A couple of comments: You have the stress wrong for 'ull speaking. You tend to go up in tone on the last syllable. This is common in the Geordie accent, further to the north, but not in Hull. You explained that 'Bains' was of a similar derivation to 'Bairns' in Scotland, but then you pronounced 'Bains' as 'Bairns' try thinking 'Banes' as a more accurate Hull pronunciation. In some of your example sentences you use "'ere you go'." Though this is common in most Yorkshire regions, more common in Hull is "ee y'ar'" (from 'Here you are') Of course dialect isn't just the accent we use, or even the peculiar way we pronounce words; as you demonstrate it's the use of words specific to that region, but it's also how we use and define existing words. In Hull, many people will use the word 'While' when they really mean 'Until' so you'll hear: "wait while I've finished doing this" instead of "wail until I've finished doing this." - a small point I know, but imagine how Hull people would react to a roadsign that says "Wait here while the lights are on red" - they could be in for a long wait!
@jondo553
@jondo553 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly. The tone should be incredibly flat. Spot on with the "here you go" comment, but I think it's more "ee-er yu'ar" than "ee y'ar" these days.

@@RainMakeR_Workshop Larkin, is common asf. Mafting too. Nithered never heard it personally. gis a skeg is bit old fashioned but still used. Larkin is mostly used in younger generation cos of the "play" thing you experiance in primary school, good times.
@RainMakeR_Workshop
@RainMakeR_Workshop 4 жыл бұрын
@@seiori I grew up on Orchard Park and Gypsyville, I've lived in Bransholme, on Bev Road, Holderness Road, in town and now on Hessle Road. I'm (sadly) about as "Hullian" as you get. And before this vid I have NEVER heard "mafting" or "nithered". If they are used, they aren't common in the slightest and many (if not most) wont know what you mean. Nor have I ever heard anyone pronounce snowing in such a stupid way. I've asked multiple people about them since and a few head heard of the words, but didn't use them. Most I asked hadn't heard them at all. They may well be terms "from" Hull, but they aren't used. I will say Larnkin is fairly common in kids. Even I used it back in in school, but its a word most people "grow out of", Kid's only use it when they find out adults also use the word "play" for sexual stuff and if you say play then other kids take the piss. "Gis a skeg" however, has to be one of the single most chavy term I've ever heard. So that's probably why I didn't know it. But again, anyone who isn't a chav, won't have a clue what you're on about.
@seiori
@seiori 4 жыл бұрын
@@RainMakeR_Workshop I mean, just because you haven't heard them, doesn't mean they aren't common. Notice, the point of discussion is people understanding the words. I myself actually use mafting. For the snowing on, its actually done a bit shit, but our pronunciation of the world, not for everyone, is a bit scuffed. Its not like how he did it, but I understand what hes getting at, me just saying snowing to myself helps me realise it. Here again, you admit the word larkin is common, remember. This guy is talking about using the words, we aren't discussing how much they are used in our day to day lives. How many times do you need to ask someone if they are playing out, out of childhood. Exactly, there is a lack of reason to use the word. Doesn't mean people wouldn't understand you. Understanding words, and using words. Are two different things. Just because you don't use the words in your daily life, doesn't mean if someone said it to you, you wouldn't understand. Just like larkin, i'm sure you probably havent' used the word in a long time, doesn't mean if someone said it to you it wouldn't make sense. And chavy or not, still a term. And I personally have known about it for years, I dont use it cos Gis a look is just easier, and saves me repeating myself to people who dont get it, you get that a lot online. Point of discussion is would people understand you if you use these terms, I would say for the most part yes. But I do agree a lot of us dont commonly use them. Cos other words are just easier, etc etc. Also I too have lived down all those places and greatfield. Doesnt really mean much. grammar yikes its midnight give us a break you get the gist

Not a bad effort from the lad. Missed out croggy, chip spice (all hail the chip spice!), tenfoots, and people saying bugger a lot and it’s not really swearing, as my mother said once “I’ll be buggered if I’m going to put up with all this swearing!”. Then there are the elongated vowels, a Hull person asking for a bar of soap, and a can of come, mentioning it’s cold because of the snow, will be met with bewilderment in Manchester.

Ten foot as in...the alley ways behind the terrace houses where the back yards meet from adjacent streets. Yep, I know that. But there aren't any tenfoots down Marlborough Avenue. That was a nice area but they've probably all been turned into student flats by now.

we moved from the villages many years ago and brought a lot of these words with us some are older some are new but the majority of them you will only hear from 30 to 40 year olds the kids today get taught in schools by the snobs now so they all talk different to us we are just the old school trying to keep a tradition alive but sadly like many words get lost in the political madness of english :P
