It's mind-boggling that we have a powerful Royal Family, in the midst of our democracy. It's astonishing that we pay them for their position and privileges. It's unacceptable that they charge out Institutions for use of property that should belong and does belong to Britain. Institutions that the public are taxed for! The whole Royal edifice is a charade of monumental proportions. The are successful parasites, especially to us Brits, that they profess to love and serve. The word "Serve", being a deceptively machiavellian manipulation of the millions of Brits, people and nations around the world. Almost everything about the Royal Family, has a false ring to it, and one suspects, it's all done to ensure, they carry on living off Britain and their numerous untold undeserved endeavours, positions etc. The whole edifice is outrageous, and they abuse and exploit us daily, in a myriad of ways. We give them, millions yearly, in return for what? What exactly do they do? How exactly do they benefit Britain, in a way that Democratic countries without a Monarchy, lose out on? Transparency is anathema to them, their Finances are shrouded in layers of mystery and complexities. They are Dictators, for they dictate to us daily. All this in 2024!

When Princess Elizabeth married Philip Mountbatten in 1947 the public were allowed to view her wedding presents, together worth many thousands of pounds. They were charged five shillings for the privilege. Equivalent to at least £20 today. This at a time when food rationing was stricter than it had been in wartime . They are still as greedy.

According to the Washington Evening Star, it was a public charity exhibition and the admission was half a crown. According to my inflation calculator, the modern equivalent of twelve and a half old pence, is £5.88, which is less than the current price of a beer in London. Admission to the London eye is presently £30-40 and to the Tower of London is £35. It was an international event. There was naturally great interest, for example in President and Mrs Truman's gift of an etched crystal bowl, and of course, its American maker alongside many others, received valuable exposure in the process. It is mean minded not to see this event in its correct and wider social context.

I'm torn on this. I completely agree with the premise that nobody should be born into positions of massive wealth and power which they did not earn or worse, stole. However, what happened yesterday demonstrates how bad it can get if you elect your head of state. Such elected individuals can just as easily steal and enrich themselves. Many of them are just as intolerant (sometimes more so) of minorities and as uncaring about and even opposed to human rights as members of the monarchy. I tend to favour the idea that members of the royalty should be made civil servants, with contracts and conditions of employment. They should be answerable to Parliament and their possessions should become state property.

But as the public get to know more about how much of their money goes to the Monarchy, their 'enthusiasm' diminishes a bit, even rather a lot. If the Monarchy and the government that supports paying for it does not radically restructure it, it will suffer an early demise. If they manage it well they could establish it permanently, or at least until some fruitcake like Andrew comes along and trashes any inheritance argument. Once gone it will never come back.

There is research that supports the argument that the royal family brings in a lot of tourist money. The PR value of the monarchy is high, it's not just about visitors to castles, but also about advertising the UK as a whole. _However,_ the argument that they are good PR is still bad when talking about the value of the monarchy. It reduces them to essentially mascots. Waving, smiling mascots whose existence is all about hawking the UK experience. Not only is it insulting to their value as human beings, but it means that they should then become subjects of market forces. If their purpose is to just attract visitors, then why not upgrade this bunch of mascots? Why not elect a family of supermodels to be an even better ad for the UK? Hey, let Simon Cowell turn it into a reality competition! Every five years the UK elects a new royal family. Frequent coronations, reality TV, royal action figures, etc. That'll keep the world's focus on the UK, translating into those sweet, sweet ££.

"There is research that supports the argument that the royal family brings in a lot of tourist money." Really? How can I find it? All I'm aware of is an entirely fictional number dreamed up by a 'Marketing Consultant' firm's CEO and a couple of public schoolboys sat around a London office table.

Without your monarchy, you will probably lose quite a bit of money from tourist. They don’t come because England is a quaint country, they come because of the king/queen. Be careful what you wish for…

The Tourism Myth The one that goes ... Ah but they bring a lot of money in thanks to all the tourists who come to see them blah, blah, blah. More tourists go to France than to the UK and we all know how things turned out there for the monarchy. Lots of tourists come here but for many reasons and seeing the Royals isn't very high up on that list and even if it were there isn't much chance of them getting a glimpse of any of them. Closer to home Windsor Legoland gets more visitors than Windsor Castle. More people turn out to watch a lower league football match than turn out to see a Royal walkabout.

The bulk of their wealth is property they own in the UK and if they didn't own it someone else would. They also pay 90% in taxes. Nobody else in the UK does that, but I don't hear you fools talking about that.

The Crown Estate works to make a positive impact for net zero, nature and communities while creating financial value for the UK. This year, it generated a record net revenue profit of £1.1 billion for the public finances
@Ztandard3221 сағат бұрын
All money generated from The Crown Estate should go to the public finances. Until we become a republic the King could be paid say £5 million to perform his duties with security costs covered.

King Charles has declared that profits from a £1bn-a-year deal to lease offshore windfarms will be used for the “wider public good”, weeks after citing the cost-of-living crisis in his Christmas Day speech. The funds come from the crown estate

I think the wider and more important issue us how are our government spending that money. Not on pensioners that's for sure
@Ztandard3220 сағат бұрын
@@ehilton96 Charles is very arrogant if that is true. The Crown Estate is not the private property of the King. The revenues from the Crown Estate assets do not belong to the King. The Treasury decides what the King does or does not get from these revenues. I declare that you are talking rubbish.

McDonalds have pledged to become net-zero at some point. What does that have to do with this video? Nothing of course, but neither does your comment.
