My friend had an XJS V12 HE and this crap vehicle was killing engines any 20.000 kilometers when driven faster than 220 KMH on Autobahn and that was under warranty during the 1980s@@therealtoyshop

About 10 years ago my airline mechanic buddy got himself a pristine XJS with the V12. White, perfect, and beautiful. This man spent 30 years working on B727s, DC10s, MD11s, and 747s. The Jag defeated him in ONE month. Good luck, Wizard, and to EuroAsian Bob...WELL SOLD!! I see this back "For Sale" within 6 months.

I would have certainly done the woodwork on the Jaguar Wizard worked in the saw mill at Browns lane Coventy at that time, the wood is mirrored from the middle out os its a set, If we scraped one part by going through the walnut venner we would have to do the walk of shame and pull the whole set out, look for the numbers on the back of the woodwork if you ever take it out

I had a S2 XJ12 from nearly 20 years earlier. In those cost cutting days the bean counters would have had a fit at the thought of adorning a car with so much nicely prepared wood. The ride and the power delivery though were exactly as the Wizard describes.

Five years after Ford bought Jaguar, that car was a whole lot better than before and truly a quality limo. You only have to look at the improvement to the engine layout, earlier versions look like a dog's breakfast in comparison.

Hi from Sydney, Australia. These are truly beautiful cars and with the 6litre v12 even better. I own two lovely 1970's Cadillac Fleetwoods a '72 Brougham and '74 Talisman. I love them and have owned both for over 30 years. But I really like 1960's and following Big Jags. When I was 6yrs old in November 1961 my mum bought a new Jag mk10, black paint and ivory leather interior. She kept it 10 years & when they stopped making the really big mk10's she bought a run out one brand new in 1971 by then with the BMC-Leyland share buyout the BMC guys re-named all the Jags with mk10's being renamed 420G's for the 1967 models in late 1966. My first car was a family hand me down 1958 aussie GM Holden. At 19yrs old I bought a 1965 4.2 litre mk10, owned it many years replaced it with a really really rare long wheelbase '74 series 1 xj6 I owned that 32years and sold it to a mate, as I had the opportunity in late 2012 of buying a one owner with full mechanical history 1967 mk10/420G with a mere 50,125 miles on it. Owned from new by a doctor he had the car serviced MONTHLY, not by mileage. In my 10 years ownership, I have added almost 40,000 extra miles, it has been flawless, like a giant Meccano or Ezybilt set for adults, it's easy to service yourself, everything unscrews/bolts nicely too. Best of all though these (mk10's) are tough, solid, well-built cars. The 3 Jags that I have owned have all been the ultimate version 4.2's with the high output bronze heads, not aluminium so give ZERO head gasket issues and as an export spec car it came with toughened valves from the factory new so it "drinks" unleaded petrol without issues. like the v12's the 4.2 inline 6 Jag engines have their own "weird" pre-engaged starter motor so when you push the start button it emits this violent high pitched PRING sound and the engine erupts into life with just one press of the button, always, hot or cold, raining or hot & dry. Impressive, equally impressive is the massive overkill construction of the front engine & suspension cradle/mount cast in heavy iron like a railway track girder, same with the front & rear suspension pieces. And so it lasts there are dozens of grease nipples on the car, forget sealed for life junk, this is real engineering, just get grease gun & pump it full like on a train these are components designed & engineered to last. I have a mate with a 2001-02 Mercedes CL500 coupe, lighter than my big heavy jag , just 20yrs old not 55yr old like the Jag, however near all of its alloy suspension arms needed to be thrown away as they were either bent, worn (hinge points) or worse cracked, on a car whose first owner was an old lady and I suspect by its really low mileage was barely driven, and would never have seen an unsealed dirt road. When we looked at it on the hoist of a mechanic mate of ours, I was shocked at how cheap and flimsy the Merc undercarriage componentry was compared to my 1960's Jaguar's componentry which has the durability of a bulldozer. Just weeks later on holidays he & his wife were away in the Merc & its belt tensioning pully bearing froze up causing major damage as this "sealed for life" bearing seized. By comparison the Jaguars one has a grease nipple on it & should you wish, you can unbolt it and take the bearing to pieces and hand fill it with grease just to be really sure. Same with the front wheel hub bearings , they have a grease nipple on the front hub, flip off the hub cap, get your grease gun & pump the front wheel hub bearing s full of grease, you do not have to pull the whole front hub assembly to bits & repack with grease like most cars, so that many cars sent to workshops this job is left not done, but on the big Jag is easy as there is an obvious grease nipple there just to pump it full, how clever, on my two Caddy's you have to tear the whole front wheel assembly to pieces taking ages. These Jags are an engineer's car in their design & execution, not just a road commodity for just a few years use.

