My heart still aches about how a scene of Kunikida and Katai was removed from the anime, that of Kunikida explaining to Atsushi how he knows Katai isn't dead. part of my aches may be because Katai is my favorite in bsd overall but its also cause I feel like it shows how close their bond is as friends. sure the anime has Kunikida knowing how Yoshiko looks like and the shit he thinks but the manga hit different

Cash, thank you so much for this video, I love Kunikida as a character so much, I hate how the fandom boils him down to "pearl clutching karen" and then casts him aside. He's so relatable to me as someone who literally cannot function without a notebook where I write things down and something resembling a routine (why are so many bsd characters neurodivergent coded?), and also as someone who wants to see a better world and do what he can to help that vision come true, and also as someone who has no filter (Kunikida does not let his thoughts stay as thoughts). I wish we could see more of Kunikida, and I wish the fandom would grow a second braincell, but something tells me that's not gonna happen. Thank you for bringing up all of these details about Kunikida that make him who he is, like how in Beast he's wearing a blue ribbon, that's a detail that just lives in my brain rent free. God, Kunikida deserves so much better. I don't think the Anthology manga counts as canon, but the one chapter where Kunikida decides to cook lunch for Dazai and Dazai decides he wants to have that food as his last meal because of how much he values Kunikida's cooking also lives rent free in my brain. The ending made me depressed 💀lol. But yeah Kuni is very underrated. He used to annoy me in the beginning (mostly because of his portrayal in the anime) but in s5 (or was it s4?) he grew on me. Because that’s such attention to detail and also hurts Edit: 14:15 “Kunikida Doppo is the most human character in BSD” - and isn’t it fitting that he’s the one who’s desperately trying not be in the form of chasing his ideals? Lowkey kind of similar to Mori in that way. They both try and put aside their emotions to find an ideal/optimal solution to varying degrees of success. 14:55 55 MINUTES MENTION 20:24 “Jouno outright says it” well I mean takes one to know one doesn’t it? 20:38 HA CALLED IT 21:38 “…so messed up with how he has a book on living” and Dazai has a book on dying lol. ✨ Narrative Foils ✨ Jokes aside though I think it’s part of that tragic hero thing and hoping his ideals will kill him. In the same way that Dazai doesn’t want to be a burden on anyone (✨Narat- *gets defenestrated*), I kind of feel like Kunikida hopes he dies in tragedy, because that’s how his story *should* end. His ideals *should* kill him, because no one can be THAT perfect (not unlike Yosano the longer I think about this). If Kunikida dies striving for his ideals, it lets his ideals live on and grants him freedom from the cage he has built for himself (not unlike Nikolai. god I need to stop doing that.). Meanwhile, despite having a book telling him how to die, Dazai is kinda only alive while he waits for the perfect moment to die without burdening anyone. He has to die after he has completed his unfinished business rather than in the middle of it like Kunikida (who can never complete his business because that would mean he hadn’t set his ideals high enough). 23:14 BEAST KUNIKIDA LETS GO 23:48 ayyy I totally wasn’t just mentioning that 26:08 I just love this segment on Kunikida v Dazai and how they handle Akutagawa 34:07 THERE IT IS! I WAS WONDERING WHY IT WAS LEFT OFF THE EX ANALYSIS! fucking love that quote. Can’t live off ideals if they kill you first. Alright but they other thing you didn’t talk about is like my favorite Kunikida moment though. The barge scene. The “if you try to save people you cannot you’ll both sink” line. Which COMPLETELY (imo, and I am exaggerating but only a little) recontextualizes like all of his scenes! Idk I just think it’s fascinating. Mostly because of how often it’s proved to be incorrect (but it only takes one instance the other way, say, Rokuzo, to make him want to warn others). its kinda sad, I started with the anime because one day I just found it while looking for what to watch and I really want to read the manga from the begening and read the novels but since I got so used to the anime it feels a bit weird, I really love bsd but they really did fuck up the anime, when I first looked at the manga I got a bit angry and disapointed because some scenes were cut out and just how some characters look in the anime. 15 dazai in the manga looks way better than the anime, in the anime he looks the exact same just in darker clothes, and akutagawas big dark eyes, or even fyodor, they made them look just so weird and I hate it. I hate how all people see is dazai and soukoku, I tried to talk about bsd with some of my friends but all they care about is dazai thank you for this amazing video ❤

While i never though of kunikida as boring or anything, kunikidazai is cute and all but i didn't really care about kunikida much. I've read the light novel, it's pretty much the only one of the bsd light novels i've read and it's way better than the anime adaption. I haven't watched the anime in a few years, but the light novel feels fully about Kunikida while the anime feels afraid to focus on him. You should really read bsd gaiden! I loved the light novel ( i haven't read the manga, but i feel like the lightnovel's better?? idk why) It got me into Yukito Ayatsuji's works ( which I also hughly reccomend you read) . It makes me really annoyed that no one is talking about it!

