Car Wizard always calling out bad technicians. As a seasoned mechanic, I learn a lot from Wizard’s inspections. This is also the problem I have with ASE Certifications. Someone can get certified but have no practical skill whatsoever when it comes down to doing the work. ASE certification isn’t a bad thing, but it’s valued far too much in the industry and by the customer.

I.T. has/had the same problem, especially around the aughts. Lots of I.T. mills pumping out "certified" people who didn't even know how to turn stuff on properly.

@@johnhufnagel We called them diploma mills my old company hired a bunch of “auto techs” from one of them most of them showed up with no tools and they wanted me to train them and let them use my tools lol didn’t happen 😆 The company I worked for refurbished car and truck engines I took them apart and checked the parts the company let us long time people go and kept the new guys company went under a year later

They are only in it for the short-term profit. You can't sustain a business with this kind of game-plan. They don't care, because that is not their goal.

Hear that, you have work-smart mechanics and book-smart mechanics. Many ASE-certed techs do not have very much work experience to draw from. Anyone can pass a test, but not as many can do the job and do it correctly. I had 35 years in the business before retiring 9 years ago, have seen most everything done or not done out there in the industry. Well-spoken, Andrew.

This is what my father did when the shop didn't put the engine mount bolts in properly on mothers PT Cruiser and it came crashing down over a speed hump 250+ kilometers from their home leaving them stranded with oil all over the road, all he got was a $100 voucher and a we are sorry note as a response so the old man told them to piss off and went to a local back yard mechanic that's been treating them really well for the last 5 years.

I just don’t understand why car shops get away with not fixing the problem AND let the customer pay for it. Wouldn’t it be fair to say: ‘just restore the car to the state it was when I took it to your shop and I’ll take it to someone who can fix it.’ ‘Uh no, I won’t pay for the parts that didn’t fix the problem, nor for the labour’.

This is why you should learn to repair your own vehicle. The feeling of accomplishment doing a repair yourself is one of the things missing in society. If you have a kid let them help , even if you’re just knowing an oil change , filling up your windshield washer fluid or putting air in your tires .

My mechanic shows me the parts he replaced every time and even explains to me how it failed, he does it without me asking. I like that he does that because it proves he did the work but I also find it really cool when he explains how it failed. I’m a car guy and I do my own maintenance and I’m pretty good at diagnosing problems with my car, but I don’t have the experience to replace some parts, so it blows my mind how smart and genuine good mechanics are.

@@marcryvon I have an excellent local garage that I use for all my servicing and repairs. I once used my local Jaguar dealer in a neighbouring town to do some specialist work but when I got it back there was a bad vibration. My regular garage had a quick look and found the problem right away. Jaguar trained mechanics had not torqued up my nearside rear wheel nuts, which had then worked loose. Needless to say I now use my local garage all the time!

There is something called integrity that can be rare these days. I spent 25 or 30 years in the HVAC service industry, 10 more in a tech support roll. Unfortunately for consumers, there are so many shady companies out there that just don't care. All about the money.

@@guywebster8018 You would not need a lift , just get hold of the top of the wheel and push in and pull out . With that amount of play you will feel it . Its also a way to feel for wheel bearing play but with that its best to just jack it up on each wheel corner

Had a shop charge me for replacing two coil packs when they only replaced one. I knew because I had replaced all eight the year before and had personally marked them all before installing. (Just for my future benefit) Came in handy to prove the fraud, but I simply never went back and ensured others were aware.

As a professional mechanic, when I saw you wiggle the lower ball joint m, my jaw dropped. How could someone let that out of the shop. Sadly, I see stuff like that often. A customer of mine would have one mechanic finish a job. Then have me go over it with a fine tooth comb to ensure it was done right. Sad that has to happen, but it's common.

Wizard, the ball joint and sparks/coils are universal items - you don't need some type of global certification to work on those. The 'certified' shop should be publicly shamed for work like this.

Ford actually owned Jaguar at that time and the Jaguar chassis was shared with the Lincoln LS. The v-6 is derived from the Ford Duratec. (Wikipedia).

