Today i'm heading out to do some Oregon Fall Chinook Salmon Fishing and i brought a few of my favorite salmon fishing spinners as well as my last twitching jig. I have two different salmon fishing setups, the first being my 9'4" Lamiglas Redline baitcasting rod with a Quantum Pulse baitcasting reel. I'm running 30lb braid on both rods with a 20lb fluorocarbon leader. I brought a big selection of the angling addict fishing co (AAFCO) salmon and steelhead spinners but have two colors in mind that i know have been producing fish lately. My other rod is a cheap 7' medium action rod that i picked up for $20. I've never fished with this rod before and considering it's size, if i manage to find myself a nice chinook salmon or coho salmon, im sure the fish will give me a run for my money.

This salmon fishing video was shot in the first week of October after a long stretch of nicer weather, lower river levels, and skiddish fish that are just waiting on a little rain to raise the river level so these salmon can finish their migration back up to the hatchery. Though i am out targeting coho, a lot of these pools that i will be fishing are holding a bunch of chinook salmon. The fall run on this river is a wild one and none of the chinook salmon can be kept. With that in mind, i know i have a good chance of hooking a chinook so i always try to have my pliers ready to go so i can get a quick release on the fish. Since most of these chinook will be in spawning mode, it is always best practice to land the fish as quick as possible and to do your best to keep it in the water as you remove the hook and get it released after a quick picture. I could tell that my first chinook was tired out by the time i released it so i didn't get a good shot of the fish, but i did get a good shot of the second fish since it was doing better. Normally i wouldn't take a native fish out of the water but this was one of the biggest chinook salmon i've ever caught while salmon fishing on a river. As you can see in the video, the fish was out of the water for about 3 seconds and was then safely released to go finish making some babies lol. If you haven't tried salmon fishing with twitching jigs, i highly advise giving a look. It is another great salmon fishing technique and could produce bites when other techniques aren't.
My next trip should be fishing one of our coastal tributaries for Coho and Chinook so stay tuned!

Henry Schmidt - indeed it is Henry, it has been an ongoing issue for almost 10 years now. All sustained from a wreck in Iraq in 2010. I appreciate the support. It’s because of that time in the military that I can now do what it is that I enjoy most. Luckily I was feeling good enough to get out and do some fishing. Hopefully I can get down to the coast for some chinook and coho while they are still in good numbers. Thanks for watching and again for the support

@Thomas Lunsford Thank You! Keep at it. It isn’t always easy or everyone would be catching fish. You can’t catch fish if you aren’t trying. It’s easy to get discouraged, I still have my days. The time will come.. the best advice I can give is do your homework. I became more consistent when I stopped spot chasing and started looking into what would make a good spot depending on the species, weather and water conditions, where we are time-wise in the run, among many other factors.... I say it’s luck when you have no clue what you are doing.. pick your spots wisely and fish techniques for that type of water. I don’t do the same thing every place I go.. you will get your fish! Spent the last 2 days on the rivers, Sandy and Clackamas, watching fish jump every couple minutes in front of me. Can't seem to get em to chomp down on anything. Devin Levitt - it’s pretty common for this time of the year when the river levels are still low and there’s so much pressure on the fish.. any chinook on both rivers are spawning so they don’t want much to do with you and the coho just kinda blast up river when they can. I’m interested to see how things look after this weekends rain.

@@AnglingAddictsPNW lol I can't blame you. On monday I spent a few hours in my favorite spot, a nice size coho jumping 20ft out from me every ~20 mins or so, and just refusing to bite. AWESOME, NIC! _WOOHOO!!_ I've been going to Barview, and mixing up casting for rockfish, lingcod, and salmon. No salmon, but damn, I've been watching countless boats pulling them in just a few tens of yards away in the channel. By the way, how fast should I retrieve spoons, and how fast should I retrieve spinners?

xyzct - it’s that time of the season.. there are a lot of salmon in the tidewaters right now. I have yet to target them from the jetty. I would just switch up the speeds and depths that you are retrieving but most chinook I’ve caught has been a very slow retrieve. You can see how slow some of those boats are trolling, granted not all of them are trolling spinners, I’m sure there are a few using herring. Honestly I have no clue what depth they go through the jetty at so I would just mix it up and see if you can find what works. I hope you have a net lol!! 😁

I am new to salmon fishing, and I'm REALLY struggling to find where the salmon are in the run. Any tips on how to find the general location of salmon in rivers like this one? I've been searching the internet for tips on about how to locate salmon (not find them in a spot, like actually finding the spots to fish), and nothing shows up. Please help!

@AnglingAddictsPNW
@AnglingAddictsPNW 3 жыл бұрын
Deon Cross - I don’t do a whole lot of twitching so I don’t really have a rod for it. Though after being reminded of how fun and effective it can be, I will be picking up a better rod soon. This was just a cheap Kunnan black water 7’ medium action rod. I will probably go with the same length and maybe a medium/heavy rod
