No matter what anyone says, using a regenerative healing factor which amplifies and speeds up a bodies natural response to pain to promote healing of injuries, but when it's inside a human, attempts to heal their emotional damage is fucking genius level shit. Using that interpretation of the superpower as a device to investigate hereditary male rage, domestic abuse, emotional surpression, repressed memories, how unaddressed childhood trauma creates distance in adult relationships, and how a masculine society typically responds with anger to cover their pain or to deal with mental illnesses is *the* most ambitious and emotionally interesting story in a superhero film to date and this film is a fucking titan. The dialogue occasionally being a bit too on-the-nose is the only thing I dislike about it. Everything about its core is absolute gold and only gets better every year. Every time a new superhero film releases which doesn't have a tenth of the stomach for narrative this one had in 2003 further solidifies it as even further ahead of its time. What a good year for movies.

The changes I went through when addicted... Then I went to prison and you have to be a stone faced stoic 24/7 and the whole atmosphere is 'men don't care what's happening to them'... Or it's very taboo to open up about your feelings. No matter who you are, you are terrified first time in the nick... But you don't show it. And you've no time alone really... Its a hard thing and it's ridiculous that as a man showing fear or pain is seen as 'wrong'... When you are addicted you feel like a monster and you do awful things you never would otherwise. Honestly, I really do love how this movie tries to address the whole childhood trauma angle of Bruce's psyche/The Hulk. I mean, part of it's because the Hulk/all of Banner's other personalities stemming from his childhood is the lynchpin of my favourite comic run of all time, The Immortal Hulk, but I also just really like that aspect of the character. The dynamics between Bruce and his other selves just add a lot to the character, and I really appreciate it compared to the much more sanitized/unfocused version of the character we get in the MCU.

@@ScooterinAB I’m glad you asked Scooter. The Hulk debuted in May of 1962. The idea that Banner’s multiple Hulk identities (Green, Grey, Professor, Devil, and so on) were a result of his childhood trauma was introduced in October of 1985. 23 years into the characters run. So by that measure, the concept of the trauma being the source of his multiple Hulk identities had already existed for 28 years by the time that the film was released. So as you can see, referring to it as a fairly “recent” addition, is misleading.
@ScooterinAB2 жыл бұрын
@@askanison2266 23 years later is a fairly recent addition though. Those were “recent additions” in comparison to when the characters debuted. But adding a new element to a characters story 23 years after his debut and 28 years before his feature film adaptation can by no means be viewed as “recent” comparative to the release of the film. An interpretation of Hulk I've come to like is that while Bruce faced experimentation and abuse from his father he kinda disassociated from the situation and formed an alternate personality, which is what manifests as the Hulk. (Now DID isn't something that really has a ton of studies on it and as it seems in recent modern psychiatry doesn't exist per se, but applying fictional psychology for a moment. Source I'm a med student) This makes some sense to me, especially when you consider that a more well adjusted individual, Jennifer Walters, basically remains the same when she hulks out. Since being a Hulk seems tied to emotional distress, someone who has had so much emotional distress he has compartmentalised it into a separate personality would be the strongest Hulk, and the most uncontrollable. This movie imo tries to set that up as the mild mannered Bruce who cannot get angry is merely "one personality" of Bruce, and under severe emotional distress he "switches" to cope with it as he did when he was young, and in the process, hulks out. Eric Bana's performance seems adjacent to this I think.

But going back and watching it after years of mcu, it’s still pretty shocking how stoic and introspective it is and how there’s definite effort to make it as grounded as a hulk movie could possibly be. It’s just so the opposite of what we’ve come to be used to in the genre. Closer in its aim to something like the dark knight and Logan, even if imperfect

I think the trauma angle is actually one of the films greatest strengths, almost everything in the film has to do with the larger theme of anger and trauma. I also love how it accomplishes this through imagery and even abstract sequences, like the finale. It’s a much higher goal than what you see in almost every Marvel movie these days, not to mention she hulk.

yeah, this is by far the best portrayal of Bruce banner. The MCU Banner (mark ruffalo) basically jeff lebowski, the dude, but he gets mildly upset sometimes and turns into the hulk. The incredible hulk movie from 2008 (ed norton) was just a mild mannered guy with a heart condition that turns him into a monster. there was no depth, nothing interesting whatsoever about those versions of bruce banner. everything about this movie is better than 2008 incredible hulk. This movie is better each time i watch it which is the opposite of most superhero movies which are best on the first watching

I never liked the Hulk mostly because I was scared of him as a kid. To me he was just a scary Monster and I would never have thought I could relate to this character. A friend of mine, huge fan of the TV Hulk, dragged me into this and what can I say: I loved it. Especially because they made the Hulk a manifestation of trauma, angst and the rage it comes with it. It all made sense to me now. Plus I loved that they took the comic book seriously. Never forget how they made comic book movies at that time and while doing so had to emphasize all day how low level comic books are. This one digs for the greek tragedy within the comic book story itself and thus tries to elevate it on par with high culture. And that is why I will die on a hill defendig this movie.