@@Route141 you're right, the engine is a ford block with jaguar heads. Makes around 240bhp. It's actually a really good, strong and reliable engine. I've got one with 177,000 miles on it :]

Being a ex mechanic myself i really dont see anything complicated on these repairs that would require you to have knowledge about European cars. Control arms, ball joints, rack and pinion, coil packs and spark plugs all pretty simple basic stuff. Hope you do a follow up video of what the repairs were when you are done

@@aabidamn Fortunately not! I got rid of it quite a while ago. I never had much go wrong with it: front anti-roll bar bushes, front drop links, coolant header tank, electric window mechanism and general servicing.

Something very similar to this just happened to me this past month. I took my 2005 F250 diesel to my local Ford dealer service department for a Water in Fuel warning. Within 50 miles of getting the truck back "fixed" (and spending $1200 to fix it and a few other maintenance items), the Water in Fuel warning came back. Because of this, and the rear main seal described below, I decided to have the truck towed to an independent diesel mechanic instead of going back to Ford. Mike did an inspection and found they did not clean the water separator system properly, did not find a crack in the lower radiator hose despite my having described the leak perfectly, they missed front tie rod ends and bearings that needed to be replaced, and they tried to tell me the leak I described was the rear main seal which would cost $3500! Mike said my truck's rear main seal leak is extremely minor and his own newer truck leaks more than mine. I am currently fighting with the Ford dealer to get a full refund - they keep promising it, but it hasn't shown up yet. I plan to go back there Monday to see why the refund showed up on my credit card and then mysteriously disappeared.

The S type was one of the most unappreciated Jaguars. I had an 03 model. I ran it for 3 years. I had to replace alot of deteriorating suspension parts,but it was otherwise a a great car. Wish I would have kept it

@@AbcAbc-sp1od they are not "basically ford" it's a proper jaguar. It borrows the floor pan with a mondeo, which is the mid size sedan PLATFORM. Also the duratec was developed by porsche and sold to various manufacturers obviously ford and cosworth. This engine is awesome. It's got jaguar heads on it. ZF 6HP Trans which shifts Uber smooth. It's a great car that is reasonable to fix. I love mine. 160k and still purrs up to 140MP

I'd replace the lower control arm - the ball joint flopping about like that would have damaged the cone into which the ball joint sits. But I'd do the Wizard determined repairs and keep the car. Driveline is good. Control arm, compressor, set of coils, fix oil leak and it would be a fine car. If they do keep it, please let us know the costs to get it up to snuff and also let us know if the other shop fessed up and reimbursed them. Justice is important.

I have both Lincoln LS and Jaguar S-type and they have the same chassis/drivetrain. They probably bought a cheap Chinese knockoff for the control arms, there's a lot of these suspension kits in e-bay that's like $100 for everything. Suspension on this cars don't last long even with OEM. Got the same issue with the AC compressor too, it's leaking and the Jag has only 80k miles. The engine on this jag is not really great, I think it's a ford v6.. I have the v8 which is the same on both S-type 4.0 and Lincoln LS v8 and delivers good power but the transmission is junk..I sold them before the transmission and timing chain tensioner blew.

12:30 - I know exactly how they could have missed it. They just drive it up on the alignment rack, hook on the sensors, adjust the front toe and call it a day stating "you can't adjust anything else on this car". I've seen it happen twice. They didn't check anything else, just fiddled with the tie-rod ends.

One thing that often gets overlooked is the rack mtg bushings; Nissan cars from around 20 years ago, were known for having them basically rot out..............impossible to center the steering wheel, due to said rack sliding R to L and vice versa (NO pun intended)

I once had my S type come back from the local Jaguar dealership with a metallic rattle on the over-run. I got it up on axle stands and found the trained Jag mechanics had not check tightened my rear wheel nuts! They challenged my claim and I've never been back since. I now use either my excellent local mechanic or, for something Jaguar specific I have found an independent specialist who is Jaguar trained and very knowledgeable.

I agree. I have different favorite mechanics in my area because my vehicles are American, Japanese and German. Each of these mechanics specialize in their areas and in some cases, their skills overlap. In all cases, my mechanics are honest with me and will tell me not only that they've had no experience with a certain job, they will recommend someone who does have experience with the job. Since I live in a rural area and reputation means a lot more for a business to survive in a small area by repeat customers, this happens a lot more more here than in a big city where some of the mechanics just don't care if you don't come back.

