I have the GM36 verion of this amp, the first thing i did after a few hours of use was to change the original Chinese tubes with a full set of JJ's including a matched pair for the output stage. These amps were not cheap when new, and still command high prices as used ones. Great amps, but very tube fussy.

@@12voltvids That i can believe, my GM36 also runs very hot even at low volume which doen't bode well for a trouble free life. Add to this that H&K no longer support these amps, so if you need oem parts then you are stuffed. Compared to other valve amps, these have what i call a "Hi-Fi" type of sound and are not suited to all genres of music.

Hi, the somewhat bulging capacitor at the top is going to cause problems, I would replace it, I wouldn't risk a leak especially if it reaches the PCB somehow, with these modern amplifiers a bad capacitor can cause not only noise problems, but also make them stop working.

How about becoming a lead guitar for Rush or BTO (two of my favorite bands, and they are from Canada). Our shop used to get Raytheon tubes, but they were crap (so were Radio Shack ones). We went back to RCA and Sylvania. (TV tubes). Audio was another story, we used premium tubes for those repairs (Mullard, Gold Lion etc).

Nope not going to happen here. Perhaps once I retire I will pick up the old axe and shake off the rust. Get the fingers landing on the fretboard where the brain tells them to go but they have a mind of their own at the moment. Yes with practice it cones back. I last played probably 20 years ago and basically did that for a few months when I was out of work for 5 months in an ugly labour dispute at the phone company. So I had plenty of down time as I wasn't doing repairs either. That was right when I got out of the business and changed jobs. The last thing I was interested in was fixing electronics. I was an OK player when I was a kid, but traded my old strat for a dirt bike when I was 14. Didn't pick it again till my kids were taking guitar in school. I'll pick it up again some day. Great way to kill time.

If you run a tube amp without load, the highest voltages induced in the output transformer will be in the primary, and cause flash-over, as you surely meant. Never run without a load

@drrick8839 he took it away ever put a meter across the secondary with no load? Even with very low output the voltage will escalate very quickly. Years ago I got the shock of my life from the speaker terminals when changing a speaker. I put the meter across the open transformer and there was several hundred volts across it. Under no load that energy goes back into the primary. Arc over can occur in either the primary or secondary.

About five mins by the sound of it, why embarass yourself, with a broken patch cord and a guitar that isnt set up, just put a test signal into the damn thing like proper guitar techs do 😂

I started playing when I was 8. Played when I was in school. Also played saxophone and clarinet. Picked up the bass when I was a teen. Haven't played much lately. I have an acoustic, electric and a j bass. About 20 years ago I picked it up again and started practicing but got busy and the guitars just sit in the corner. I'll probably pick them up again when I retire and have lots of spare time.

I haven't played in 20 years. That old strat is so far out of tune! The strings are probably 30 years old.
