⚓️Dramatic Duel: 2 Famous Ships - 1 Bridge Lift in Duluth, MN

This was one of the rarest events from a ship-watching standpoint in Duluth, and frankly, I don't think this has ever happened before. The two most popular Great Lakes ships arrived only a few hundred feet apart under a moonlight sky from Lake Superior under the Aerial Lift Bridge in Duluth, MN. The 1013-foot ship Paul R. Tregurtha (largest on the Great Lakes) and the 767-foot ship Arthur. M. Anderson (the most historic vessel on the Great Lakes) were only hundreds of feet from each other as both went under the Aerial Lift Bridge, back-to-back.
What makes these ship arrivals even more impressive is that the Aerial Lift Bridge only lifted a single time for both ships, so they shared the same lift! The night sky almost looked like it was painted by an artist with that moon shining down on Lake Superior.
I take you through the events from start to finish by providing facts about both ships, weather conditions, and other interesting views from around the ship canal, so you can enjoy this unique ship event to the max!
Both ships blasted a horn salute that went over 100 decibels! I knew before these ships arrived it would be the most incredible ship video I recorded up to this point, and I wasn't wrong! It was so fun watching this happen!
Information about the ship Paul R. Tregurtha: en.m.wikipedia...
More information about the ship Arthur M Anderson: en.wikipedia.o...

Mike, I'm so glad you could witness this most unique and rare 2 ship arrival using with just one lift. And not just any ships. The most famous old school classic laker, and one of the most well loved 1000 footer. ...the largest ship on the Great Lakes. The weather was great. The moon only helped create the neat atmosphere! Starting at 3:35 it was funny to watch that lady say to her hubby "I'm not walking in that water. You go right ahead". Beginning at 6:10, we get a really nice view of the flying bridge. Night helps bring out all the equipment. I've posted this before, but thought it appropriate to post again for any new boatnerds. I grouped the items by category. Thanks for producing this video. It was stupendous! Common Devices/Features found on the Flying Bridge. Also called the Monkey Bridge. This area is the upper most level (roof) of the pilot house. VDR capsule (Voyage data recorder. Like 'Little Black Box' on an airplane) AIS Tx/Rx antennae (Automatic identification systems - transmitting and receiving) Satellite C/F77 Tx/Rx antennae, VSAT (TV, telephone, facsimile, data services, Internet) Miscellaneous Antennae (VHF, SSB, possibly even CB, other line of sight radios) Automatic Radio Direction Finder Antenna (Loop) Magnetic compass (inside fiberglass dome) Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) Antennae DGPS precision position finding equipment Radar scanner(s) attached to the radar mast Radar Reflector Anemometer (wind speed), Weather vanes (Wind direction), Temp Sensors Sound Reception Device Loudhailer speaker/horn Ship bell/s Ship whistle/s/horns Multiple searchlights Daylight Signaling Lamp General area lights The mast leading up to the ‘Christmas Tree’ (navigation lights) Lightning Rod called dissipator/s Security Cameras Video Cameras (Navigation/Docking Assist) Various halyards (ropes) connected to the yardarm (cross posts) to hoist flags Ship Nameplate

Offroad, thanks for stopping by to watch the video. I think you’ll really like learning more about Duluth and the ships. Hands-down the best documentaries I’ve ever watched about Duluth are these two, Lost Duluth 1 & Lost Duluth 2. If you want to learn about the ship canal start at exactly 19:33 in Lost Duluth 1. I have linked these videos below for you. These documentaries tell the whole story of Duluth’s beginning and shipping industry, it’s absolutely fascinating with the photos and videos. Hello Mike watching this on twofer Tuesday here in cold rainy Bismarck. I guess these two are probably ranked 1 & #2 in popularity on the laker vessels chart. Big Hoss is the biggest vessel on the lakes, and the Anderson’s historical respect is off the charts. Your photography is really beautiful showing the skyline of Dtown at nite. I wanted to do something completely different from the other channels. I approach my videos like a live news report, so there's always talking like a live reporter does. Hello, I'm using my wife's KZbin channel. My name is Stuart. I grew up about five blocks from the East River in Queens in New York which led to the Long Island sound. I saw many a ship go by when I was at the beach or fishing. I've never seen your channel before until I think it was today. He got some great videos. I didn't know that that one ship was 1,013 ft long what do they ship in these ships? I know you said Cole and something called techononic pellets or something okay just I love your channel. Very interesting. I live in Naples Florida now grew up in Queens in New York and New York City. Great stuff. Great stuff.

Sixteen thousand ton cargo capacity, incredible! What many people not of the martime world don't realize is this, hulls come with different drafts, (dept below water) different shapes ,full displacement hull, semi displacement hull etc. Ships that are capable of transporting massive amounts of weight such as sixteen thousand tons are full displacement hulls with deep drafts and usually large in size. Full displacement for reasons that the ship was designed for. The word displacement, 'displace' something, this, that or... In ships it means the draft displacement of water by weight, meaning, the amount of water replaced by the ships hull that's below the surface of the water known as the ships draft, must not exceed the weight of the ship and all potential cargo the ship will transport to keep the ship afloat. If that displacement of the entirety in weight of ship and cargo is more than displacement of water in weight, the ship can't stay afloat, the ship will sink! 🧐

@@vibewithmike Thank you for the comment Mike. Just add this to the comment, weight between salt water and fresh water isn't equal in weight. Fresh water is heavier. That said, cold Pacific Ocean salt water weight is not the same in weight of warmer Atlantic Ocean salt water! This being the reason why where the two oceans meet, the two salt waters don't mix, infiltrate into the other, thus keeping one ocean colder than the other ocean. Colder Pacific Ocean salt water will submerge below the lighter Atlantic Ocean salt water, then begin to disipate within a transitional zone. All so critical in designing of ships and their intended use will be. I truly loved that part of your history lesson in the telling of the Anderson's effort to assist the Edmond Fitzgerald in that ship's desperate need of assistance. It's my understanding, however, it may not be accurate, the Anderson was a sister ship in design to the Edmond Fitzgerald. Curious to know if this to be true. Imagine if so, then we all in a way through your lense, just witnessed something very unique indeed, especially knowing decades have now passed since the tragedy of that tragic stormy night. To see a ship of its kind to the Edmond Fitzgerald in a new century enter the Deluth MN. harbour. Love all your videos of these very special vessels that surface the heavy waters of the greatest lakes on earth, The Great Lakes! 🥸

Hey John. Good stuff to ponder. I love this type of activity. The PRT can carry up to 68,000 gross tons of taconite pellets or 71,000 net tons of coal. The Anderson 23,000 tons of ore. My mind goes hay wire trying to fathom this amount!