As a retired mechanic, it frustrates the hell out of me that there are so many unethical people in my former profession. Its so unfair to the customer, and to those of us who are ethical. A word of advice to vehicle owners: If you find a really good mechanic like the Car Wizard, stick with them for the long haul. Don't be penny wise and pound foolish. A note about certification: Its worthless. I once saw a "certified" mechanic installing spark plugs with a 3/8" air ratchet. Absolutely nuts, and a great way to strip the threads out of an aluminum head.

Pulling plugs OUT with an air ratchet is one thing; doing the installation is NOT acceptable, as Grey Jay pointed out. And I almost never used air power for any type of sparkplug.

Agreed about certification. I'm not a certified mechanic, I don't work as a mechanic. I am a school teacher. But I learned how to work on cars from my dad who was a mechanic (maybe not the best?). I know how to not screw people over, and I know how to double check my work to make sure it's right. It doesn't take certification to understand how to not rip off a customer, or how to not do a piss-poor job of something. If you don't know how to do something - find out how before you fsck it up. That's why we have service manuals and such. I do all my own repairs and have never been "an unhappy customer". There are a couple of things where I was in over my head, but I don't blame that on anyone else. And in the end, I still managed to solve those problems for way less money and hassle than if I was paying a shop. And yes, aluminum heads scare the **** out of me. Had a plug go soft in one of those when I was young, just because (don't even feel I was overtightening it) and ever since I have been extraordinarily careful. I own a car now that likes to eat plugs for breakfast thanks to high compression and high boost together - it has to has plugs changed about every 25,000 miles. Makes me nervous every time. No way I would use a power tool on those things.

Hi all I live in the UK for my sins and I know where the Wizard is coming from finding a good shop is difficult and now even worse due to this pandemic as a lot of the best small places have gone. I watch a lot off car shows but the Wizard is one of the best. I have also lost my M O T shop this is the UK'S vehicle road worthiness test and now have to build a trust with a new place not easy. I'm always keen to see your new videos Wizard. You are brutally honest, but also have total integrity. If you say a job needs doing, it does. You aren't just going after as much money as possible from a customer. I'm in the UK, but if I was on your side of the pond I'd be coming to you for any jobs I couldn't do myself. Mostly diagnostics, as I don't yet have a decent scan tool, but most of my cars are pre- OBD anyway. I do all my own maintenance. That way I know what has been done. I'm not a mechanic by trade, I've just learned as I go. Plus it's fun to work with friends on our own cars, as a few beers and a bit of craic is always involved. I've also helped out a few friends and neighbors, usually females, who've been ripped off by unscrupulous garages who either quoted for work that didn't need done, or didn't do work they'd charged them for. On those occasions I've only asked that they cover the cost of any parts needed. My time has been provided FOC. I just hate seeing people who aren't mechanically minded getting ripped off. Unfortunately in most shops you never meet the mechanic. You talk to someone at the front desk and that's it. It's difficult to identify a good mechanic without meeting them. If your car never gives you any serious trouble, you will never know. Most mechanics can replace a blown shock or change the oil. I'm glad to watch this channel but I live in a place where I've been bouncing around from shop to shop for years and I've never gone back to the same one twice. It's that bad.

TRUE STORY: back in 2004 I was a young 20 something and owned a Pontiac Fiero v6 that started running lean with glowing headers. Didn't have the time or energy to fix it myself so decided to take it to a Pontiac dealership thinking they'd have quality mechanics. They diagnosed the issue as vacuum leak and would fix it for $750. They also said they were doing a special on their "superior" oil change and would do that for an additional $35. Considering I was planning on doing an oil change already I said "sure, let's do both". I'd already bought oil that I left in the trunk but knew I could return it to Walmart. Two weeks went by and no update from the dealer. I called and asked for an update. They said they'd get to it in the next day or two. Called two days later with same reply. A few days after that (nearly 3 weeks from original drop off) I finally went to pickup the car. Driving it home, I noticed a lot of backfires and loss of power when stepping on the gas. It was literally running worse than when I dropped it off!!!!! THIS IS WHERE IT GETS BAD. Opened the trunk/hood and saw 3 vacuum hoses that I could clearly see weren't hooked back up. They also used the oil in my trunk that I bought to do the oil change....WTF! Who said they could use the oil I bought? To put the cherry on top, my engine was still running lean with glowing headers..... at that moment I knew I just got screwed! I called and complained about everything, but as expected they denied everything and basically told me to pound sand. At 20 years old, I didn't really know what to do and had to junk the car. I swore that day to never think a dealer is better than any other mechanic shop. Wasted ~$800 at that dealership, 2+ weeks of my time and basically lost the car. Thanks a lot Pontiac of Madera CA.....POS.

