I love watching these phone repair videos. I actually went and replaced the battery on my original Google Pixel not too long ago due in part to videos like this. For my first repair like that it could have gone worse, I burned the bottom of the screen with a heat gun but it's only noticeable when the screen is off so it doesn't bother me. Everything else works fine and the battery now properly holds a charge so I call it a win.

For sure. He stripped it down disconnected it/reconnected it and then fitted the screen. Surely a waste of time if there’s any charge left in the battery there still being the potential for shorting it? Those Pixels seem so reliable. Fascinating alternative to the Galaxy range and iPhones. I'm amazed at how cheaply you can get these phones and parts. 6:45 a lot of customers don't want to wait for the adhesive to dry sadly. My solution is to use scotch tape around the edges of the display and pull it tight down around the bottom of the device. I then tell the customer to be easy on it for 24 hours and then they can remove the tape. Not everyone listens and occasionally I get phones back same day with a screen that fell off since they couldn't deal with the tape.
@acumenium81572 жыл бұрын
A lot of customers probably *can't*. It's not 2001 anymore, you kind of need your phone to do anything, and few people have two functioning phones.
@Saxophone_King2 жыл бұрын
@@acumenium8157 kinda leaves everyone in a bad situation. That's why I settled on the tape solution. So far the only time issues have come up is from people being impatient and pulling the tape too early. One of them literally said "it looked bad" so they peeled it and yanked the screen off in the process. Wound up breaking a part that had taken 2 months to arrive because they couldn't wait another 24 hours.
@acumenium81572 жыл бұрын
@@Saxophone_King Why are you as a repair shop not keeping the phone during the repair process (of which curing absolutely is), though? Or are you talking about people who apply it themselves and mess it up?
@Saxophone_King2 жыл бұрын
@@acumenium8157 as you said before, people can't leave their phones for the whole curing time of 24 hours. I always allow for at least an hour of curing time in the shop and add the tape so that customers can take it with them an not be cut off from the world. I also give them a verbal and written warning about adhesives and curing times. Most listen. Some don't. There's not much I can do and still get people their phones in a reasonable time frame in this modern world. The scotch tape method works surprisingly well when applied correctly and allowed to do it's job.
@acumenium81572 жыл бұрын
@@Saxophone_King I see. I have no idea how third-party repairs shops work. I know like official companies, you send something in, you are *not* getting that thing back so fast. Really unfortunate situation we're in regarding phone repairs. You can't give someone a burner or something for a day because that's a big cost to add up per customer, but people need their phones and generally only that one that just broke and needs repairs.

Rubber Bands --- I'd recommend using a padded weight (perhaps a brick, or a chunk of heavy metal). The padding might be an old sock. Place the phone on a padded surface, and the weight on top. It would apply pressure more evenly, more controlled (you choose the mass of the weight), no pressure points, and much easier to use. Less chance of disaster. If alignment is a concern, then use tape to hold the screen in position. All this is speculation, not based on experience. But the rubber bands make me wince. ;-) Edit to add: Choose the weight's mass so that it doesn't break the screen. Ensure it is appropriately padded. There's no reason why applying the necessary and appropriate pressure smoothly from a well designed weight wouldn't be LESS likely to break screen than the uneven and inconsistent force from rubber bands. One could even calculate the exact pressure being applied (e.g. in PSI) being the mass over the area. It doesn't require much effort to arrive at a better solution than the rubber bands

Hugh uses E8000 which is a liquid adhesive. If you're repairing devices that customers will end up actually using, it is unsuitable as it takes too long to reach max bond strength. TESA 61395 is a much better option (especially if you're replacing a screen that was previously held in place using tape, such as the Pixel 4a 5G). TESA 61395 is pressure activated and doesn't need cure time, plus it gives hard OLED screens "room to breathe" so it won't break as easily.
