Polar Bear Family and Me
Polar bears are one of the most iconic animals on earth, and yet we know so little about them. Apart from fleeting glimpses, scientists and filmmakers have never been able to follow individuals to tell their story and record details of their family life. Now, taking what he has learnt while making the absorbing series The Bear Family and Me, wildlife cameraman Gordon Buchanan embarks on a new, ambitious and dangerous mission - to gain the trust of a family of polar bears and, using this unique opportunity, observe the life of these enigmatic animals as never before, over the course of a year.

In 1971 while serving in the USCG we were up in the arctic doing research about ice flows, weather patterns and other interesting things. We set up Polar bear proof huts on the ice and spent a couple of days taking various scientific readings. My job was to stand guard with a high powered rifle in case of a surprise polar bear encounter. When I saw one which was quite often, I would fire a couple of shots towards them not to hit them but, to scare them off. They would stalk us while hiding in the pressure ridges of the ice flow. All you could see of them was two beady eyes and a black nose. It was quite an adventure for a young 18 year old sailor.

Thing is, they don’t have much of a reason to fear us. They have no natural predators. So if they get close, you best hope it isn’t hungry. Unfortunately, where I live, if you see a polar bear, it likely just came off the ice after being stranded for a while. So they are pretty much always hungry. Sightings in Newfoundland have picked up lately, and with it, so have reports of break ins and attempted break ins.

Considering how much time they had, they really made a mess of that, left it to the last second then panicked. If a tourist on holiday did that with any wild bear, they'd be criticized for getting too close, not knowing what they were doing and putting themselves AND THE BEAR in a dangerous situation. I presume they have rifles incase something went wrong, so would the snowmobile not starting first time count as a reason to kill a bear?

@wolf in the wild- I said 'if a tourist did it', I didn't make any conclusion about his experiance. He screwed up on THIS occasion, even if he knew what he was doing. Having spent a year filming them, he should have reacted much better to a very slowly evolving situation. Instead, he was jumping around, dropping equipment, making a mess of the shot. Or do you think having experiance means you can do no wrong?

@adammonks591
@adammonks591 5 жыл бұрын
@wolf in the wild How is it common sense that an animal that MUST live on land is a marine species?Plus I see only one university making that claim. And by your logic, humans are marine animals. "Both cetaceans and sirenians are fully aquatic and therefore are obligate water dwellers. Seals and sea-lions are semiaquatic; they spend the majority of their time in the water, but need to return to land for important activities such as mating, breeding and molting. In contrast, both otters and the polar bear are much less adapted to aquatic living." - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marine_mammal Also, Wikipedia is sourced so no points there either.
@adammonks591
@adammonks591 5 жыл бұрын
@wolf in the wild "SO BY YOUR LOGIC seals are not marine mammals then? they inhabit all this criteria but theyre considered marine mammals same with arctic bears. IF YOU DEPEND AND SPEND MOST OF YOUR TIME IN OCEAN YOU ARE MARINE MAMMAL, simple as that" - I don't think you understand logic. What I was saying is that limited criteria like the one you used are subject to further analysis. What I was saying is that out of the animals we regard as marine mammals that they are the least reliant upon the ocean so your initial point was obtuse and not really relevant. "while humans dont spend nowhere near the amount on water that polar bears do" - Utter lies. There are people who pretty much live at sea. Fishermen, the navy, indigenous humans, people who like by the coast etc "also they only hunt there for a while, they dont live on water like bears do, humans aint marine. " Bears don't live in the water, they live on the land and hunt through holes in the ice. Humans are marine mammals by your definition. "also if you call those links glorified blogs or shitty articles, YOU MUST PROVE YOUR POINT." - Um, I did. You're just ignoring it. "im not saying that these are scientific sources, but information written there is TRUE. you must prove otherwise that its not. " - It's true? Curious, do you know how facts are reached? It's not like that, that's for sure. Now find me a link and attempt to prove yourself right. The onus of proof lands with you, not me.
@adammonks591
@adammonks591 5 жыл бұрын
@wolf in the wild "wikipedia is proved to be unrelialable source, because ANYONE can write there, even an alcoholic could go and literally write whatever he wants, thats why its not thrustful, and for example in my bros university its not allowed to use wikipedia as a source, universities and colleges dont trust something that anyone can write on. " - I'm well aware as, unlike you, I went to university. You certainly shouldn't source Wikipedia but you can source what it sources. Such a weak argument. You realize that Wikipedia is charity, moderated and not owned by a conglomerate so it's actually one of the best sources you can use. Who told you it was proven to be untrustworthy? You're lying again. "also polar bears spend most of the time on ICE which is part of the ocean, and no humans are not, because majority of the time they spend outside of water" - That's not the definition of marine mammal and they mainly hunt from a terrestrial base. The occasionally go in the water but quite rarely compared with the time they spend on land. "NONE of humans tribes FULLY RELY on ocean" - Lies, there are numerous tribes which do. Do further research. "they do some hunting in there sure, but they also do it in their local wildlands, whether its island tribes, coastal tribes or arctic tribes, pirates would be better comparison :D " - See above "also both polar bears and otters COMPLETELY RELY on ocean/water, all their food comes from there" - There food comes from there but they aren't adapted to life in water. Did you even read my links? "they spend majority of time on it, whether otters who dive and fish then rest on logs, like seals rest on rocks, or polar bears who hunt on ICE and LIVE ON ICE throughout MAJORITY of the year, and only go inland when there is NO ICE, or to go to the den for cubs." - Addressed these points too. You admit that bears don't spend the majority of their time in water so we are done here. Please try harder next time.