I had a '96 Ford Mustang lowered and offroad CAT delete exhaust, but the car was never right. I was chasing a misfire for ages on this car so I just decided to drop it at the dealer and see what they found. I paid for a "drivability test" where they'd run codes and put the car up on the lift to check it out. So they had my car on a lift, they could see the bottom of the car, they drove it into the shop and could hear the loud exhaust I had on it. They came back to me and told me I needed my passenger side rear catalytic replaced....on a car with NO catalytic converters installed I needed 1 of the 4 "replaced." I asked the tech if they put it up on a lift to check under the car? "Oh yes, thats a standard part of the test" So why does 1 cat need to be replaced on a car with no cats? No answer, I took my keys and left after paying them the $115 for the time to try to rip me off. Thanks Fox Ford of Grand Rapids

I took my grandma’s Pontiac to a small town repair shop complaining that the transmission was acting up. A few days later the mechanic called and told me the actual problem was a $30 ignition coil. Car ran flawless after that repair, and I had a new favorite mechanic that I told everyone about.

Wizard that loose bolt it terrible. My dad had a control arm and lower ball joint replaced... after a month my dad was driving at 30mph... and the bolts were not tightened and the drive shift popped out and the wheel dropped and he ground to a halt. That same week he did 3 trips on the UK highway... my Family were lucky it did not happen at 70mph, otherwise the car would have flipped and it could have been fatal. I've gone through three local shops: one does unnecessary work (told woman she needed head gasket- all it took was radiator cap), one shop double charges on labor (charged 7 hrs for 4 hr book rate), and another does poor quality repairs (used duct tape to mount dash switch, forgot to tighten battery clamp). Now I understand why a woman shipped her car to the Wizard all the way from Texas!

I got hurt and no longer do even minor work on my own car. Went to try a new shop yesterday just for an oil change. When I told them the suspension had been rebuilt so there were now six zirc fittings to lube, they told me they charge ten dollars to lube the chassis. I walked out the door......

Car wizard:I've been in the auto repair business for 45 years and I've seen my share of shoddy work like this. It's really terrible to think mechanics are doing this to people's cars. If I were the S type owner, I'd sue the previous shop who did the job and make sure they paid Car Wizard to do the job which would be done correctly in the first place. The Jaguar S type is just a Ford (Lincoln LS). This is absolutely sickening to me because someone could have been killed in an accident from that poorly installed ball joint. I've actually seen a similar thing happen with a Jaguar XJ12L that just left a major auto repair chain. One of the front wheels flew off as the driver was turning into a shopping center. I stopped to help him out and he informed of the incident at the shop,so I said call the shop immediately and have them fix the car. He said he was about to go on the highway after leaving the shopping center and its a good thing he didn't or else a serious accident could've happened. Even sadder is when women car owners are ripped off for equally shoddy work. So yes I know the drill when it comes to this sort of thing.

You're going to sue someone over a $3000 car for some shoddy repair work? Nope. That's called throwing good money after bad. You simply show them this video and ask for your money back and you'll likely get some satisfaction. The coil packs and the ball joint are indisputable, the AC compressor could have been specified by the customer - "go with the cheap one". It might even be under warranty still. The other work was performed.

The S-Type isn't a Lincoln LS, the platform was jointly designed by Ford and Jaguar. You may as well call a Lincoln LS a Jaguar S-Type.

The point is to stop the behavior both before they kill one or more folks in a freeway pileup and to make the rip-off didn't do the work tactic not pay.

@@Rover200Power It shares a platform with a super common domestic car, so local shops have no 'it's foreign and strange' excuse. It's the same thing with Chrysler Crossfires and Benz SLKs. The Benz is the same, but they pull BS like changing electrical plugs then mark up the price 300% for parts. ($650 for a seat switch in my case - or $150 and solder the Benz connector on the Crossfire part)

It's like this in so many other occupations, even medical. So many things enter in to whether someone is a good "fixer" for your problems. Honesty, experience, knowledge, and even the process one follows to "fix" something are all important. "Fixers" like the Wizard are golden. When you find one, hang onto them.

