There has been a surprising amount of people asking if we are doing both sides. Yes we most certainly are. Just doing 1 at a time as we climb on and off the boat from the transom so need good access on one side at all times.

A few years ago I watched a series of shipbuilders here on KZbin. I can still remember that they always inserted a crossed and then a diagonally woven fiberglass mat. They said it reinforces the construction on heavily loaded parts like the boat hull. I don't know how much it amplifies, but it kind of makes sense to me.

The method you've used to install is soooo much more than any marine construction engineer would draw up. I am not amazed how strong it is, but it's not as strong as you think, but it will most definitely serve what you built it for, without question.

This is soo cool man. Been following you guys since the beginning and can't help but to feel proud of some blokes I don't even know. Lol. I love how you've progressed from just knowing enough to be dangerous. Just enough to get the general repairs done. Now you've evolved to full on bad ass customizations! There's probably 500-1000 sailing ⛵ channels out there on KZbin, but your content is more original and relevant. I know you guys want to get to sailing. But this really is what your channel is about for most people. For instance, Delos even has some cool ASMR sailing content. But in the face of adversity, it's the never gonna give up, try anything attitude, that makes it addictive and inspiring. More mods! Dream it, design it, build it, test it, break it!

I think I would’ve placed those access hatches on the top deck of the extension therefore not breaching the original integrity of the actual hull and maybe even allowing for storage of dive gear etc.

Our old cat had extensions, scoops were not yet invented, but similar. When we drilled through ours to fit the cross hull boarding/swim platform it poured salt water for days. But then ours were fixed with large stainless self tappjng screws!!! Could of done with your videos 20 years ago. That said we're planning to use your glassing "lessons" to refit what is probably going to be our last boat before we pop our clogs. Just bought minor shares in the community pub so if you ever sail across Cardigan Bay, give us a shout, there'll be several cold ones waiting on the bar. Cheers guys.

I’ve done a lot of epoxy, polymer, and methyl-methacrylate work, on concrete. Always there was sanding and grinding to do. On job specifically was the new jail in Santa Rosa California around year 2000. The city required us to not make any dust that could fowl the sensitive equipment. We used shrouded 4” grinders connected to a shop vac. 5 seconds of grinding would send dust out the exhaust. By adding a flex hose to the exhaust and connecting to a poly bag, we completely eliminated airborne particles. In your case I would want an air actuated grinder, shrouded.the air grinder is very light, and would make getting in tight spots much easier. There are no foolproof way to do this type of work, but shrouding,vacuuming, and dumping into a poly bag would eliminate at least 95% of you going and sanding dust.

G Day. Mate a little tip to add more strength to your internal structures when using a honey comb core material. Gouge out the inner core material to about 12mm to 20mm deep leaving the skins intact fill with the glue mixture and let it set sand back flat if needed. I use a soldering iron to melt out the inner core. It adds abbout 30 percent structural stiffness to the core structure. Cheers keep up the good work.

Such a great add-on. I'm constantly advocating to those looking to purchase their long term cruising boat to find something that has a sugar scoop transom. The utility they provide can't be understated. For swimming, boarding the dinghy, diving, etc., they are just so useful, especially if you have kids or dogs. It's also a great safety feature for getting someone back onboard. Kudo's on this customization.

Been a boatbuilder for 30 years and done a few transom extensions over the years, it's easier if you just step the battens you use to create the shape at the back by the thickness of the NIDA core, bend the NIDA core to the shape of the hull and laminate the inside, remove the battens on the outside and laminate the outside, no need for the Formica and you get a much better bond to the core, also putting epoxy directly on to fresh poly is not a good idea, solvents from the poly plays havoc with the epoxy, better just glassing the whole thing in poly, if you really want to use epoxy for the stiffeners then it's better let the poly fully cure for a week firs
@gazdubai3 жыл бұрын
Boat builder by trade, done a few,. yer I didn’t see the need for epoxy. Don’t mix ya drinks so to speak. The first episode with the straight steel pipe on the hull was a head slap, should keep away from filler on the hull then glassing over the filler, remember “ glass to glass filler last” but it’s all good. It’s super strong and you do nice work. The bitch with cats is just when you finish one side you have to do it all over again.
@jamaldarius72913 жыл бұрын
just scuff the surface once it’s dried and cured then you can use epoxy on it
