Fond memories. In the middle 80's I commuted to Reading from Guildford (horrible 3 car dmu). But the highlight was in the summer, catching the Poole to Portsmouth Harbour around 7pm ish. Non stop from Reading to Guildford all with a class 47. Magical.

Excellent footage ! I was at Reading Uni during the early '90s, so would most likely not have been _that_ far from the station when this film was taken. I often used to Reading - Paddington service, which was usually HSTs, with often 2 or 3 sitting at the station London or West bound. Occasionally, I'd get a Class 47 and on one occasion, I remember getting on one with Mk1 carriages which were corridor units. Even back then I was surprised that corridor Mk1s were still in use.

The Brush Sultzer 2750s as we called them in the 60s were always my favourite from my days as a fireman at Crewe before transferring to Old Oak Common , I left the railways in 1975 because the shifts were brutal but I’ve always retained my love of the footplate and the great men I worked with …I started in the days of steam and Crewe south sheds being one of the last steam depots, starting as an engine cleaner with about 10 of us cleaning steam locos, Sir Nigel Gresley was based at Crewe south sheds in those days in preservation of course ..This was always an easy loco to clean as it never got that dirty like a black five…

We still have a 75 year old driver on the books at my depot ! Our last link with steam
@dermotmcglinchey28211 ай бұрын
@@hughesy45108 Wow that’s amazing , great to hear there’s still some drivers around from the steam days, obviously he was a fireman back then like I was …You never forget that smell of steam locos or a working shed , I always remember we used paraffin for cleaning the engines taking off the grime and then emulsion as we called it to polish it afterwards…After Crewe south sheds closed we were still rostered there booking on and off and I think it closed completely in 1969 but I had already transferred to Old Oak Common…

Having worked for XC from 96 when 47/8s were an everyday occurance its lovely to see this. I worked through Reading on a daily basis going to Bomo, Pompey, Brighton and Padd all on 47s. Happy days that we thought would never end In August 2002. Some right gems here, ex Eastern, Scottish to boot 👌

Nice to see 47 819 in action: I was a fairly regular attendee at Reading in the early 90s but missed 91-93 as I was posted to Scotland to command 819 Naval Air Squadron. 😀. Great video - thanks for compiling and posting.

@@hughesy45108 In 1998 I joined GNER at Bounds Green and during my TOPS acquaint course discovered that 819 was now 784 ‘Condover Hall’. @@chrissutton4256 unfortunately locos were in the past when I started as a driver on the railway. A diet of 150s/156s/158s/195s/319s/331s for me these days. Screaming traction motors on the 319s is as exciting as it gets these days in the day job 😆

Fantastic to see all this great footage! Brings back so many memories of time spent at Reading. @@hughesy45108....all electrified now with overhead wires. Reading station was extensively rebuilt about a decade ago, with a much bigger concourse/booking hall. Also some of the platforms were lengthened in order to accommodate the Elizabeth Line trains, while one or two other platforms were got rid of, as some of the lines have been reconfigured. It's got a different vibe about it now. Feels like a big city station rather than an important commuter town hub.