I would love to see you do this inspection with the owner watching. I had a repair shop and always showed the customer what was found and educated them about what it meant. When I was a line mechanic at a big dealership I was told "don't talk to the customer just get it out". Nuff said. Also, many people can pass a test but can't do the job. I was a trainer in the USAF on jet fighters and some of the newbies could pass the field training tests but had no idea how to fix the jet.

I've had Saab, Audi and MG. I expect to hunt around for a competent European make mechanic. What bothers me is the shops with no experience with those Marques want to learn on your dollars just to stay busy. The shop who worked on this Jag should be taken to small claims court. It's one thing to be inexperienced and over work a problem and a damn crime to charge for work not done. Thanks for shining a light on this issue.

In my experience, a shop that won't work on European cars is a shop I won't let work on ANY car. Claiming a car is difficult to work on because it's simply something you don't work on every day is to me a sign of either someone with low intelligence, or who is unwilling to exercise a finger to open a service manual, or simply take the time to observe and figure out a system that's slightly different than a Chevrolet. Cars are cars, it's not exceptionally hard to work on something European versus American. The crazy shit is some of these guys work on the exact same thing under an American nameplate and won't touch it under a foreign nameplate. Not two brain cells to rub together.

I had a newer Ford that every time the traction control or ABS kicked in, the brake pedal would go to the floor the next time I pushed it. Apparently, this was a common problem and technicians were diagnosing this as a bad master cylinder. Replacing it didn't fix the issue. The problem was air on the back side of the ABS system. The fix was to bleed the brakes and use an automotive computer to actuate the ABS pump to bleed the air out.

As of this day 13th Jan 2022 I have the same problem. garages replaced the brake lines (rusted) and bled the brakes...pedal to the floor !! so I bought a new servo Bosch and they fitted it..bled the brakes....pedal half way down. Cant make them understand that they need to plug in a computer to rotate the ABS discs to clear the air,,, Where have all the good techs gone????

I was seeing all things. I says if you have problem with first sensor, you gets wrong the next sensor. The manger tell me to live, and take me away from the show room. I was suprised nobody of mechanical saying something about it, just stay and listening too rubbish. Many mechanical don’t anderstand Howe things working , they just look att computer system and says this is wrong, and this , and this to, because they not see the symptoms from no1 is going too no2. Mechanic must anderstand how system is working, that’s number 1. Not what computer says. I am just hobby mechanic just 66 years old have experience

As a formerly A+ certified computer technician, I would put the quality of my wrenching up against the vast majority of stealership technicians and so-called "certified" technicians. There's a LOT that I don't know, but when I do a job, I make sure it gets done right.

Same here. Btw, A+ Certified is a joke. I got that years ago, it was one of the most basic and simplest tests I've ever taken. Basically means you know how to plug boards together. If ASE is anything like that, it's laughable. That said, basic diagnostic skills go a long way in working on both computers and cars, and in life. It seems a lot of people lack the skill to actually look at something, figure out how it works, and why it has stopped working. For some of us, that's natural. Others? Not so much.

I just picked up a 2000 Jaguar s-type V8 in comparable condition to this one for $450 because my customer didn't want to put any more money into it. It had been sitting for about 4 years and wouldn't start because of a bad starter that I replaced. After that it was a fuel pump problem and the customer decided that they didn't want to put any more money into it. I replaced the fuel pump and after that the alternator. It does have a low speed misfire sometimes and needs some minor interior repair but other than that it is a nice car to drive.

Thanks and keep up the good work and put those sorry shop's on blast but be careful when doing so. Word spread fast that they suck! If you can have the owner bring the tech to come to your shop and expalain what happen. The owner of that shop might not know.

I almost got ripped years ago when I was in my early twenties. The shop was just down the road from where it broke down and where I worked. I was told the shop did lots of diag work and that my engine failed and needed to be replaced or rebuilt. Luckily my Dad and Grandfather disagreed and I had it towed to another shop we trusted. Turned out to be electrical and not very expensive from what I remember. For shame on a shop that would do that to a customer.