This video has honestly really inspired me to try and get my hands on more of the light novels, probably starting with Dazais entrance exam and 55 minutes (I already have stormbringer and I’m not finished with it yet) As someone who only has seen the entrance exam arc through the anime , it’s sad to see how terribly it’s portrayed. Even my friend, who mostly watched the anime, said it felt out of place and mixed in. So I’ll get my hands on those two and be able to see Dazais Entrance Exam by the actual thing, over whatever bones turned it into (it was so. Terrible. I was so confused trying to remember when it was in the manga before I realised it was supposed to be the entrance exam…)

I will admit, Kunikida isn’t one of my favorite characters (I don’t think anyone from the main cast is my favorite?) but if I had to pick a favorite from the main cast, it would be him. He’s such a complex character that others just boil down to a “side character”, “Dazai’s partner”, or “boring” etc. which honestly pisses me off at times, so I’m glad you made this analysis! Idk if its just something I latch onto as a kunikida enjoyer or if its an actual thing that was intentional but i like that asagiri does, in fact, manage to squeeze kunikida into bsd as much as he can, even if hes confined to the background. As much as he is definitely a side character in the story now, there are a l o t of moments focused on him specifically, even without the two light novels and the ova. He's more often than not the character whose point of view we see when the whole of the ada is focused on (when atsushi around, at least). When a general member of the ada is needed to do something or convey something to assist someone or the plot, its likely kunikida who is chosen to do it (e.g. the boat scene where he picks up atsushi and kyouka, dead apple with atsushi and kyouka again, the entire beginning of the doa arc where his emotions and reactions are especially focused on whilst theyre doing the raid on nikolai etc etc), even if hes not centre stage like certain other people (cough dazai cough), he still maintains a very special position within the plot where asagiri still writes him quite a significant amount over other ada members. I always found it very interesting how many people came out of watching the anime and hated kunikida/didnt understand his intent. I personally fell in love with his character via watching the anime specifically because I enjoyed his dynamics with the other characters and i liked his specific way of caring for the people around him, he didnt show his care on his face a lot of the time but he was still a foundation when things were crumbling (until he wasnt) and i understood his way of thinking, how people got so many blatantly incorrect assumptions about him through the anime still confuses me now. I'm not sure if anything i just wrote made any sense to anyone but me but i kinda just wanted to comment to boost this video in the algorithm and got carried away. Oh well.

honestly Kunikida&Dazai is my favourite duo, i consider it a crime what the anime did to "Dazai's enterence exam". Maybe it would be better if they never got to "Beast" Kunikida's character is so interesting and enjoyable to me, it's sad how people's preferences influence his relevance in the story. Nothing against Chuuya, but some of his fans gave a bit of an unpleasant lasting impression of him/his interactions with Dazai 2 yrs ago -_- Even if you have a favourite in the story, other characters deserve as much spotlight, and not to be mischaracterized Really, why do ppl have to make everything about romance? There's so much more to chracters' relationship and they just make it plain romance. Let Asagiri do what he wants to with his characters, then the story will reach it's fullest. Like he's the author

I feel like the choice of using Army Dreamers' instrumental as the background for Kunikida's analysis was a fine one. As I have come to see it from your analysis, in a way, Kunikida himself is an army dreamer. He wishes to die while pursuing his ideals. Somewhat like young soldiers chase death on the battlefield because that would conclude their ideals (of patriotism, of glory, of peace, or of serving the masses etc). Perhaps he sees death as a conclusion of his part in his ideals and a way to immortalize them.

Hi Cash! I apologize for the insanely stupid question. I can be quite inept when it comes to understanding plots as a whole and just how different characters contribute to the plot points. That being said, I know it was revealed that Dazai was the Azure Postle. I've searched across multiple platforms but my slow brain is still unable to understand how it works, I've even re-read the light novel and rewatched it in the anime. Having been a long-time watcher of your videos (Which I adore) I've realized that when it comes to anything BSD-related you explain things in such a way that I can fully understand, whereas if someone else were to explain or if I were to read it elsewhere I most likely will have no clue what they meant. It’s not going to warrant a full video but the answer is simply- the azure apostle (sasaki) was watching them at the time, so Dazai had to pretend Kunikida was about to shoot him and make Kunikida play along so that she wouldn’t know that they were onto the case. Since Sasaki DID frame Dazai, at the end of the day

people say mha is the worst fandom, imo it was always bsd fandom i can't enjoy anything without skk or shin skk being in it, i used to love skk dynamic but i hate them now because of the fandom kunikida and kaijii are my favorite characters ever but like mtp where louis is my fav character, kunikida doesn't get enough love or scenes where he shines, which made me hate the anime itself which sucks since bsd was my favorite anime atp i hope asagiri ignores all these people and start highlighting other characters, he said this story is for special people, he shouldn't follow those annoying fans that only care about ships

How do you record ur videos? I wanna make analysis videos of not just Bungo stray dogs but of other anime/media/things that interest me. I use the normal voice recording app on my device and use capcut to edit! I’m using the free version too, lol, so it’s rather easy to make videos the way I do!
