal dinner. Don't over cook your rice to mush. Then take the chicken a la king sauce and put over both. But any rice meals with not soy sauce let me know.

Thank you! The really large one with all the vegetable cans is from Lowes and it’s the Kobalt brand. I love it! It has truly been able to hold the weight it clams with no problems at all.

Great storage . You had mentioned the water bottles are not for long term water storage . What do you use for long term water storage to keep it good longer like not in plastic containers ect? Are those large barells good for long term ? Curious on what you guys do .

Thank you! We have a well with a pitcher pump (we went with pitcher instead of electric in case we didn’t have electricity) but it’s actually not currently working because the pump itself broke. Our own fault because since it’s not our regular water source (we’re on county water for our home) we didn’t do a great job maintaining it on a regular basis. It is on our priority list of things to get replaced and back up and running asap. I saw some water catchment tanks at Lowes the other day that looked like a great option.

How big of a pantry to get a 6 month more food reserve? I am curious on the dimensions and layout. I don't see having a surplus as beneficial if it can be easily organized as its just an invitation for infestation. Does anyone have some dimensions for their pantry?
@Henleehomestead Жыл бұрын
Im really not sure how big of pantry you would need. It would depend on several factors including how many people you’re planning to prepare for during that 6 months and the dietary need of those people. I agree, a surplus is beneficial when you can see what you have and use it. I like to replace what I use so that I keep a good stock of items on hand.

Awesome. You could put a rack down the middle if you need to. Learn from me…our freezer died about a month ago. We lost roughly 1,000 $ worth of meat. Keep a check on your freezer daily..
@Henleehomestead2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately I already learned that one for myself. I had a freezer accidentally left open a few months back and caught it before I lost everything but still had some loss from it. Now every time I’m in there I’m checking them to make sure they are closed and operating and always before bed as part of my nighttime routine.

I freeze many every day items. Bread, bakery products, cheese etc and I am always checking it.. If it stopped working I would run down and buy another . Even if we had to trailer it home I would even buy the floor model.

I’m not going to lie. Your pasta made me nervous. Do you ever put any pasta in jars or Mylar? I had pantry moths once and never want them again.
@Henleehomestead2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I do have some pasta stored in mylar bags with oxygen absorbers. I was more concerned about weevils and had never actually heard of pantry moths until another subscriber commented earlier. After some google research, I definitely don’t want those. There is always room for learning and improvement 🙂

The really well made one with all the canned goods on it (vegetables, meat, soups etc.) is from Lowes and it’s Kobalt brand. I’m very happy with it. Weight capacity is 1500 lbs per shelf and it is very sturdy. The ones on the opposite wall are from Amazon and I’m not certain the brand but I’m not near as impressed with them.