Welcome to X305 ownership! Needs throttle spindle bushes. Oiled sintered bronze flange bushing EF050806 takes a little trimming but will fit. Needs radiator mounts. Very common. Scotchcal 70205 1/8" silver stripe tape is the easiest way to restore engine cover stripes.

For the engine cover, a “Silver” Sharpie marker worked great for me. It’s basically a paint marker. Walmart sells them for like $3.

Those aluminum intake manifolds are absolutely beautiful. Something lost in modern cars with all the plastic fantastic covers on the engine bays is engines you can just open the hood and stare at for hours and admire like artwork.

On behalf of all who follow you. Wow, excellent choice. Having owned three Jaguars in the past its hard to explain why you drive one. Its not showing off like a Mercedes. Its pure class through and through. They are a different breed and when Ford got them in 1980's they put a lot of money into restoring the brand from Castle Bromwich. The XJ12 was the first V-12 in the US from Jaguar since 1979. New in 1995 they started at $77,000 so they were not cheap but well worth it. With 313hp and 352 pounds torque that big cat could hit 60 in under 7 seconds. The only complaint most have is the fuel mileage and if your worried about that you would have gotten a Hyundai. Beautiful, Beautiful.

My grandmother had that exact same year and engine but in silver. Met an unfortunate end when a beam in a parking garage fell down on it crushing the car. One of the few times i actually cried as she was going to give me the car when she wasn't able to drive anymore. She replaced it with a Corrolla S because her mechanic always said buy a toyota and she listened. It was fun and my mother has it now, but it wasnt a jag that for sure.

If she had to choose, I'd say she'd survive a crash in that Jaguar FAR better than the Jap plastic! Despite Jaguar's past bad reputation, my family panelbeaters (what us Aussies call bodywork repairs) always swore Jaguar body strength was as good as Volvo & Mercedes-Benz. High speed crashes in XJS coupés they repaired would've been written off by insurers if BMW, Audi, etc.......

When I worked as s contractor for Lucas in Birmingham UK back in the 90s I remember seeing rows of those instrument clusters under test in climatic test chambers. I also saw a pre-production XJ40 V12 in their workshop circa 1992.

Fantastic car, and that V12 is a great engine. You mentioned that the later V8 XJR had the 4L80 as well, however it actually has a Mercedes Benz 5 speed auto. I know this as I currently own a 2001 XJR and the box has Merc logos all over it. Great video and congratulations on that beautiful car

XJR had an AMG/Mercedes auto, normal XJs hat ZF auto boxes. ZF behind au 4.0 is bullet proof, the ZF behind the 3.2 are not. no pilot bearing and input shaft guiadance on the later.

A couple years ago here on YT, I watched a video of a guy who had taken one of these Jag V12's & "Hot-Rodded" it to where it was (according to him) putting out about 500 hp. He had installed it in a 32' Ford or a T-Bucket (can't recall what) & had stopped for fuel. It was such a work of art, that people kept coming over to see it & asking him about it. Being a Gearhead myself, I was impressed with the look of it myself! 👍

She is an absolute beauty Wizard. I own an '02 X400 X-Type in Champagne with fawn leather, stock wheels and with the same mileage (131,000KM). I bought the baby 2.1lt V6 FWD, I didn't want the 3.0lt AWD or the diesel. I, like you, enjoy the luxury ride as I'm 61 y.o and had my fair share of modified cars in my younger years. I don't drive it too often an I have a Hyundai Terracan 2.9 lt 4x4 as a daily. My Jaguar is in 100% original showroom condition which was a really nice surprise. I have fitted Sheep skin seat cover to the front seats to keep them immaculate, the rear seats have never been sat on. I'm the 2nd owner. The only problem with Jaguars here in Australia is the price for parts & services. Congratulations on a great purchase, many happy years of Jaguar driving.

