Last and only time I was in Fleetwood was as a schoolboy in about 1973, (aged 12) We we travelled up from Birmingham to play football against some local school. We got battered but that didn’t matter, we were at the seaside. The two things I remember vividly are, eating Lancashire hot pot for the first time in the school canteen. (I thought it was ok but many of my brummie mates thought this ‘alien’ food was horrible. (sorry if we were rude or ungrateful!) The other thing was we had a tour of the Fleetwood docks. What an eye opener that was for me. Really fascinating and I was blown away by a truly enormous flat fish, no idea the species. Pity the industry has gone. Thanks for the memories Fleetwood.

Went to Knott.End once, everything was closed. However, it was a visit with one of my sadly departed brother in laws. Brings a smile to my face picturing him eating a giant chocolate eclair in Fleetwood. He was a big lad and got some funny looks as he chomped on the cake. Happy days.

That's not a bad fare across the Wyre to Knott End, Stephen. The surprising thing is that you pay in real money too - cash! The boat is a little gem as well. Many thanks for showing us this trip over.

I have never been across but then again I guess I would need an excuse to want to go to Knott-End. On the rare occasion where I have considered making the trip it was usually out-of-season or a low-tide. Maybe I could take the tram up to Fleetwood from North Shore, make the crossing and then get a bus (2c) back to Blackpool via Preesall, Hambleton, Shard Bridge, Poulton etc. Twenty years ago I worked as a clippy on the old bone-shakers. How many times did I stand on the tram stop on the Esplanade and look across promising myself... We will go one day, course we will... course we will

The sandbar is thought by local historians to be displaced sand from Blackpool north shore. Back in the 1800s, there was a demand for building materials such as pebble rocks, which can be seen cemented into boundary walls, as well as earlier cottage walls and farmhouses / barns. These pebble rocks were obtained by escavating the cliff edges around Blackpool north shore, and subsequently loosened the sand in that area. The tide carried that loose sand up north and it is thought to be the Fleetwood / Knotg End sandbar, as it coincudes with shipping records of when the sandbar first appeared, and when the time period that pebble rocks were used for construction materials.

This brings back memories of my Grandma, in the 1960's Grandma used to take either my sister Sue or myself on the tram to Fleetwood and then across the ferry to Knott End for a frothy coffee, milkshake or a bottle of Coca Cola at the very same cafe as Stephen the presenter visits on his video. Grandma would never take to two of us together because Susan didn't know how to behave (she still doesn't). It used to feel like we were going around the world when in fact it was only a 1 mile walk from home to the promenade at Harrowside and then an 11 mile Tram ride to Fleetwood and then 1,000ft across the River Wyre on the ferry to the cafe. I don't remember the water ever being as calm as it was on this video and I'm sure all the seating was open to the weather because it was a smaller ferry and I don't remember it having any type of shelter. Happy times ...

I am not surprised that you've lived in Blackpool all your life Steve, and have never been on the Knott End Ferry until you made this video. Because you can go anytime, you usually don't. I was on it once years ago but since I moved up to Blackpool last August, I keep saying, I must go on the Knott End Ferry and so far I haven't. I love the Fylde Coast and I love a good boat trip. But unfortunately the only boat trip I know of, on the Fylde Coast is the Knott End Ferry. As lovely as it is, it is very short. Great video Steve. Xxx
