With all the outcry about weight, nobody sane would lock themselves in a garage with ICE engine running. It is a very tangible proof that those engines are not enhancing our air… it’s time to move on and innovate. EVs with conventional gearbox and clutch for enthusiasts? Why not, there are custom cars already. Range anxiety? Who says you need to drive 500 miles to your favorite back road? The new ways will need adjusting but also will bring a new experience. There will be used cars for those who enjoy the smell of leader fuel…

Porsche is targeting 3,500lbs for the EV Boxster. So the Miata will definitely be able to come in under that. Probably by a lot. That said, the loss of the manual transmission would be a major downer no matter what it weighs.
@David_Journey

@@bearclaw5115 Mazda already has an EV mode in CX-90 PHEV that is using the conventional automatic transmission as part of propulsion. I don't see why it would be hard to do the same with a manual transmission. You can see custom VW Bug EV builds with shifted transmission on KZbin. Of course these one offs come with fine print.

Reminds me of when the Ford Model T was new, many of the horse owners said it was terrible and would never sell more than horses. Of course, you can still buy a horse to ride, even though only a tiny percentage do. I am guessing we will still see some new gasoline cars in 50 years, but a lot less than now as the electric motors, batteries and public chargers get better and more mass produced. Rent a minivan, the extra weight and long wheelbase make it nice to drive in a way, even though it is the opposite of a light, short wheelbase MX-5 Miata. To really go light and short, a bicycle and motorcycle beat the Miata and with a more open interior. They are worse for cold, hot or rainy weather. Or for crash safety.

It will be a big challenge for mazda to do a lightweight electric miata. What I enjoy the most with mine is the sound of the motor, and the chassis. I tried a ND 2 days ago and thought it was litterally the same car as my NA with some upgrades the no doubts on Mazda doing great things with the NE chassis. As a NA owner decades ago, my personal powertrain preference for the upcoming NE is a moderately updated 1.5 Skyactiv G with PHEV tech. Here's why: 1) Both are currently in production already so relatively low development $ and reliability risks....so NE price range won't hv to be Tesla roadster territory if it's going full BEV instead. 2) The 1.5 has been an option since the birth of ND(except for N.American mkt). I rented 1 in Okinawa 5yrs ago and it was such a sweet revving little engine that eventually formed the basis of the recently updated 2.0 on ND2 for sale in the U.S. Retaining this for NE will preserve the nearly lengendary manual shift experience which is the core reason most buyers would still buy a Miata/MX5 instead of another SUV/Crossover or BEV these days. 3) Mazda PHEV tech is indeed brand new but in production now for CX60/90 and imminently for CX80/70. With their combined production volume over the nex 3~4yrs, Mazda should be able to identify+fix any bugs on this new system by 2027~28 when NE debut. 4) Mazda's 2.5 PHEV in production today makes 323hp. I estimate a 1.5 PHEV version will make around 60% of that at about 193hp...not bad and still more than today's ND2. Plus of course reasonable pure EV range for the daily commute. 5) Personally, I still view PHEV tech as more realistic than BOTH pure BEV and pure ICE(Internal Combustion) for the medium term future(i.e. before 2040) given various unresolved ongoing issues re battery raw materials +charging infrastucture/power grid energy source on 1 hand and clear hostility against ICE by many regulators worldwide on the other hand. My only concern for a NE 1.5 PHEV is weight. The current ND 1.5 weights only around 1,000kg/2,200lbs while the CX90 2.5 PHEV weights a whopping 2,344kg/5,157lbs. I'm in the camp of - Mazda has no point to continue Miata/MX5 production if its weight ever exceeds 1,200kg regardless of whether it's BEV or PHEV or remains as ICE.

My reading out of this is that we don't know anything til we will know. Seriously, this is true guessing by a Japanese mag as have done many others before. Yes, the ND FL is apparently coming along and while we have seen some changes on the exterior in camou, we still don't know the final look. Also, other Japanese mags are talking about a chat with senior developers from Mazda that already the ND FL will have some kind of mild-hybrid built in to be in line with the 2025 EU regulations. They are already using the technology in some other models on the market. In fact, the developer talked about getting this done in the smaller engine first and the 2l soon to follow. If this was the case, I doubt we will see an NF coming up before at least 2027 or 2028. Which would then be full BEV and in line with Mazdas overall strategy of electrification. Bottom line, to me, the above timeline would make absolute sense. But again, all guessing at the moment.

I agree, except it's not true. Mazda does have a choice and I would not put it past them to keep it fully internal combustion without any electrification. If any company has the internal culture and will to do it, it's Mazda. The Miata accounts for such a tiny percentage of overall Mazda sales, that I think they can get away with no electrification, or a very mild hybrid system at the worst.