When I worked at an auto parts store, I got my ASE certification in auto parts sales. It was quite a comprehensive test, and I scored highly on the exam, but there were things that were not covered in the test, and I was continuing to learn throughout my employment. Also, you can be ASE certified in various aspects of mechanics and still not be completely competent in everything! Experience counts for a lot, and honesty is all important in any type of business. This is why the Car Wizard has such a successful shop... not because he is the cheapest, but because he is the best!

Love your channel, keep up the good work. Although I realize it's not possible for everyone, but if you are able try and learn how to work on cars yourself, as Scotty Kilmer says you aren't going to rip yourself off and you save a fortune! In October I bought a 1997 Toyota Celica GT convertible, 230,000 miles. Only paid $1200. Owner died so was part of an estate sale. Since owning I've: replaced struts and mounts with KYB's, replaced rear drop link arms, new rear brake hose, new spark plugs, plug leads, rotor/distributor cap, replaced a couple of temperature switches, new transmission filter and gasket and diff fluid, replaced valve cover gasket, my wife repaired torn drivers seat and center armrest, replaced one of the convertible locking catches, put on new parking brake cables (old ones were seized), new oil and filter, did some minor body repair including painting front bumper. Also one or two very small things including new antenna. Carried out all this work myself, there are plenty 'how to' of videos on KZbin. Estimate parts cost me around $1300, so with purchase price of car I'm all in by about $2500. Car does have an R Title from front end damage in 2004, so it's never going to be worth that much, but no intention of selling anyway. Enjoyed working on it (for the most part), learned so much, the car runs and drives like a dream and looks great. Getting all this done at a garage would have been at least 2 or 3 times what I paid for parts, but I know it is done right, no question. Last month got it through the state inspection, as well as an 'enhanced' inspection (due to the R Title and being bought from another state), zero advisories or issues.

I seem to remember the base torque figure on a ball joint was 120 ft lbs, but that just may be on my vintage 60's Chrysler. But I imagine it's in that range across the board. LCA to tie rod castle nut is around 45 ft lbs, etc

My 92-year-old neighbor had a similar experience. She drives a A-body Buick Century wagon that she bought new. Once it turned 100k miles she tried to have it inspected and any repairs needed done at the local Buick dealership. They turned her away saying the car was too old but they did recommend a local shop which she went to. That shop charged her $3,800 in repairs. They replaced suspension steering braking HVAC as well as changing all the fluids. The car still drove very well when she picked it up and she was happy with it until in early December she took it to get tires on it. Once upon the lift the technician noticed that the engine subframe looked like Swiss cheese and a used rust free subframe was $750 plus installation. How did the technicians working on it for 3 or 4 days especially since they were doing suspension and brakes not notice that the subframe was rotten to the point of it being dangerous? My neighbor could easily afford to buy a new car but she drives maybe 50 miles a week and she said she does not want a new car because she does not like all the new technology in it and she said why spend 50 to $60,000 on a new car when she may only have a couple months or years left to drive

As an owner of an ‘07 S-Type R and ‘10 XKR, my heart goes out to the car owners and David because I’ve had those same suspension and AC maladies and shop experiences, feelings, and financial investment w/Jaguar certified shops. I’ve gone to a non-Jaguar certified shop for AC work and all with the same result. I now have a young and diligent independent mechanic that maintains my cars and the credit really goes to him being thorough, knowledgeable, diligent, and accountable. I’ve also had the “make it right” experience multiple times taking it back to the initial shop and David is right, you don’t want to go back. You just want your car back. @@scottbrown8359 my local napa just serviced my xk8, they quoted 900 for valve cover gaskets and 2600 for fresh coolant hoses + octopus hose, that 3500 turned into 5100 dollars by the time the bill came, unbelievable. they also marked up the parts just because, I have heard great things about bob sellars jaguar though, he is an hour or two south of me in daytona, i am in jacksonville, but he is honest from what i’ve heard and enjoys the cars. unlike some specialists i have been to

It's frustrating to be old and not able to do your own work anymore and have to rely on apes with wrenches (roll of the dice) to do quality work. That chassis and drive line is also used on the Lincoln LS and Thunderbird through 2006. Yep, motor mounts, Motocraft coil packs, valve cover gaskets including the O rings on the timing advance solenoids, etc.....Better service that trans too. They run hot and burn the oil until the trans goes bad. Been there.

