The gay LA cops refers to the incident in April 1998 in which George Michael is arrested for "engaging in a lewd act" in a public bathroom in Beverly Hills. The cop was "undercover" in a "sting operation". It was a "If you show me yours, I'll show you mine" type situation.

For some reason you can tell MTV still had more credibility then. I mean Beck, Tori Amos etc. they would never use artists from those genres these days, especially when they are not Top 10 radio artists. They offered way more grown up variety then. Now its all geared towards teenagers.

It always amazes to learn about the political climate of the 90s and early 00's bc I was a clueless little kid who had no idea of anything going on in the world. Knowing it was something that had been going on for years changes my perspective on the attacks.

@rufusmommy76 I meant that being a 5th grader when it happened, in my mind it seemed way more random to place blame on the Middle East. But knowing now that there was lots of discourse around the middle east prior to attacks changes the perspective from which I view them bc I have more knowledge of the political climate at the time. It makes more sense why the middle east was blamed when you know the political climate at the time was very anti-middle east.

Music in the second half of the 90’s is so underrated
@can72287
@can72287 3 ай бұрын
There’s a reason for that. It was the worst time for music. 90s alternative and grunge was dying and didn’t yet hit that 00s alternative/indie. Golden age of hip hop (early 90s) was done and did not hit the second golden age/rise of the south. Pop had no direction (this was before the teenybopper era). The R&B was good though. But the era is defined by one hit wonders and novelty acts like spice girls, Hanson, jamariquai, chambawamba, manson, ima Barbie girl, Macarena and soft pop acts like cranberries and sixpence none the richer. I mean there were some good songs but overall the era has no direction.

The pre-teen pop era award shows feel so different, especially this era. Rock wasn't the omnipotent mega force it had been earlier in the 90's, but the full boyband/teen girl pop star explosion hadn't exactly settled in yet, so it was kind of a mishmash of everything to figure out what was the next hot thing. You can tell they still weren't super comfortable with hip-hop yet when they were out here lauding Will Smith and Puff Daddy the whole time though lol

Did anyone else notice the similarities between this set and the 2000 set? Specifically that big thing off to the side with the tv screens in it and the steps going down it? I’m 98% sure those are the same steps Britney walked down during her ICONIC 2000s VMAs performance. I didn’t know Billy Corgan wrote songs for the Celebrity Skin album! What a fun fact. I still listen to both bands and now I can hear his influence in some of the songs.

Omg Hugo! I thought I was subscribed, but I wasn't! I am now! I swear sometimes youtube messes up my likes & subscribes when I'm on my "smart" tv. Edit: I was just thinking, when I saw Liza, about how I always forget that she's Judy Garland's daughter, and then you mentioned Jerry and Ben Stiller, and I had totally forgotten that George's dad (Seinfeld) is Ben Stiller's dad! Totally forgot, lol. Nepotism in Hollywood doesn't really bother me the way it does others, it kinda only makes sense that the children of actors/musicians would themselves become actors/musicians; as long as they're skilled at their craft, then so be it. If it's obvious that the nepo baby has zero skill but they're still getting jobs, then that's not cool.

The "gay cop" thing Ben said was a reference to the Marilyn Manson video titled The Dope Show that had gay cops in it.

Madonna turned 40 that year. Ginger Spice turned 26. Lol that's why he asked that question and probably went over head. Lol still love Madonna!

Back in the day the term “gay” was not to infer two people of the same sex. It meant, “gay”, stupid, messed up, etc. Why don’t you do the 90’s MTV awards when Gun n Roses came out drunk AF 😂

Something I’ve noticed from watching enough of these videos is that in the Best New Artist category, there’s always one or two nominees that in retrospect, don’t fit in with the other, predominantly iconic songs that make up the rest of the nominees. I think this is because some artists turn out not to have the same legacy as the rest, even if that legacy is just one song like Natalie Imbruglia or, from previous years, Meredith Brooks or James Blunt. What I’m saying is Cherry Poppin Daddies don’t fit in with Tubthumping and The Way