@@pandawithachainsaw9482 You are aware that bear was very much going in for the kill right, they are lovely and intelegent animals, but they are apex predators and don't come at humans like that without the intention to eat, the only reaon it was being so casual and relaxed; is they don't like to waste energy unless they know they can go in for the kill. It was quite obvious it wasn't catching or sneaking up on these guys who were paying attention to it from the get go, so it was just checking if it could get close enough for a oppotunistic lunch, but was never going to commit.

@EddThe19th
@EddThe19th 3 жыл бұрын
@@pandawithachainsaw9482 Friend I am sorry but its a polar bear, it constantly needs to eat, it lives in an environment where it is a near impossible struggle to find food and live day to day, the only way it survives is being a hyper predator. Polar Bears have no motivation but to find food, because they litterally have no time to not be finding food because its such a hard task. That bear very much wanted to eat because it lives in perpetual starvation, hard fact of reality. But also to your comment animals don't eat when they don't need to, sorry but you are just wrong. Lots of animals don't sure, but plenty of animals will eat and eat till they litterally kill themselves from over eating if they had access to enough easy food, animals ain't smart in general, and while bears are quite smart and wouldn't do that. They also have a near endless potential for eating as they store food up as fat, its litterally their entire survival tactic species wide so they will just keep eating and eating to quite some excess. But ontop of that Bears deffinitly less so than some animals, but alot of animals out there are incredibly sadistic, and will kill any other life forms they can get near, not to eat, but just for the fun and practice of killing. The world ain't a lovely place kiddo

wild methane production from animal farming is actually one of the biggest causes to incremental warming of weather; in addition to the large amount of carbon footprint humans have made. Plastics are killing plankton, which in return is killing the fish population. Not in far northern reaches like that, but more towards the equator this is a huge problem. Planting trees where it makes sense could help, but won't be near enough. One tries to offer up a solution, but it's not easy with differing opinions and no general consensus for change. Anyways, may god bless the polar bears :( they be my favorite animal and also one of the more critically endangered.

Why does this make me feel sad? 🥺 Meat-eaters tho they are, these beautiful, magnificent creatures are just trying to survive. I mean look at what we humans do to survive. We ravage Earth. Ravage without care for consequence or any compassion for future descendants... So badly do we ravage, that all those bleak predictions of a dystopian future by great visionaries, is feeling like it’s only just around the corner. 😕 Gotta hand it to us, we’re the most selfishly proliferating creatures on the planet... May we learn fast, grow fast and change our ways fast. 🙏🏻🤞 Thanks BBC Earth for the work you do. I hope it spreads awareness.

I dont really understand what you are saying. Should they just let him kill and eat them? They protected themselves in the most gentle way possible, no guns fired or anything. Or do you mean not to go there to film in the first place? These ppl film polar bears to educate themselves and others about their behaviour etc and they also shine a light on how current problems (like climate change) affect these animals. And anyway with the way politics are going right now, this kind of footage might be all we have left of polar bears in 50 years or so...

Though Kodiak bears are often touted as the world's largest land carnivore (meat eaters), they are really omnivores (using a variety of foods). They actually spend more time eating grass, plants and berries than meat. Grizzlies: They feed on salmon (can eat 200 salmon a day), carrion, trout, small rodents, insects, berries, leaves and roots. Plants are 80 to 90 percent of their diet. In autumn, a grizzly can eat 200,000 berries in one day, but during the salmon run salmon become about 95 percent of their diet. I hate when so called youtube experts think before they type.
