The 655-foot ship "Isolda" passed under the Aerial Lift Bridge as it arrived from Lake Superior in Duluth, MN! Many people waited for this ship to arrive and when it did there was a lot of action going on. The wind was gusting strong which had many regular surfers and kite surfers out on Lake Superior. It was such a cool and action-packed situation to watch this massive ship arrive with really skilled surfers catching big waves while both were being recorded together at the same time.
The ship has a powerful presence for sure. The bow on this ship was super impressive. It's a monster ship, that's all I have to say! I'm not sure which will impress you more during this video, the huge ship or the crazy cool surfers! You can enjoy them both!

That vessel is travelling very very light right now. When fully loaded only the blue will be visible on top of perhaps a foot of red paint. The bulbous bow on large ships reduces "porpoising" a bowup/stern down-stern up bow down when running to head or tail seas. Increases fuel economy significantly. Its funny how mid size yacht builders incorporated the bulbous bow design selling the same benefit. Truth is on vessels less than 400-500 ft with other than deep draft displacement hulls, bulbous bows are useless.

Do pilots get dispatched to all large vessels in this area like in NY harbor, and other places or do 'regular lakers' Like the Anderson that frequent Duluth get a pass?
@vibewithmike
@vibewithmike 9 ай бұрын
You’re absolutely right. The regular Great Lakes vessels Don’t have a pilot. The oceangoing vessels Do have a pilot. Here’s the company that provides that service here in Duluth. Again, awesome question! www.seaservicellc.com/

Now you have me thinking about ribs! Obviously, St. Louis ribs! Not every ocean going vessel has that type of bow, but the ones that do actually have better efficiency. Take a look at the information about this type of bow. It’s really cool and fascinating. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bulbous_bow