I've had similar experiences with mechanics taking shortcuts. I once had a service done on a Volvo and it was supposed to be done as per the service manual. MY dome light wasn't working and I didn't tell them just to see whether they checked it. When I picked the car up it still wasn't working and when I asked them why they didn't check it they said they need some feedback from their customers. I told them it was in the checklist and all they had to do to check it was open the door and look at the light.

Pretty hard to know what solution there can be for garages who charge for work which has not been done and criminally rip off their customers. Can industry test vehicles be sent in under cover to validate or not the work they claim to do? Something has to be done to bring these shops to account to protect the consumers. I hear a lot of mechanics say "oh those European cars or exotic cars or whatever, they're just different!" They're really not. Sure, the design language and engineering language are different, but that's just as true comparing a Chevy to a Honda. The reality is, the laws of mechanics, electricity, hydraulics, pneumatics and physics don't change. If you truly have a solid foundational understanding of these things, then unfamiliar vehicles shouldn't frighten you away. The only real hindrance is a lack of service information and/or parts availability. You're not going to hop on AllData and just look up a communications network diagram on a 2021 Lamborghini to diagnose a fault, then order a replacement module from FirstCall. But an 02 Jaguar? Cakewalk. I've been a mechanic for 20 years. I've worked on foreign, domestic, exotic, classic, custom, medium and heavy duty equipment, lawn & garden, you name it. Learn a solid foundation, and your only limitation will be service info and parts availability. Don't be scared. Everything was your first time, once. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

The most unfortunate aspect of all that despicable behavior by shop owners and their alleged auto mechanics was that the Jag owners had no form of retribution. Justice for the owners was not served. Nothing the Wizard pointed out should have been too hard for any competent mechanic to diagnose and fix. Coil packs can be hard to get at but it's one bolt and an electric connector. That ball joint is just a nut. Bad motor mounts might be a LITTLE unique but again, not something super exotic. And the A/C compressor is also inexcusable.

I own a 2001 S-type with the 3.0. It is claimed to be 248 HP. I really like mine as it has the sport suspension with the 17" wheels not the standard 16" that your customer has. Very nice car!

This is precisely why like John Ross, Jake, and Elliott I work on my own vehicles. It does make life easier having friends with shops for sure, but most everything I do is done at my own garage. There are definitely great mechanics out there like the car wizard but always remember you get what you pay for and good mechanics are more expensive but they do honest good work.

If our governments where as transparent as Dave the Wizard is with his work, we would have a well oiled machine. im just a kid, and i enjoy working on my old Toyota. I've only ever taken my car to 3 shops and i had to correct their work all 3 times. it agrivates me. Wish The WIzard was closer because i do have one reoccuring issue with the handbrake just losening over time constantly. Thank you wizard for all your hard work, and transparency on it! Keep it up!

Driven S types and XJ (350) for years, that oil leak was my first guess as the video started. Very common part to age and give up the ghost. As for the rest of the work carried out on it, well that just confirmed why I work on my own cars and only use a couple of well known Jaguar specialists!

Over 30 years ago I used to take my vehicles to a garage that was run by a guy who worked on the buses with my late father, anyway they had a falling out when I was over seas. I decided to learn car maintenance & for the next 25 years I would only take my car to a garage for the yearly MOT test everything else I would do myself due to garages doing exactly what the previous guys did.

Good job! I have 2 of these: 2000 v-6 & 2001 V-8. Built on the Lincoln LS platform, these cars (if you know which parts are Ford) are not that expensive for replacement parts. Much of the engine is Ford and almost ALL of the suspension, etc. is Ford. My air compressor looked like it was leaking, just like this one! Upon closer examination, however; it was only the power steering pressure switch above it leaking down onto it.

Wizard you have no idea how hard it is to find a good and honest shop here in Philadelphia PA.. They always try and get the most money they can. They dont care if you come back or become a repeat customer. It's all about how much can I get from you today!!