Great video Wizard, you belong in a Jag! The X300 chassis Jaguars are one of the finest cars Jag ever made. Bullet proof straight six engines, the gorgeous V12 and the amazing supercharged XJR6 (the first supercharged Jag, and also available with a manual transmisson). The X300 brought a return to the classic looks of the 1960-70s series Jaguars and the best bit of all was that this was the first Jag developed under the reign of Ford. What that mean in practice is that the XJ40 got developed into the car it ought to have been and Ford also instilled some proper build quality standards. The X300 sits perfectly in that era of car that is modern but still simple enough for a home mechanic to get to grips with it. They are actually rugged cars if you keep up with the maintenance. My first X300 had nearly 300,000 miles on the clock and was still going strong when I sold it! Enjoy!!

I worked on one of these Back in the early 1990s, this XJ-12 was white, like this one it also had the Turbohydramatic 400, a Delco starter and two piece plugged up catalytic converters on dual exhaust. I replaced the bad starter, removed the four plugged up cat converters and serviced the auto transmission. The customer was amazed by the power and performance; he had never been truly happy with it, he was now! About ten days after he picked it up we got a visit from the AZ Highway Patrol asking if we had worked on it and, if we had "souped it up?" Nope, didn't need to be souped up, it's an XJ-12. The customer had gone out SR 180 toward the Grand Canyon and wrapped it around a tree, it was fatal, he was going about 112 MPH when he sailed completely off the highway, at night, and for years we saw the tree where he had wrecked it about twenty feet in the air. Drive responsibly folks.

Beautiful Jag. Only thing I would do. if possible would be to have the wheels rebalanced to have the wheel weights put in the inside.. would make for a cleaner look and they stick out on the wheels when you see them.

Absolutely Gorgeous Car, are you taking it racing?😂 Jaguar’s first foray into the world of V12 engines began in motorsport as early as 1951, with its 1964 XJ13 Le Mans race car eventually serving as the trickle-down technology source for its production cars. For the latter, this would begin with a 5.3L naturally-aspirated unit in the 1971 Jaguar E-Type and would even go on to be used by other automakers such as Daimler and Panther. An HE (or “high-efficiency”) version of this engine would be released in 1981 - featuring on the XJ12, XJ-S, and Daimler Double-Six - which improved fuel economy by almost 50% compared to its predecessor, without affecting performance. In its final iteration, the V12 would evolve into a 6.0L HE unit which produced as much as 333 hp and 365 lb-ft of torque. It was likely to be some variation of this engine which was initially being marketed for use on the Jaguar XJ220, before the British automaker controversially decided on a 3.5L twin-turbocharged V6 engine instead. The last Jaguar V12 engined was produced on April 17, 1997. I’m pretty sure the Jaguar V12 was voted the best engine in the world at some point, if you go on Harry’s garage KZbin page you will see He had an XJ12 coupe restored if I remember correctly the Engine in his car cost £22,000 to restore a lot of money but there againI see it not only as an engine but as a work of Art, congratulations on your new purchase and I hope you have many thousands of fabulous miles in the Jaguar, it’s certainly a stunner❤

Beautiful car. Congrats! I owned a V12 XJS and the engine was smooth as silk and had incredible torque. It was a great car. The only negative is the heat in the engine compartment baked all the rubber hoses. There were hoses connecting the injectors to the fuel rail in the XJS, one of which failed, causing an engine fire which totaled my car. My XJS was older so they may have changed the design in yours. Something you may want to check though.

I lost my BRG S3 v12 Sovereign to a loose clip on a fuel hose. Linear torque curve. Didn’t like Australian summer ( vapour locks and keeping cool). Air con always on because it also cooled fuel in engine bay. A magnificent touring car.

Fuel leaks from the fuel rail became a common issue on older V12's and owners now are encouraged to get the kit and replace all the hoses and seals.

I have loved Jaguars since the mid 60’s when my father bought a Mark 2 and it was to be our family car until the mid 70’s. I have owned four Jaguars myself including a 3.8 Mk 2. In Edinburgh in the 1960’s Jaguars we’re everywhere owned by the professional classes of the Scottish capital city.

