I worked for Hulcher 15 years ago, those guys are a special breed. It's not uncommon to be working a derailment for 30+ hours straight of heavy manual labor in some horrble and dangerous conditions. Respect to those who have the metal to excel in this mostly unknown profession.

In my opinion, this railroad isn't doing much better on maintaining good track alignment than their predecessor, The Milwaukee Road, except the ballast rock looks cleaner. By the 1970's, the Milwaukee was plagued with derailment due to poor track maintenance. Interesting to note that those 2 locomotives, #500 & 501 were both owned by the Milwaukee. They were purchased new in 1972. Really nice to see them roaming their original owner rails.

I'm *amazed* how much lifting power these "Boom Cats" have... The strut or frame isn't even that thick, so far as post diameter, yet it can lift a super heavy locomotive! Even if you divide the weight between 2 or 4 Boom cats, that's still *a lot* of weight! You'd think those little boom posts would bend...

when I was a kid i did some work with this company in Indiana they were very demanding but they paid very well and treated you well. If you were on emergency sight that lasted over two hours they brought you plenty of food and drinks to keep your energy up. never had to asked twice for anything on sight. They paid me from the time my phone rang until I got back home as long as it didn't last over 48 hours

The locomotive may have spread the track if it was overweight for this section of track, or if there was a section of rotten ties. The track looks rather corrugated. This is a thing with jointed rails, the joint is flexible and the movement of trains causes sinkage under the joint. Normal maintenance is to send a tamper to lift & pack the ballast under the joints. You wonder if there is a maintenance issue here that needs to be addressed.
@jasonasselin4 жыл бұрын
It was said they blew the joint total apart.

If the train jumped the tracks because of the track how is it they only reposition the train in the same spot where it derailed to begin with. Logic would state that this should not be possible until either the track is fixed or the train is moved further down before laying it down.

So I realize this is years old and very cool video. This was a very minor derailment. That being said what is the cost to rerail the engine cars and fix the track. I can't get a handle around these cost. I read about operators stopping delivering cost of the maintance cost vs. the money there can make. I've seen companies get told there not delivering 6 cars a week cause it cost too much! So here is a RR that's struggling... did this cost 5k 50k or 100k to fix?

Maybe someday, with a little luck, this railroad will bite the bullet and actually do some serious MoW and stop trying top run on the ground. Almost every video, watching the wood cars and others, rocking like rocking chairs, makes me wonder. Do they really like wasting time re-railing their equipment? With that said, thoroughly enjoy all your videos. Thank you...

Yes, these are former Milwaukee Road. About 2nd to last major purchase they made before the 1977 bankruptcy. The GP38-2's were bought around the same time and in 1976, the last purchase were the MP15AC's. Nice to see them on home rails, although they probably spent most of their time running on the main lines between Chicago and Tacoma and Twin Cities.

@@fhowland It is not just the cost of rerailing... it is the cost to the customers of delayed shipments, and ultimately... shippers will go to trucks if the railroad is not safe or reliable for their products and servicing THEIR customers!