Thanks fellas, nice review! One grizzle though: Blue Harvest was not the working title for StarWars; It was, in fact, a cover story for the making of Return of the Jedi, in order to throw the press off the track of the new film's content, and help keep the plot a secret. An entire sub-marketing campaign was created with tee-shirts, caps and posters for Blue Harvest: Horror Beyond Imagination to throw people off the track of what the production team was doing in the desert. Apparently, today, those original tees and caps etc are some of the most valuable collectables of all because most of the crew who were told to wear them at the time simply threw them away after filming. I'm pretty sure it was on of the most elaborate and expensive marketing misdirections ever. Now, sadly, all but forgotten

The disconnect part in 8:11 is actually very genius as even his father pointed this out, Banner Bruce is just a shell, a hallowed one for the real bruce, his twin brother to come out and its the hulk. Adds more sense as well that Bruce and hulk are separate beings like hulk 2003 looks like Doomguy before said Doomguys face even existed, it was still pixels. To be honest, Hulk, no matter how heroic he does, will never be tolerated by everyone and even earth itself for a long time, his father made this very clear and in the comics, he has the most shittiest moments where he has to have a happy ending and then said happy ending turn into a nightmare, Jarella is one example and the most painful is losing Caiera and more that followed and even before these two example, it has been living hell for Bruce no matter the good moments he has, and this film has captured it perfectly along with his mannerisms that are signs of his problems but unnoticed even by him, heck he cannot even remember anything when he was a child as it was the hulk in control. And also there is even another website they made that shows more of hulk stats, a video of it can be seen in archives hulk KZbin channel but the website itself is no longer available and can be access through time machine website if its still ok as with the flash player becoming obsolete. Including the Nano meds but it can no longer be access as flash became a footnote. But yeah I have to agree that some split screens are unnecessary and the camera shots for it are not needed, to be honest, more dialogue should have been added that will say a lot more information about the hulk and banner from scientist, military, and even the civilian population seeing hulk for the first time and characters as well, like rick jones, the dark lightings as well as it is hard to see, they should just increase the brightness a bit for more people to see The fight scenes are not bad and I loved it when Ang Lee was suppose to add more but due to money and tech, it never happened, overall it was good.

I just wish they used the design from the Norton one. In that one every muscle's strained and blown up to and past the absolute limit. Current hulk looks like a big friendly green giant who is super strong. Norton Hulk you wouldn't bother trying to shoot or cut, current Hulk looks like that should work just fine

What people don't get about the end of the Hulk is the last second redemption of the father. The father is absorbing the Hulk and he sees that all the pain is his fault. It's implied in the audio. The bubble that forms is the father sacrificing himself to shield his son from the gamma bomb.
@ultimamage32 жыл бұрын
That's interesting. The audio, especially when he cries out that "It's not stopping... Take it back!" may have come across to audiences more like the reaction a Narcissist has when their victim finally lashes out. Shocked, of course, but only insomuch as it affects and hurts them personally. David showed absolutely no care for the fact that he cause Bruce so much pain before. He even wished Bruce was dead/that he'd succeeded in killing him as a child, straight to his face, and the plan was to take Hulk's power so that Bruce could "sleep now, and forget forever", i.e. Die. Thus, the bubble is his mutation trying and failing to cope with the surge of energy. Otherwords, a Narcissist faces the consequences of their own actions and shows a smidge of personal regret. What David got was more than he asked for since the well of Bruce's power (from his trauma) was bottomless.
@Mike286252 жыл бұрын
@@ultimamage3 i can see that. I suppose I'm an optimist, deep down. I feel like, there's a sense of love as bruce is sinking under the water And he's not the Hulk anymore And we see the gamma blast from his perspective and its sort of womb like in a way. Maybe it was coincidental to the fathers hubris. Maybe it was redemptive. Maybe it was instinctive reflex. It's a cool movie!