Happy for you to have joined the club! My family had a 96 with the LWB when I was kid, purchased second hand, and unfortunately I doubt it’s among the 50 still running. But I now have the 96 Vanden plas, also mint, low miles, and it gets the care it deserves.

Absolutely beautiful.. I'm impressed that you know a good car when you see one.. my son and I are creating a full restomod on his 86 XJS V-12.. shaved body, lowered, custom headers, custom Mobeck MFI system, everything is either polished or chromed in the ER,,, all updated wiring, custom interior, sand blasted and powdered all suspension,, an original TWR body kit,, completely murdered out with jet black satin.. these V-12s where indestructible if maintained. A little massage on the engine could easily breathe 500hp. Don't let anyone tell you different. I've been a licensed technician for over 47 years and have worked on everything.. keep up the great service work..

Beautiful car, and a rare find with perfect color combination - congratulations to both of you. The burl walnut has dealt with some UV light, but there are several good options if you want to extract the panels and ship them for restoration.

I was in Joe Bouley's shop in Vero Beach Florida one day in 1991 when he had the engine and transmission from an XJS pulled out sitting on a wooden pallet because it had failed. It failed because the idiot owner drove it home with the coolant temperature pegged. I asked him about it and he said that the engine and GM turbo 400 transmission combination weighed over 900 pounds! Although the Jaguar V12 is made of aluminum, it is a MASSIVE engine and can be bored and stroked to over 9.4 liters or 573 cubic inches~ When the people at Jaguar designed this engine, they designed it more for smoothness, torque, and refinement. Not for all out horsepower. That engine with the right exhaust sounds incredible!

Jaguar had a really good reputation in the UK for reliability with the X350 family in particular. This Jag is beautiful- my uncle had a 1995 XJ Sport 3.2 and I drove it a few times - utterly beautiful, creamy and quick. This is luxury motoring - not a stupid new BMW 4-wheeled laptop. Very very nice one and they are indeed rare and this one is a gem. I own a series 3 ( last of the true William Lyons designed and built Jags ) and I have to say that I do much prefer the series 1, 2 and 3 inline 6 and V12's to these later X305 framed cars though undoubtedly the motor is better on the 6 litre and probably better reliability than the 5.3 v12. True, they ride just like a caddy but will just blow a caddy into the weeds on the twisties- a fantastic combination of ride and handling. Engine is fantastically tough and unkillable if not cooked but I see so many V12's now with small block V8 conversions because people are frightened of V12's which is tragic; it's actually vandalism. The V12 Jag was the fastest sedan in the world when it came out and for many years- 150 mph even today is pretty impressive let alone in the late 1960's. But very well done!

I can remember when the E type came out WOWWWW, what a storm that car caused. OK back to your Jag V-12. Do you know that when the XJ6 came out after a short time the French awarded it a top safety award. Now you must remember the French hate the British.... So this was really something special.

Ah, Wizard, your payment check was the knife and this video was the twist between my ribs. I stalked this car on Bob’s website for several weeks but couldn’t put the finances together. So glad you and Jennifer will get to enjoy it though. Last I checked my Volvo/Jaguar specialist had a rebuilt V-12 that was available. Perhaps it will get swapped out with the B230F in my 1991 Volvo 240 wagon.

Only the Vanden plas edition is better. I was caretaker of a rich lady's horse ranch in Colorado for 5 years and I had to put regular miles on her Jag as part of my job. The visits to the dealer for regular maintenance never cost less than $3,000. However, IMO, it's the classiest car on American roads... even classier than Hoovies old Caddy. Now you need a top hat, gold pocket watch, pipe, and tweed jacket to go along with your royal ride!

Congratulations of your lovely new car Mr. Wizard. The 6 litre models are a lot tidier under the bonnet than the early 5.3 versions, less of a plumber's nightmare to look at, and I happened to see a video of the same engine in one of the final XJS cars, which impressed me with its very long legged gearing, on recollection being about 33 MPH per 1000 RPM in top gear. Excellent pick car Wizard! My eye has always been attracted to the 96-97 Vanden Plas to me is the ultimate in a modern old school classic luxury car. I’m a 80s/90s BMW & Mercedes person but I would definitely snap up this style of Jag. I think this was a better progression after the series III XJ. It’s modern but has that old school class which disappeared entirely in the 1990s from all other luxury vehicles. No other Jag does it for me. People will disagree with me but the wheels make the car classy. Congrats on getting a new to you rare XJ12.

