So glad the missing teen was found. The family must be beyond relieved! Questions, though, about how this boy left the ship as an unaccompanied minor, remain.

When my grandson cruised with me I noticed that when his card was scanned to get off the ship at a port my photo appeared on the monitor next to his. I don't remember which cruise line.

Fortunately, the teenager went missing in the EU. As for these cities voting to limit or ban cruisers, don't go where you're not wanted.

My mother was from Rome Italy. My family sailed from NYC to Naples Italy in July of 1963 to visit my mother's family, on the Italian Lines Cristoforo Colombo. The crossing took 8 days. The weather was beautiful and the seas were calm. In October of that year we sailed Le Havre France to New York City on the SS United States. The crossing took 4 1/2 days, one day longer than the record breaking crossing. The seas were very rough in the north Atlantic ocean. The 99ship was heaving up and down like a runaway elevator for most of the crossing. Here are some actual facts about the SS United Sates, not Don's mostly erroneous information. The SS United States was not a 'cruise ship'. It was an ocean liner, built to go anywhere in the world in any conditions. I guarantee you that no modern cruise ship would have been in the north Atlantic at that time of year in the conditions we were in when I made the crossing, let alone at the speed we were traveling. Today's cruise passengers would never tolerate such conditions such a sea state. Nor could modern cruise ships sail at such a speed in those conditions safely. The SS United States was 990' long and 53,000 gross tons. The ship could carry 1928 passengers and 1,044 crew. The top speed during sea trials was 38.32 knots (44 mph). The ship normally cruised at 30 knots (35 mph) and the top speed was claimed to be 43 knots (49 mph). Due to it's capability to be a troop ship the top speed was classified information. While a beautiful and fast ship the SS United states was not luxurious. It was functional. The US government paid about half of the cost for the construction ship. In the event of another large scale war the plan was to convert the SS United States into a troop ship which was one of the main reasons for its high speed. Because of the danger of sailing in wartime fire on the ship was a big concern. So the only wood on the SS United States was the grand piano in the ballroom and the butcher block in the galley. The rest of the ship was constructed of steel, aluminum and other non-flammable materials. There were some decorations but they were minimal. The tourist class dining room was ordinary, the first class dining room was a little nicer. There were no other dining options. The were tourist and first class bars/lounges, a small ballroom and a movie theater. There was a small indoor pool on the ship. Those things and bingo were the extent of the entertainment on board. The SS United States started regular transatlantic service in 1952. Regular transatlantic airline passenger service started shortly after the end of WWII in 1945. Propeller planes took up to 15 hours to make the trip. The first passenger jet service started in 1958. The SS United States made it's last transatlantic sailing in 1968. By then jet service was much faster and cheaper and the demand for passenger ocean liner travel was on the decline. It will take 1os of millions of dollars to keep the SS United States in any kind of reasonable condition. The entire interior has been completely stripped. Some things are in museums, some things were sold, the rest were thrown out. Who is going to pay for that? Even to preserve and maintain the empty hulk would cost a huge some of money. If the ship would ever sail again it would cost hundreds of millions to make it ready. Some years ago a group was going to buy the ship and renovate it to once again carry passengers. However their plan fell through and it's just as well. In order to carry more passengers their planned alterations to the ship would have ruined her beautiful and graceful lines. It is a terrible shame that a once proud ship has been rusting away for years. It still holds the Blue Ribband for the fastest passenger ship crossing from the US to Europe. The sad reality is that there is no reasonably economical way to restore the ship in any meaningful way. The best thing to do is scrap the once beautiful and proud iconic and historic ship rather than let it rot away tied to a pier until it sinks. I was fortunate enough to sail on the ship and I have wonderful memories of sailing back to the US from Europe is spite of the rough crossing. It breaks my heart to see the ship in it's current condition.

Thank you for this beautiful comment. Perhaps someone should put together a book with people’s memories of the United States to serve as its memorial. I live in Newport News, Virginia, close to The Mariner’s Museum (what i think is the largest museum devoted to ships in North America). It has a huge room full of models of great ocean liners (including the United States) and warships. Their big project is restoring the Monitor from the Civil War. I know they have a model of the United States and it would be a dream to see it restored and moored in the James River on the museum grounds.

@@birbluv9595 You're welcome and thank you for the nice comment. I was 8 years old in 1963 and making the trip to Europe and back on a ship left a lasting impression on my young mind. It made me realize that the world was a big place and instilled a love of travel in me that never went away. I made 2 more trips to Italy via airplane before I graduated from high school. I was in the Army for 8 years and served in Germany, Japan, and the US. After my Army service I worked in Korea and Germany as a civilian for the Army. In 2006 while in Germany I met a Polish woman. We got married and I left government service and moved to Poland where I currently live. I've spent 32 of my 68 years of life living in foreign countries. It all started with that trip to Europe in 1963. I have a degenerative neuro-muscular disease and I can't travel anymore. I'm glad I got to see a good part of the world while I could. Now I do all of my traveling via the internet.

Preserving a giant ship is a giant sinkhole for money. Queen Mary is an example. The city spent close to a billion dollars over the last 50 years. They tried multiple times to earn money from the ship but failed (even Disney tried but failed to make profit from QM). Cities seeing that huge expense won’t want to repeat the mistake by adoptingthe SS United States.

I’m so glad that young man was found I guessed and was hoping he’d be with somebody from the gaming community maybe a little bit older than him, but not mature enough to realise that he was 14 and needed to stay with his family, or he’d lied about his age and they believed him. At least it looks like nothing bad has happened to him and he was genuinely meeting online friends, that were genuine friends and not bad people, lucky though really!

Not sure of his age but their policy is 16 and older can debark without a parent or guardian. Under 16 a parent (or someone over the age of 25, unless they are married then 21 listed in a cabin or linked cabin) would have had to be scanned with them at that time to debark. I’ve had this multiple times with my teenagers and had to look up the policies.

...doesn't look like you've looked into it much. Aydin had arranged to meet an older teenager and perhaps others he had met online gaming. Police were able to triangulate his location due to his cell phone. German police are convinced there is no evidence that he was abducted or that any crime took place, although comments from family seem to still push this narrative. Of course, a boy missing 2.5 days presumably staying with another gamer or group of them raises even more questions we likely will never know the answers to.

On the United States: other option would be for US government to take it over and pay for renovations and have some city offer to host it as a tourist attraction. (hence city pays dock fees). Sinking the ship would cost a lot as the ship needs to be "cleaned" of any nefarious materials, chemicals, fuels etc. You can't just punch a few holes and let it go down.

SS United States is an ocean liner that needs to be moved and preserved as a museum of history. The same way that they are preserving the Queen Mary 1 in Long Beach and restoring it, they should find a way to do that with the SS United States.
