I ordered a fold up umbrella, so maybe 8 inches tall come in a box that was 6ft 5 inches high and wouldn't actually go through my front door without some twister like movements. I also had a concealer stick the size of my index finger come in a 18x20x8 inch box, with accompanying bubble wrap, paper and everything else. This is a poor example, but sometimes the HUGE boxes they send for tiny products are ridiculous. Tissues, that's another one. We order tissues from superdrug (seriously, how damaged can a box of tissues get en route?) Come in a box as big as half my kitchen table. Sometimes it really is silly.

This case is complicated. How should Amazon proceed here? Pack the item into a bigger box that will have less risk that item is damaged? Or use a smaller box that is just on the cusp - greater risk that item is damaged. The cost in packaging materials and shipping is probably $0.10 to Amazon - IF that. But it the item arrives damaged - then someone has to pay for it - and the damaged item goes to the landfill. So spending $0.10 on packaging that is biodegradable and recyclable - is the better deal all around - as opposed to chucking the damaged goods into the landfill. I had am happy to see the brown paper packing. Here in use Amazon uses plastic bags full of air - which maybe be cheaper to ship and use less fuel (good) but results in tons of plastic bags going to landfill.

Every package from Amazon is wAy larger than it needs to be. My 4 ft Christmas tree arrived in a refrigerator-size box with a 6ft strip of paper floating around in there for padding(?). They could've just slapped a shipping label onto the tree box as it had no markings on it whatsoever. A 5-ounce box of fish food was packed into a 4ftx4ft box with no padding, the list goes on

Most of the time the Amazon boxes are excessive. I order a small thin book and it will often be in a box about 20 times the size of the book. I am certain they have considered all the options for the size / padding etc and the efficiency and time to process the order, just purely cramming it in and hoping it ok is probably quite time wasting. I always re-use the cardboard sent but sometimes the empty space inside the box is a surprise. His programmes are always interesting though

I have just received a box 102 times larger than the item enclosed - together with brown paper of course. Gross wastage when the item could simply have been placed in a padded envelope. Amazon should be prosecuted for creating waste.

A victory for common sense? People prefer their goods to arrive undamaged. Is Hugh even slightly relative nowadays? Who takes notice of foolish logic? I mean apart from the Guardian readers.

You do have to admit that sometimes shipped items come in a ridiculously large box with ridiculous amounts of wadded paper or polystyrene.

GetBentley Yea, I've had some items come in a rather large box making me think what on earth did I order haha!

You would want it in a tighter box realistically so the object can move as one. Just as important though is the padding they use.

*Hugh here represents everything that’s wrong with the knee-jerk ecomentalist movement:* You think you’re doing the right “common sense” thing but actually, you’re doing the complete opposite! Much like with a container ship, sophisticated computer software determines how every package can be ‘Tetrised’ together for maximum efficiency inside a truck, ensuring no space is wasted and damage is at a minimum. Remember, if any package is damaged and replaced you’ve just doubled the carbon footprint (including its manufacture). So in essence, it may sacrifice the environmental impact of a single item (such as here) for the lesser impact overall. Total Moron.

Isn't it just fine if we recycle the packaging at home? Maybe they can use recycled material for the packaging they use if they dont use it already? interesting to see inside amazon factory though
@EForrest888 жыл бұрын
but recycling takes time, money and energy, so if you can recycled smaller amounts that do the same job as larger packaging, that's always a benefit. Plus a lot of recycled stuff can only be put to certain uses.

Yes, lets force the packer spend an extra 1-2 minutes finding a slightly smaller box instead of using the recommended size. Somehow, that loss of 1-2 minutes is perfectly offset by using a box that is 20% smaller. Furthermore, Amazon is always about shipping cheaper, faster, and better. They would save money if and when they use smaller boxes. I have no doubt their own analysts have looked at smaller boxes and determined its not as efficient as Hugh claims it to be.

What I am mad about is that Amazon is sending me orders in comfy envolopes with bubbled padding glued to the I side of the envelope. Plastic and Paper. Two different recyclable materials. What does this mean? They are making this impossible to separate the two for people at a recycling plant to separate the plastic from the paper. From the difficulty doing it I am encountering is that they would just throw this in the trash because it takes too long to separate.

Hugh clearly isn't listening. Just because it physically fits in the box doesn't mean the box is big enough because the item may get damaged and sending out a second item would be more wasteful.