Nice ride wizard! The 1995 6cyl are actually VERY reliable. Frequently find them on CL with 250k+ miles. Also available - very rarely - with the 5 speed manual transmission!

Hi, wonderful short-wheelbase car you have there, offered only in 1995. If it hasn't been covered already, all the V8 XJRs had the Mercedes 5-speed auto box. It's the 6 cylinder XJRs which had the 4L80E.

Beautiful car! It really took me back to my first Jaguar- a 96 XJ6 Vanden Plas with the same interior color as yours. These certainly do have an amazing ride without sacrificing handling (at least in my opinion). I briefly had an XJR (99 model) as well, and while the stiffer suspension may assist with handling, I never had any complaints with the handling performance of the Vanden Plas (though with only around 245 hp with the 4.0 I6, perhaps I didn't push it as hard into the corners as my XJR and XKR). I, too, love the style of the X300/X305/X308 Jags more than the more recent models. I'd like to pick up another X308 XJR someday- or of course if I ever came across a unicorn like your X305. Enjoy the car- it certainly is a beauty!

So, the 95 is a short wheelbase. I had a 96. 96 and 97 XJ12's were long wheelbase only. I was in love with mine and miss it sooooo much. I hope you and Mrs. Wizard enjoy it at least half as much as I enjoyed mine. It was my daily and never once left me stranded.

What a coincidence I was only yesterday watching Harry's garage after his complete restoration of his 1978 Jaguar XJC V12 manual, what a beast, and after 15 years the motor looked similar. Being a manual the throaty roar at 6000rpm was a pleasure although I think Mrs Wizard would keep the windows shut.

I have been to Coventry UK and actually (as a guest) watched the craftsmen match the veneers for each individual car. So the ash tray cover has been replaced. Fabulous car - Looks marvellous - Enjoy.

Great, great cars, proper Jag V12 values backed by Ford money. Nothing much to be scared of with these as long as you have a specialist (which you are) to look after them, and the build quality is exemplary. In the UK this would have been badged as a Daimler Double Six doncha know.

Very true, sir...I have two VDP's , 2001 and 2002, both with 135K on clock. Had them both for almost 10 years, having bought them in quick succession at the time, each had 90K miles. They've been amazingly reliable...Ford definitely fixed a lot of glitches...the most reliable have been the electronics. Biggest repair: rebuilding the suspension on the 2002...cost me $5K...drives great now. Next on list, bearing going out on AC fan, also on 2002...other than that, just normal maintenance! Get compliments all the time...I keep 'em showroom always!

Utterly gorgeous... I am very jealous!! Comes from the best years of Jaguar with Ford showing them how to build cars properly! My X300 gave 10 years of wonderful motoring only asking for oil, new tyres and one exhaust box in that time... Your one has found it's 'forever home' I can tell! enjoy!

Beautiful car. Since you love Jags so much, why not learn how to pronounce the brand properly? It is not a Jag WWWAR, it is a Jag U AR, at least that is how the manufacturer pronounces it. Cheers from Canada. Great show, lovely car.

Beautiful machine you have. I used to own a 93 XJ-6 in the blue diamond color. The engine was solid and the ride was smooth as silk. Be aware that Ford may not have fixed the electrical issues on your model. Lucas Industries was simply incapable of engineering quality electrical connectors at the time. Keep an eye on the fuel pump connector at the pump itself. The fuel pump worked great, but the needle-thin connectors burn out. I ended up replacing the connector with a more heavy duty connector, and it did the trick. One thing for sure though, Jaguar makes some of the most beautiful and stylish cars in the world. My present Jag is an 05 XK-8, which is a dream to drive.

I am fortunate enough to own a 1997 Sovereign x300 Inline 6 I've had for 16 years or so, the interior is still holding up beautifully and it brings me immense joy. So glad a beautiful car like yours has found new owners who will enjoy it and care for it. Wishing you many thousands of great driving miles and memories with it.