I'm also torn about the NE. I currently own an NA Miata and a Tesla Model 3 - the best of both worlds. I'll drive my Miata when I want to row through the gears, and I'll drive my Tesla when I want to be the quickest car on the road. If they could combine both, they'd hit a home run.

In Ecuador where I now live, most models from the best car manufacturers are not available here. However, there are many Chinese manufacturers, so many, most you've never heard of. Except Mazda. The best cars on the road here in Ecuador that are available and affordable are Mazda CX 3 & CX 5. Sadly the Miata isn't available, but that's actually a good thing because the roads suck, bad.

Happy with my ND2 purchase having seen this ND3 & NE info. The best infotainment upgrade would be to get rid of that damn ugly LCD glued to the dash - spoiling the lines of the cockpit. Maybe make it popup for when nav is required. Otherwise a minimalist clean look would be better. The existing infotainment system is slow but basically works OK (yes it already has wireless carplay). The most common operation I do is settings/screen-off - which I can do with the rotary control without even looking at that damn ugly screen.

I think Mazda has a huge advantage in the PHEV game with that rotary range extender. Huge batteries are really dumb but so is hauling around a big, heavy piston engine when it isn't even being used. So if you can have a battery of adequate size for most drives for most people and have the smallest, lightest possible range extender for those odd longer hauls, that is a winning formula in my eyes. Range extender use for the rotary is perfect as it won't be used super often so the seals will likely last the life of the vehicle, rotaries are more efficient at a constant RPM, and of course that sweet power to weight ratio is hard to beat. I want to see Mazda take that powertrain and put it in more of their vehicles, even the NE. I think it has huge mass market potential.

NE Miata will have an axial flux motor that is 220hp and 250tq that is 30% lighter than a Tesla Model 3 radial flux motor, and it will have CATL's new LFP battery that can charge by 250 miles in 10 minutes and get 435 miles of range, but it will be a scaled down version of this battery with less range in order to be lighter. They are targeting a 40-45kWh pack with 250 miles of range at a weight of 2600lbs. Based on the axial flux motor having a 8k rpm redline versus the Tesla having a 18k-22k redline , the NE will have a three speed manual gearbox.

@antoinelee-thomas9536 Жыл бұрын
I can't see the NE Miata being fully battery electric. That would be way too soon. However, if it does become battery electric, it comes as an optional trim, not a standard choice. Remember, the Honda CRZ had a hybrid with a manual transmission, and the 7th gen 2005 Honda Civic had a hybrid with manual transmission. Hybrid technology is far more vastly improved. Even if the hybrid technology for an NE gen Miata had a 48V mild hybrid with a gas engine and paired to a manual transmission to keep it lightweight, it's not out of the question and definitely doable. Mazda needs to take a page out of Honda's playbook and figure out how Honda did it with the CRZ and 2005 Honda Civic Gas+Hybrid cars. As far as the ND3 goes, this would be known as a secondary refresh. If I'm being honest, Mazda should be able to squeeze out another 19-24hp to get 200-205hp out of that engine they're using. Some people want a turbocharged MX-5 Miata. Mazda hasn't done a turbo Miata since the NB gen. I'm not expecting that kind of radical change under the hood of the ND3. Just as an idea, what Mazda could do is make the NE gen Miata with 48V mild hybrid system with a turbocharger paired to a manual transmission. If you want to keep some sort of purity of an internal combustion engine in the Miata, you do the next gen NE MX-5 Miata like that.

I think the ND3 Miata will be the last truly epic, truly great Miata. IMO all they need to do is fix the glitchy infotainment system (my 2016 randomly bricked itself for no apparent reason), offer two or three new exterior colors, and add an option for a beige or tan soft top and interior. That would be the Miata to end all Miatas for me personally.

Hopefully the NE has port injection with direct injection now....the ND being direct injection only will keep me away for sure, and having EPS on top of that does not make it more appetizing. Many cars that have EPS can easily be converted to a manual steering rack, but they purposefully designed the ND Miata in a way where it could not be without a ton of work.

Not really a fan of the bar on the nd3 render. Breaks up the flow in an awkward way and looks too much like the "chrome" strip on the back of the old mazda6 and cx-9: which seemed like a cheap faux garnish rather than a cohesive design element and didn't match the rest of those excellent designs. I'm ok with the front, but past designs have a body colored strip under the grille and it seems like an odd departure to have a "bottomless" grille like a Camaro ZL1 or Lexus maw. But a tech/interior update on the refresh would be welcome
