DO NOT just stick with one city unless you’re on lower difficulty, keeping up with the AI requires getting the yields and production and pops that only more cities can provide
@EstrellaViajeViajero8 ай бұрын
It's generally a bad idea to group scouts in Ancient as they are barely stronger than nomads. I like to disband extra scouts to provide population to my cities (make sure they are inside your borders), which I then turn into warriors who are a LOT stronger.
@EstrellaViajeViajero8 ай бұрын
Now the Neolithic traits stack. If you can get 2-3 of them, it really gives you a massive power boost in the early to mid-game (not having to worry about research and money in the Ancient era and only a little in the Classical makes getting stability and thus influence so much easier to maintain and get, especially with the luxury resource stability nerfs).

There is none of the in depth explanations or decision making that makes a Potato video unique. Sorry to hear you didn't have a great time with Humankind. I've had my own share of problems with the game over the years, and it looks like this run was pseudo-cursed from the beginning with the relative lack of animals (nothing you can do about bad RNG other than hope Amplitude improves it), but I hope you might benefit from a few notes: 1.) Delay Ancient a bit more. Starting in the Ancient Era with 15 population but a longer Neolithic is generally a *lot* stronger, even if you are doing peaceful, vibing things as it gives you way more resources, discouraging the AI from attacking you. 2.) Especially as Aesthete, prioritize building resource extraction with influence instead of production or gold. Cultural Blitz is a very powerful ability, but you need to leverage influence into more resources as quickly as you can, and resource extraction (and even basic harbors on outposts!) are great at this. 3.) If you bring more resources into the Ancient via more population, you'll have more opportunities to keep units on the board *chopping*. Chopping down forests is immensely important if you want to build things quickly- again, peaceful or no. You can obviously vibe as hard as you want when it comes to Humankind, but I think the higher difficulties these days do require you at least 4.) Get more cities earlier. Again, even if you are playing peacefully and just aiming to vibe, the AI will respect strength and having more cities is a quick way to that. Especially if you are playing Aesthete, getting more cities is immensely important to scaling up your economy.
@EstrellaViajeViajero8 ай бұрын
Well said. The second city is quite cheap. It's the third one where it starts getting expensive. And yes, the RNG in the neolithic can be terrible - I had a whole continent shared only with one other player and there were like 5 animals spawned across the entire continent in 30 turns (I usually play on endless). But sometimes it's great and I can get all 3 stars in 20-25 turns. I wish they'd rebalance that.

I once did a one-massive-city run. I picked every production culture I could. It went pretty well, and I got my production up to something like two million or four million per turn. Then it glitched out from a stack overflow.
@EstrellaViajeViajero8 ай бұрын
I get why the district cost increases - because attaching a territory is basically a "free" hamlet. You get four specialist slots, as well as all the production and food picked up by the administrative center. If you pick a really good location - the districts will actually take less turns to complete. PLUS - infrastructure becomes more efficient as now their bonuses are spread across two territories and their cost DOESN'T scale!!! So, with one territory - focus on districts. With multiple - focus on infrastructure.

It doesn't feel at all to me like you're trying to make a "cash grab" vid when something like this comes out. Your schedule is your own, and your choices on what content to make are your own. Some folks have an attitude that leads them to expect things from you, sometimes unfairly, and frankly I don't like it. Keep doing what you enjoy doing and your audience will find you. That's what I sincerely believe about this type of work. Hope to continue seeing your creativity and passion for gameplay and mechanical design for a long while yet! 💚🥔👍

@@PotatoMcWhiskey Humankind actually is the odd one out from Amplitude Studio games, in that the factions start the same. In their usual Strategy games factions are so different, you will be hard pressed to find a "standard faction". They only add factions post release if they either: - can think of a self-contained unique mechanic, like a special resource - can add a new base game mechanic for the new faction to excell in They had to add Espionage for the Umbral They had to add Behemoth to make the Hiisho a playable faction. The wonders have all been re-balanced - so you might want to check before building off of what you remember. Some are more powerful in general but usually offer less stability - and there are some that are very powerful situationally - like when you don't have a horse deposit anywhere close and can just create one while making all of the associated units cheaper to build.

Humankind is a challenge to play. The RNG and the siege/sea warfare bombardment just makes no sense in terms of LOS, visual representation and Y axis movement/engagement. Humankind should have been a top performer in the 4X genre, and just fell short and continues to struggle. I have nearly 300 hours of played time in Humankind, and it is still a pita on some of the most basic elements. I find it telling that Potato, with his sound tactics and number crunching calls out this game on many aspects, and like many experienced 4X players, we just *boggle* at some of the decisions that went into this game. Also, the fact Potato just got through demoing and making contractual content for Millennia, here he is playing what I suspect, despite it flaws, is still a better 4X game than Millennia. The irony.
@ZenobiaofPalmyra8 ай бұрын
Nah, Millenia is absolutely a better game than Humankind, having played them both. The issue is that the actual gameplay of Millenia is great from moment to moment, but so much of the flavor (civilizations, the maps, limited city grown, and incredibly fast gameplay) makes the entire experience lacking that sort of "empire building" that civ does so well. Humankind gets the flavor right, but the actual moment to moment gameplay is something I find constantly infuriating, not to mention the narrative elements get old rather quick.

Time and time again Amplitude Studios games get heralded as Civ killers during marketing, and time and time again we end up with another Endless Legend or Endless Space and it ends up being 'not quite a civ killer but an interesting take on 4x which is generally speaking, less enjoyable'. -My review and opinion on Humankind in a nutshell.
@robertstegmann92608 ай бұрын
Is there a reason why you went with a fast game speed instead of standard for this? It does change the game a good amount because pop growth is cap at max +1 per turn. The game also plays better with a slower pace imo, and faster speeds really rush the neolithic era, which already goes by too quickly. Also, now with the three neolitihic legacy traits you can get, I think it is worth it to try and get all of them before advancing, unless you really want to grab a specific ancient culture. But the AI grabs them very quick anyway, and turning off exclusive cultures is best if you want a specific build.

I don't want to just be a shill or whatever... but damn so much backlash for this and Millenia and everything lol, like damn. People are so fickle. Lots of content creators have Patreon exclusive content. Not always a full series but usually something. And as far as I know Mr. Potatohead has never been a 100% exclusive full time Civ creator, although I am a relatively newer subscriber I guess. Also people who hate on sponsored content gotta stop. I'd much rather he take a sponsorship on a 4x strategy game which the channel largely features, than have an ad for Raid Shadowbullshit in every video with a heavily faked and scripted praise, or insert other hyper predatory gacha game. If you don't like the sponsored game move on, but all creators gotta take sponsorships in some form and I much prefer when it's about (possibly) relevant content rather than random ad-segments.

I've never really given it a fair chance and a week or so ago i was looking at your patreon and considered subcribing but decided to wait to see what game the next series was about.