I have a 1996 Daimler double six which is essentially the same car (long wheel base) and a more bespoke interior etc. It's a thing of beauty! Mine is spruce green with a dual tone parchment/tan interior. Looks very similar to BRG but a metallic finish. The great thing about these cars is they don't have marelli ignition systems and have a Nippon denso (spelling?) System that is great as it doesn't burn the car down! I bought mine about 2 years ago and it's in perfect condition with 50k miles. Unfortunately, you can't give them away! A real shame as they should be true classics.

I own one in Sapphire Blue, and I cannot part with it even though I own an XJ8 and an XKR coupe. Nothing feels like a 12. There's a guy in NY that converts Denso starters that weigh less and have more torque. I made the change and love it. The original starters give no warning before failure. I experienced this on my XJS 6.0 and the XJ12. The upper starter bolt is a 12 point so remember that when you need to change or replace. These are amazingly robust cars. Also, use only jiggle pin thermostats, they must bleed air in the cooling system.

Nice example! The 2001 XJR didn't have a GM box, they had the Mercedes box. Should have an LSD as well, whereas the V8 XJR`s didn't. If I were you, I`d rustproof the sills (not rockers on a Jag!), rear arches, under the screen rubbers, the front wings (wings, not fenders!) behind the wheels, under the splash shields + sill/A-Pillar behind there, & the scuttle panel under the plastic trim ASAP. 🥸

Good luck, a friend had a V12 convertible Jag. Electrical problems out the asshole. He drove around with a tarp because here in SC the top would go up and down some days and others it wouldn't work. We figure humidity was the problem? Best guess. His car was sweat on the interior, yours is crap compared to his and he bought it used. He bought it in 2002 for $14,000 if I remember right? Thought the depreciation was insane so it must be a good deal? Good luck with the power door locks. If I remember right the relays were made in Spain, that's a sign of quality right there.

Wizard, this car is a time machine ! Where has it been lurking all those years ? The lack of corrosion on the underside of your new Jaguar is quite astonishing, even for a low mileage car like this. Don't they throw salt on the roads in Kansas in winter ? It is a wonder that Ford, the owners of Jaguar at the time, allowed Jaguar to develop the V12 into a 6 litre and keep it in production for so long, because sales were never huge. Owning and running a V12 is something I would love to do here in the UK, but our petrol prices are so high in the UK and Europe that I could never use it the way I would want to, which would be long tours into Europe as well as long trips in Wales and Scotland. You mention the ride; this was probably the last XJ with the "Magic Carpet" ride of previous models. I had a 1980 XJ6 and much later, two of the aluminium XJ saloons made 2003-2009. The ride on the later cars was OK, but the ride was noticeably harsher than the old XJ. At the moment I have an XE. Maybe its time to go back to an XJ !

Jaguar was indeed owned by Ford at the time but fitting the V12 was an act of mutiny by Jaguar because there was fear that Ford were going to fit a V8 under the hood. In fact the XJ40 was designed initially so that only the six would fit but Jaguar decided to fit the V12 without Fords blessing and modded the engine bay and frame to suit.

David, I just hope your XJ12 is a lot more reliable than my 1992 one. It had only done 8,000 miles when I bought it, ex Japanese Embassy in London but it proved to be a nightmare of unreliability. Head gaskets, throttle potentiometer (twice), air con in the middle of a family holiday to Italy, fuel pumps, leak in the heater matrix, failure of pneumatic HVAC distribution actuators, fuel injector and so on. After three years I had had more than enough and bought a low mileage BMW 635 Highline instead.

You can fix the time clock display missing digits easily, just take it apart and clean the LCD contacts and when you put it back together you can put a piece of card or folded paper in behind to increase the pressure on it.

Yes, I also noticed the LCD failure. This is due to the lack of pressure between the PCB / Zebra Strip / LCD Screen Unit. I have been really successful in repairing these. Just use NalClips to increase the pressure, and to hold the whole Assembly together. Many LCD Screens fail in this way.

I have owned 4 BMW 750iL V12 cars and the reason why they sound so unique when they start is there is an oil pressure switch that prevents ignition until there is sufficient oil pressure.