I took my Miata to two mechanics that I have used a few times. Battery kept going dead. One mechanic had it twice. All replaced the battery with reasoning which made no sense. Still battery was going dead. My audio guy was working on my audio system and noticed the battery cable was not tightening. He fixed it in 2 minutes (for free). Unfortunately I am finding the lack of workmanship and caring is bleeding over into plumbing, electronics etc. Thank for the video. -Florida

Another fan of the S-type here... Very nice cars, though personally I would want one a few years newer and prefer the V8. I think one of the reasons I like them is they're distinctive... They don't look like every other car on the road. They do rust, too, especially in the rockers near the rear wheels. Here in.Calif. it's not much of a concern. But I'd look closely at one from the midwest wirh road salt on it. The paint on the rear quarter might be loss of the clear coat, or maybe there was a repair and the repaint didn't hold up. Probably pretty easy to fix. I try to do as much work myself as possible. That way I only have myself to blame! Unfortunately, I can't always do the work and got cheated with shoddy repairs or other times bought cars that someone had already screwed up.

One of my favorite videos. Roman Bronze S-type. 2001 only and only available on S-type and XK. I briefly had my own shop and tried to pull in all the Jag, RR, Aston, Bentley work I could. I hated seeing those cars hacked up and always did my best. I went to work for an independent and was lost on the Asians, Kia’s and Hyundais and domestic stuff. I didn’t like working on anything but European and they just didn’t have the client base for that. I left after a year.

Never realized how similar the underbelly of these cars look to that of my Lincoln LS. I guess it makes sense, being that they're built on the same platform.

Its built on the same platform as the lincoln ls and thunderbird. Same engine aside from the vvt and heads done by cosworth. Infact lincoln ls window regulators work on this car which is cheaper then using jaguar. Jaguar was owned by ford at this point.

@@kennethwolff2975 Yes, I'm aware. The V8 in the Jag is a 4.0, tho, while the V8 in the LS is a 3.9. Same engine. Just a smaller bore

Well done M8!! From the U.K. here, & Jag main dealer's have a list to go through b4 actually finding out what the problem is, around $1,000 in your money. We had the S-Type R 4.2 V8 Supercharged, fantastic car, sad to sell it. But got RRS Superchared now.

In my experience, charging for parts that are not replaced, and for work not done is standard operating procedure for many shops (including dealerships). They get away with it because most customers don't know anything about cars. Keep up the good work Mr. Wizard, I love your channel. If I didn't do all of my own work, I would be at your doorstep.

Every profession has its bad actors, from the just plain incompetent to the greedy and dishonest. I'm not gonna take The Wizard's experiences as typical. You have to realize that The Wizard is probably the "shop of last resort" where people take their cars after other shops mess them up, and as such he probably does more than most shops' share of fixing other peoples' mistakes.

Oh man, finally an S-Type. The previous shop really screwed up, 5 months held the car and didn’t do anything. That’s couple of days worth of work, super easy to work on too. I had an LS V6, which is basically the same thing as early S-Type for 17 years, then had an S-Type R which was fantastic and now have an XFR which is even better, they all are based roughly on the same Dew98 platform more or less, great cars.

From the tour this video gave me, I agree it looks relatively easy to work on, only that need to remove the intake to get at the second bank of coils and plug. Much better than the average American car, where even simple things are buried under everything else and it can take hours of labour to get at them. It probably helps that it's a relatively small engine for the model, so there's more space around it than there would be with the V8.

Unfortunately, poor certification process (too easy, pay to win, everyone win) allow unsatisfactory characters and people to be mechanics, hence the poor image. This has been in the process over the last decade or two and now filtering through. Also, the turn over of people are so high (for many reasons including poor/degrading/systemic and endemic problems in industry practices and industry in total) that the critical knowledge of problem solving, symptomatic diagnosis, work around techniques etc are all lost due. Having people like yourself that KNOW the product, have gotten to know and understand the nuances, quirks, nature of the model CAN fix it. Others have been trained like robots (remove and replace) and never stay long enough to know what it is to understand (higher level of investigative, diagnostic skills etc), think out of the box (creative/non straight forward work arounds) and be actually capable in fixing.

I hope they take the shop to court and win. This video would be great evidence! And as someone that has had to replace steering racks and ac compressors that were very tucked in and hard to get to the ones on this car are right there and easy to reach! It seems like a very thoughtful design.

Yup, one of the reasons most shops get you to sign off on everything before they even do anything which frees them for everything so there is little you can do but pay the bill and never go back. I once called out a shop for some of their shoddy work and they reversed everything on me and told me to never come back! Now I use an old technique used in the electronics industry to prevent tampering which is to use a paint stick to put lines across nuts and bolts, oil filters and so forth just to make sure they have actually broken my "paint" seal.
