You know how when toddlers learn the word dog and everything fluffy with 4 legs is from then on a dog?
My friend came to stay for a few days, Billi has known her for years. Why is she a squirrel? Who knows, no fluffy tail to be seen. But Billi was consistently certain she was a squirrel 😹 it happened so frequently we couldn’t keep calling it an oops, so we leaned into the madness and just said “yes Billi, you’re right.”
We frequently get asked if Billi uses the buttons with just us, or whether she talks to other people. The answer is everyone, but you can’t get offended at her choice of words 😂

This is quite possible. I got my feelings hurt one day and cried for about an hour (very unusual for me). My cat starting fretting over me and running around. I started laughing at him and the more I laughed the sillier he got. He dove under the sofa from a running start and crashed into the wall repeatedly. He never did it before, and he hasn't done it since. I really think my laughter reinforced his behavior. I like to think he was trying to cheer me up.

That told me that she was either doing it to name the friend, and it turned out funny, and she didn’t know why, or she has done something similar in the past. And wanted to try it, again. Lastly, she may be conducting an experiment, and comparing results with this along with other experiments previously done.

We got the Fluent Pet buttons for our 3.5 year old former feral cat just over two weeks ago. We socialized the former feral by using specific words consistently for concepts like 'safe,' 'dinner,' 'follow,' 'which,' 'what,' and more. Now she knows about 65 words. She loves to have us 'follow' her when she wants to show us something. And we tell her that we are following her. She is still learning about how to press the buttons, but when she wants something she sits down by the buttons. Last night, she did not want a treat when she was trying to press a button; what she wanted was 'follow,' not the treat! So this cat knows the concepts and that the buttons make happen what the button says! She's on her way.

This reminds me of when my youngest sister was learning to speak. My older brother tried to teach her to point at me and say "ugly" because (being a kid himself) he thought that was funny. The plan backfired when she thought it meant anyone who did not live in her home. We had guests and she would point at them and say "uggy". What does that mean? My Brother: "Nothing, it's just baby-talk." Blushing profusely. Long story short... "Squirrel" is probably generic word for Any entity that lives "outside" the home.

Nah to your last point. Billi uses buttons for Mom, Dad, and outside people/creatures such as Friend, Grandma, Dog and Cat (and Squirrel). Although she seems to call other cats "Billi" too.

I don't know why Billi is so adamant that her friend Tracy should called "Squirrel". I can only guess that it's the same kind of cat-creativity that came up with "Catnip Water" to describe Mom's coffee!
