Buttery is originally the Dundee name for these "buns". The Aberdeen word was rowie's. That's row as in how. Buttery was thought to be a more posh description. (something posh from Dundee!🤭)

You know that's a different language, right; it's Scots. It's even protected by the UK as a historical language alongside Gaelic and is taught as a second in Scotland.

Great fun! And possibly more true of Doric as spoken in rural Aberdeenshire than Aberdeen City. You'll certainly hear "Aye Aye" more in the country. And "butteries" is often used instead of "rowies" out of the city.

In Aberdeen they would actually say “bricks”, rather than “breeks”, which is more general Scottish rather than Aberdonian. Also, a buttery is actually just called a “roll”, or a “rowie” in Aberdeen, or an “Aberdeen roll” or “buttery” in other parts of Scotland. An ordinary roll is called a “softie”.

‘Quine’ doesn’t come from ‘Queen’. It comes from the Norwegian word ‘Kvinne’ which means ‘Woman’. Another one that should be in the list is ‘Muckle Braw’ meaning ‘Very Good’. This comes from the Swedish ‘Mycket Bra’ which literally translates as ‘Very Good’. Scotland borrowed a lot of Scandinavian words and phrases during the Viking era through raids, fishing and trading.

Aberdonian by birth and upbringing here. It may interest you to know that "kwine" is derived from the Old English word "Queynt" which is indeed the root of the word "queen", but is also the root for another word. I'm going to let you guess what that one is. It has four letters.

Nae bad ava chiel! I'd jist like to say that dinnae is mair soothern. In Aberdeen itsel', they say dinna. If ye ging tae Montrose or even Stonehaven, mair fowk wid say dinnae. North o Aberdeen in the Broch and the Blue Toon it's ayewis dinna. In Aberdeen they say ah (all). Jist a few miles South, they say aw instead. As for butteries, maybe nowadays it's mair common , bit it eesed tae be rowies. They're nae flat bread rolls! They're mair like flat croissants if onything. They use a lot of butter or margarine between the layers. They're nae exactly heart friendly.

Butteries aren't bread rolls, as in the mix 500g of flour, 275g of butter and 100g of lard - that's before you put more butter on them to eat (they have been called heart attack on a plate)

Have to argue the butteries... They are not just a flat bread roll. They are a bread roll tends to be made using butter prior to, or during, the cooking phase. You'll understand it better when looking at the moist or soft ones. You'll notice clumps of flour grabbing to the bottom of the roll. This is where the greasy butteryness of the bread has coagulated the flour of the working surface. Any rolls that are cooked a bit longer don't exhibit this same behaviour as the butter dries out and makes the roll harder and more crunchy. Butteries can't be so simply named and explained. They require a bit of fleshing out.

Nice work Billy. But i notice a quirk. When you say "i dinnea ken" your inflection seems as though your asking a question rather than making a statement. Ken should be spoken with a descending tone, not ascending(rising). You seem to be a bit of an expert on it, so this is just my opinion. My favorite word is Bonny. A singer named Van Morrison has a song called "Into The Mystic" with the line "Ere the bonny boat was won, into the mystic." and you of course, have given me a new understanding of the meaning of the word Bonny. Thanks
