There are more that 65 million people in the world today who are displaced from their homes due to conflict and persecution - more than at any time in human history. As a photographer who spent time in refugee camps and met the people who were forced from their homes, Brian Sokol underwent a personal transformation in understanding their stories, their dreams, and their humanity. It’s time we challenged our beliefs and preconceptions about the refugee crisis. Brian Sokol is an artist, photographer and author dedicated to documenting human rights issues and humanitarian crises worldwide. Since 2012 he has focused on telling the stories of refugees, Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), and stateless people in Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Latin America. His goal is to engender empathy and action in audiences across the lines of language, race, religion and culture. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

It actually is. Imagine if everyone respected and loved each other. There would be no wars, there would be no poverty, there would be no discrimination of any kind. Everyone could live the life that he wants to live, if someone needs help you would help them and the other way around. How is this not a world everyone would want to live in? And how could you start to transform the current world into this utopia any other way but by being respectful and loving yourself? You cant change the rules of our society if you break these rules yourself all the time.

Amazing. Thank you As a refugee I can relate to everything Brian said, and I hope that this massage spread and people could consider those unfortunate people as human beings and not just statistics and definitely not a stereotype. Waiting for the translation in the video.

I think people should really take into consideration that at one possible moment their great grandparents could have been a refugee. Their husband/ wife could have possibly been a refugee. Respect these people understand them. Always put yourself into someone else's shoes before you say something mean.

*How Rome Fell in 3 Steps:* 1) Germanic tribes mass migrated into Rome due to attacks from Huns, et al. 2) Rome opened its borders 3) Migrants didn't stop pouring in. Rome became less Roman over time. It weakened. And then it fell. Forever.
