Chile Prince had the media in a frenzy about that outfit. Funny thing is the backside was actually covered with a nude colored fabric. So he didn't actually show his butt, but what's funnier is nobody and I mean nobody knew he was going to wear that, not even the band until they were heading to the stage to perform 😂. That man was a menace

This award show marked the end of a certain era of pop music that would be virtually non-existent come the following year's VMA's. After Nirvana, Dr. Dre, and Mary J. Blige exploded onto the scene within that 12-month-span, the superstars of yesteryear vanished almost overnight and the era of jock jam dance music, family-friendly pop-rap, synthy adult contemporary pop ballads, and quirky-yet-not-edgy alternative rock was thrown in the garbage in favor of grunge, gangsta rap, and sexy R&B jams. Mariah was able to adapt, but the rest of that late 80's/early 90's crew of superstars wouldn't be so lucky

You got that right. The following year would be like night and day with the 1992 show. Basically this 1991 show felt like remnants of the 80's trying to hang on for dear life, but clearly the 90's were starting to take shape and form.

The AIDS epidemic was crazy. When I was in 5th or 6th grade, we had to make shirts with our own safe sex logo on it, and it was for grades. Mine said, 'A Tisket A Tasket A Condom Or A Casket' and it had a casket and whatever other designs I could bubble paint on. It's def cringe, but also, we were actually taught sex ed and safe sex back then. Given the surge in stds lately, it worked and is still needed.
@bradpity
@bradpity 3 ай бұрын
as someone who is hugo’s age, but living in the states: when they taught us sex ed, it was in 6th and 7th grade. in 6th grade, they taught us a bit about our bodies and what to expect from getting a period. in 7th grade, it was all about scaring us into abstinence. education about sex and safe sex didn’t happen, and as far as i understand, it’s kinda stayed that way. that was over 10 years ago. 😢
@juzkiddin
@juzkiddin 3 ай бұрын
@bradpity Unfortunately, it shows in the younger generations. Our parents never seem to want to do it properly and leave it up to schools because that's how they learned, but don't realize that it's not taught anymore, really at all. Now we have people running around not knowing the first thing about sex or how bodies and diseases work. There's been another burst of STDs, teen parents and child abuse because most teens don't have the patience for an infant and move through boyfriends who don't care or want a kid. Scary.

91 was an interesting time. It was sort of a nexus where the old sounds and styles of the 80's overlapped with the new sounds and styles of the 90's. I went to school one day with a head full of 80's hair metal cliches, and came home to the video for Smells Like Teen Spirit. The new sounds came in like a thief in the night, and suddenly none of the stuff I had listened to as a younger kid mattered anymore. It seemed to happen literally overnight. I didn't know I was witnessing a sea change in the music industry at the time, but looking back I'm kind of happy that I got to see it.

The first half of 1991 still carried that sprightly 1988-1990 vibe. However, around September and into the fall-marked by the emergence of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and Naughty By Nature's "O.P.P."-the mood suddenly flipped, and the year began to hint at what was to come. 1992 was a weird year. Oddly transitional and uncertain of its identity. It wasn’t the 80s anymore, but it also hadn’t fully embraced the 90s. It felt like it had a split personality, with remnants of the late 80s clashing against elements that would fully form by the mid-90s, almost causing both extremes to cancel each other out. 1993 marked the first year that truly captured the essence of the 1990s.

Some other known highest notes sung live to compare: Whitney did Bb6 (an octave lower), celine Eb6, Aretha E6, Patti labelle F6, Ariana C7 (she sorta hit up to Eb7), Gaga B5, Taylor G5, Chaka C6 (highest i've heard), Jennifer hudson C6, Kelly Clarkson C7, Pink D6, Normani Eb7, Minnie riperton F#7, Adele A5, Beyonce F6, Diana Ross B5, Christina A6, Lisa Fisher G6, Barbra D6, Britbrit A5?, Katy Eb6, Miley e6 etc. Not saying she's better just to show how impressive this was

I find it hilarious how the pop music scene of the early 90s gave Rob, Fab, and Zelda so much shit for lip-syncing to other people’s voices…only to turn around and embrace Eurodance for a time despite Eurodance having just as, if not *more,* blatant lip-syncing as the people they had just shamed into obscurity. Yes, I know there was Mariah, Boyz II Men, and All-4-One, but those artists were more R&B than pop. I’m referring to the pure, unadulterated pop music that Eurodance was obviously a part of. A bit of hypocrisy in the 90s pop industry, that’s all I’m saying

Madonna chose to lip synch because the song was already well known. She also didn't want to hold a wired microphone 🎤 because of the choreography and with three mics needed the chances of getting tangled was high. In addition, the wireless headset were not perfected yet an interference was likely or it just would stop working intermittently. Madonna felt the performance was more important than a vocal plus with the time period in which they were performing didn't have that technology plus inclusion of the hand fans.

7:15 Christian Slater is such a boring closet case. And he battered and pushed a woman down some stairs once. He's been in some fantastic films and was admittedly good in them, but he's a piece of work and people don't remember that well enough.

A few days after this aired marked the most epic month in music history. Metallica’s black album, the long awaited GNR use your illusions double set and Nirvanas Nermind were all released. Metallica, AC/DC, black crows and Pantera would also perform in front of 1.6 million people in Moscow which marked the end if the Cold War.

DAMN Taco Bell!!!! 59¢ for a taco. Oh, how I miss the 90's FRFR. I currently work at Taco Bell and a taco is now $2.19!!!

That cheaper then they are where I live. A soft taco is 2.89 and the hard tacos are 2.99, and the last time we stopped there for tacos they were all lettuce so we just stopped getting the tacos.

I was about 12 when this aired. We taped it and I *know* I watched this about 100 times so I remember all of the quirks 😅 This is the VMA I hold most dearly in my memories.

I'm a big Martha Wash fan.... Zelma did lipsync to Martha's vocals on the music video for Gonna Make You Sweat but she is singing live with her own voice here on the MTV Awards.

I was there to watch the 2002 show, this one was a year before i was born... But i know it from the legendary performance by Prince. It was an interesting point in time. Jane's Addiction broke up just when alternative rock was about to take over, they could have been huge... grunge was right around the corner and the era of hair bands was truly over. Metal got heavier and rap got more serious. C&C Music Factory winning that many awards is ridiculous though...

I'm not sure if you'll see this, but you slightly mixed up a fact - Yes, Martha Wash does indeed sing on the studio version of "Gonna Make You Sweat." However, Zelma is actually singing during this live performance (hence her "thank you for showing people I can sing" comment).

Great year to be 14! What a time man. Oct 91 got my first French kiss/kiss period while walking in the park together with all the foliage falling around us while my dog sat at our feet. Yup! Just had a moment.

7:07 coke and pepsi always had commercials about their competition before everyone and everything got wrapped in laws and legalities to where you can barely do anything, like a friendly public rivalry between two soda brands. Another nostolgia review of a bunch of "who cares" responses from me and gratefulness to grow up in this era and not the baptist grandmother climate of young people today. Including this guy.

Especially super highly overrated acts like R.E.M. and C&C Music Factory. I couldn't stand either one. Deee-Lite deserved something at least. On the other hand, I was happy to see Prince and, even though she wasn't there, Janet Jackson winning a award.
